The document summarizes 9 shots from the opening of a film project. Shot 1 introduces the title and main character Grace. Shot 2 shows Grace's normal home setting. Shot 3 displays Grace's messy bedroom to portray her as a typical teen. Shot 4 uses camera work to focus on Grace walking to college. Shot 5 reveals the title font style. Shot 6 establishes Grace's journey as setting up the story. Shot 7 hints at the thriller genre with a bleak atmosphere. Shot 8 introduces characters like Grace's mother mysteriously. Shot 9 uses lighting and sound effects to create tension in the classroom.
3. Shot 1
The first screen grab on our display is the title. We
decided to go with this title because it is similar to other
thriller names (just one word e.g. Taken, se7en and
collateral) and fits in nicely with the story line/theme
that we wanted to go with (recollection meaning to
remember, our main character grace goes through the
movie trying to remember her past).
4. Shot 2
The second frame we chose was to portray settings in
our opening.
Although through out our opening our main character
'Grace' is seen in 3 different settings (At home, Walking
to college and at college) we chose this screen shot to
portray the calm and normal area in which she lives
(just like any other student). for example, kris fowles in
nightmare on elm street lived in a normal upper class
suburban house in a peaceful and calm area)
5. Shot 3
The third frame helps show the props that we decided
to use for this opening, The props show quite clearly
that grace is a normal teenage girl e.g.
magazines, tester cream, overall messy desk and
teddy. These props help show that grace is like any
other teenage girl (for the opening) You can also see
from the other frames, grace's costume (normal plain
casual clothes) this further reflects grace being normal.
6. Shot 4
The 4th frame shows our use of camera work, in this shot, grace
has almost arrived at college, and for the majority of the shots
before hand, we had medium shots, that focused on grace's upper
torso and head, we also had these shots to take into account the
area in which she was walking and the surroundings.
We then brought this shot (a closer shot focusing on her feet) into
the mix to show more variety in the shots. You can also see good
camera work in shot 7.
In this shot we have good use of symmetry and leading lines
(doors, lights ect.) that help the audience focus on grace (due to
her being in the middle) We also have a slight effect on this shot
due to lighting when filming. The lighting helped give a more sterile
and bleak tone to the shot and helped introduce our thriller
element to our opening.
7. Shot 5
Our 5th shot clearly shows our title font and style.
We decided to go for a girly, artsy handwritten
opening font to reflect grace's character (an arty
teenage girl) and so help introduce our teen drama
element.
However we kept the title scenes blank and so just
had white writing on black to help add a more thriller
tone to our very much teen drama opening.
This helps the audience focus on the writing and
helps break up the overall rushed cheery mood
within the first minute or so in the opening.
This font is similar to the font used on the movie
poster for "sucker punch" and "Pretty Little Liars"
Both of these thrillers main characters and female
and so this font also helps reflect our main character
(due to her being female.)
8. Shot 6
•
Screen Shot 6 shows the story and how the opening
sets it up.
I decided that grace's journey to college best reflects
the opening and helps almost trick the audience into a
rushed/moody teenage tone.
This is very well contrasted with the scene with grace
drawing in the classroom (shot 9) due to it having a
more serious and thriller-ish tone to it
9. Shot 7
Shot 7 helps show our overall intended genre and how our
opening suggests it.
We all decided on aiming for a teen drama/thriller and so helped
introduce both of these elements nicely. In this screen shot, you
can see the obvious intended thriller theme due to the sterile/eerie
feel and the overall bleak colour set.
this is contrasted with the start of with opening with the
upbeat/busy music and grace's colourful but still normal bedroom.
This shot helps show how we introduced our thriller tone to the
opening because after this shot, this theme continues through to
the classroom (see shot 9) and so helps ease in conventions of a
thriller from the up beat teen drama start.
10. Shot 8
Shot 8 How characters are introduced. Grace being the main character was
the first character we decided to introduce and so the audience know to focus
on her.
This is similar to thriller conventions because in most thrillers, there's always a
character that the audience can refer to or empathize with. We first introduced
grace's mum by having her call out to grace to wake up. In this shot, it shows
how we introduced grace's mum physically.
we kept an element of mystery by not including her mum's face, but including
speech. This element of mystery helps reinforce our intended thriller theme
but still keeping the outlook as a teen drama. We slowly introduced other
characters by revealing aspects of them slowly, e.g., first visually and then
with speech (the classmates)
This worked well in the classroom scene as it helped introduce our thriller
theme to our opening. This overall created a sense of mystery in this scene.
The only character we didn't fully achieve this with was the teacher in charge.
However, it still creates a sense of mystery.
11. Shot 9
The mid shot used in shot 9 helped show good use of effects in our
opening.
we didn't want to add a huge amount of effects because we wanted
to keep our opening seem as realistic as possible, and so the
effects we used visually, were only slight.
We added in diegetic sound of classroom chatter in the classroom
scene to give an effect of a full classroom, and we also added in a
Foley sound (which is diegetic) for when grace was drawing, to help
the audience focus on what grace was doing (showing that she is
the main character) Visually, in the classroom the lighting that we
had while filming helped match up the corridor walking shot to the
classroom.
The lighting overall in the classroom created a dull sterile tone and
so helped us further introduce conventions of a thriller into our
opening.
