Intermediate Geography Environmental Interactions
Natural Hazards LESSON 1
Success Criteria By the end of this section you can Define what a natural/environmental hazard is Understand the effects of a natural hazards Understand the difference between a natural hazard and a natural disaster Identify different kinds of natural hazards
What is a Natural Hazard? Read page 1 in Hazards Booklet (orange booklet at back of folder) Some hazards are related to weather and climate Others are related to the structure of the earth What could be the effect of these hazards?
Natural Hazard Questions Define the term ‘natural/ environmental hazard’? (1) Make a list of the main environmental hazards? (6) When do natural hazards become disastrous? (1) How could such disasters affect people? List your answer. (4)
How successful have WE been? Can you? Define what a natural/environmental hazard is Understand the effects of a natural hazards Understand the difference between a natural hazard and a natural disaster Identify different kinds of natural hazards
The Earths Structure Aims Recall the structure of the earth from S2 ‘Earth Forces’ Learn about the earth’s plates Learn about how these plates move
Success Criteria By the end of this section you can Recall the structure of the earth from S2 ‘Earth Forces’ Recall that the earth’s plates Understand how these plates can move and what can happen when they do so.
Structure of the earth
The Earths Plates
Giant Jigsaw Puzzle
Continental Drift Movement at these plates is called continental drift Some plates are being pulled apart (diverging) Some are being pushed together (converging) But how are they being moved?? Convection currents
Convection Current Movement
Converging and Diverging
How successful have WE been? Can you? Recall the structure of the earth from S2 ‘Earth Forces’ Recall that the earth’s plates Understand how these plates can move and what can happen when they do so.

Pangea – the Super Continent
Mid Atlantic Ridge Complete class exercise 2
Pacific Ring of Fire
Next time.... We will learn about the inside of a volcano Participate in some active learning
Volcanoes, part 2 Success criteria By the end of this section you will have Learnt about the inside of volcanoes Improved your memory skills Got to know each other a little bit better through teamwork HOMEWORK Class exercise 2, 3 and 4 LESSON 2
Mount St Helen Success criteria By the end of this section you will have Learnt about the eruption of Mount St Helens The cause of the eruption, where the eruption happened, the impact of the eruption. Watched some media about the eruption Tested your knowledge by answering some questions from the Intermediate textbook LESSON 3 H/WORK DUE!
Mount St Helen, cont Success criteria By the end of this section you will have Learnt about the aftermath of the eruption Learnt about the Mt St Helen’s aid operation Answered a series of questions to test your understanding of this LESSON 4
Other Eruptions Success criteria By the end of this section you will have Learnt about the danger of pyroclastic flow Learnt about eruptions which have had devastating pyroclastic flow activities LESSON 5
Hazards Associated with Volcanic Eruptions Take the heading above Make a list of hazards that could be associated with a volcanic eruption Tsunami Fire Mudslides /Lahars Earthquakes Famine Flooding
Earthquakes Success criteria By the end of this section you will be/ have Confident about the cause of earthquakes Confident about the where earthquakes are located An understanding of new key vocabulary associated with earthquakes LESSON 6 Look at page 47 in the yellow booklet
Today’s work Using yellow worksheets Read over information on pages 47 -49 Answer class exercise 9 Read page 52 Textbook Work Read page 160-161 Answer the questions (either on your worksheet or in your jotter)
