2. The Silence Of The Lambs
Silence of the lambs which is a psychological-thriller was
directed by Jonathon Demme and written by Thomas
Harris and Ted Tally was first released on January 30th
1991 in the USA and then started to adapt around the
world. The budget for this film was $19,000,000
estimated and it gained $272,742,922 worldwide at gross
profit. This film gained a lot of fans due to the campaign
that was set up for this film.
I am going to look into the campaign of this film and
analyse the different ways they made this film to be such
a huge success.
3. The Silence Of The Lambs Poster
This tittle “The
Silence Of The
The contrast of light Lambs” could be the
and dark could reason for why the
represent binary picture has a
oppositions where butterfly covering
it shows this person the characters face
may have a good which is probably
side and a bad side enforcing that she is
being silenced from
saying something
The tittle of this
poster is red which
possibly represents The characters face
blood, this could on this poster looks
mean there are a like they have no
lot of scenes that emotions this could
may consist of mean this film is
blood based on a cold
emotionless person
4. The Silence Of The Lambs Magazine
• “EMPIRE” is a really famous magazine that advertises
films that are going to be released in order to gain
the audiences attention.
• I believe this is a really good company to advertise
films on as most people that do read a lot of this
type of magazine tend to watch a lot of movies.
• The fact that “The Silence Of The Lambs” is placed in
the middle is saying that this is the main purpose of
today’s magazine as it is the centre of attraction.
• “The Most Frightening Movie Ever Made?” This was
put on this magazine in order to get people to watch
this film so that they can answer this question
themselves.
• The reason for putting “The Most Frightening Movie
Ever Made” was so that the audience were able to
establish a genre. They see this as the most
frightening film ever tells us that this is going to be
either a horror or thriller type genre.
• All the advertisements around this magazine were
placed on the front page so that it enables it to gain
favour of other interests from people, for example
the “FREE” sign would stand out to most people as it
is in big bold red letters and people generally never
say no to free things.
5. The Silence Of The Lambs Book
• The silence of the lambs book has helped develop the film and engage the audience through words.
• This book has helped the film to be successful as when people get a glimpse of the book, they would want to
watch it as they enjoyed reading the book.
• Back in 1991 reading was a big thing for people and most people enjoyed reading about films rather than
watching it.
• Silence of the lambs first novel was published in 1988, 3 years just before the film was released.
• This book left people with an imagination of what this would look like as a film so most people that read the book
were eager to watching the film due to their imaginations.
6. The Silence Of The Lambs Trailer
• This trailer was established so that the audience were able to get a
preview of what the film will be like
• These trailers are usually played on TV or just after a movie starts in the
cinema’s, I personally think this is one of the best parts of a film campaign
• This trailer shares many codes and conventions for a psychological-thriller
such as
- A newspaper saying a psychiatrist charged for murder
- Thriller type of music like something bad is going to happen
- A man behind bars locked up and has a psychotic look
- Red text could represent the film to have a lot of bloody scenes
- Men dressed in doctor type clothing
- Voice over saying “He keeps them alive for 3 days then he shoots them
skins them and dumps them” shows that he is a psycho
I believe these codes and conventions perfectly sum up what the film will be
about and anchors the audience to watch it.
7. Conclusion
I believe silence of the lambs was a successful film as they
had many viewers and they gained more than they
invested into and from the film. Most of the campaign
was not as much developed as I thought it would be as
there was no website or applications and the quality of
posters and advertisements were not as good as I
thought they’d be, however I realised that this film was
made in 1991 so I gathered that they barely used digital
technology to advertise their films in the industry due to
lack of affordability for a computer or internet and they
didn't have as much as designing technology as we do in
today’s society.
