This document analyzes and summarizes several camera shots from a music video:
1) A panning shot highlights different colors on each band member to fit the upbeat music.
2) A mid wide shot establishes the rustic warehouse location and shows the serious performers engrossed in the meaningful music.
3) A high contrast mid shot uses lighting to reflect a shadow, suggesting the dark side of the artist's music and personality.
3. In this shot the director is panning the camera around the room of the band. This
shows every angle of them and shows all of the lighting. This is one of my favourite
shots because each time the camera moves we see all of the colours being
highlighted in the room. Each member in the band has a different colour
highlighted on them. For instance the guitarist is blue and the drummer is pink.
This is very significant because the start of music video was very dark and had no
colour., thus is therefore livening up towards the end where the music gets more
upbeat. The colours and the camera is therefore fitting the pace of the music.
This shot is a mid wide shot. It again shows the whole band and establishes the
location. They are performing in what seems to be a warehouse like location
which is very simplistic and has a rustic feel just like the music. This shot is very
simple and is not over the top or complicated. All the performers look very
serious and engrossed in what they are doing which shows how meaningful the
music is to them which is very important for the watchers to see. This is a very
good shot as it is something that I can achieve with the correct locations.
This is another mid shot used. The lighting however is very high contrast which is
almost blinding the artist. This is used to reflect a shadow onto the wall behind
him. This shot again is simple and not over the top meeting the feel of the
music. I feel the high contrast lighting affect to reflect a shadow is very effective
and something I would want to incorporate into my video. This may have been
used by the director to suggest the dark side of James music and personality as a
shadow is just black.
4. This music video starts with a handheld camera tracking the artist sitting in the
chair. The idea he is just sitting there and not moving suggests his despair and his
grief. This may link to the name of the song being “let it go” as he may have lost a
loved one. Moreover as the camera begins outside the room and gains in on him
we start to see the pace of the song build up with the movement of the camera.
This shot is very effective because it is gradually building up and giving the video
tension.
This close up shot shows the solemn mood of James and how he is upset. His
facial expression meets the mood of the song as his face is not upbeat and
happy it is very sad. Thus representing the slow sad and meaningful sound
of the song and the lyrics‘. This is very important as the artist needs to act
accordingly to the type of music and in this video the artist does. These are the
kind of shots that I should do because they are simple and not complex.
This mid shot tracks the artist walking out of a house that was just on fire. This shot
is very eccentric because the explosions keep going off. I really like this shot
however me being able to create a safe fire is very unlikely. This whole video uses
low contrast lighting for a dark feel to the video. This is important because the song
is quite dark and sound therefore the colours should contrast with this.
