INTERNET AND ITS FUTURE

16. WHAT IS AN INTERNET?
❖Internet is a global computer network
providing variety of information and
communication facilities consisting of
interconnected networks using standardized
communication protocols.
18. NETWORK
❖ Consists of two or more computers that
are linked in order to share resoures such
as printers...that exchange files, or allow
electronic communications.
❖ Is a network of networks that
consists of millions of networks from
local to global scope linked together

20. BIRTH OF THE NET
❖The Internet has had a relatively
brief, but explosive history. It grew out
of an experiment begun in the 1960’s
by the US Department of Defense
(DoD).
21. BIRTH OF THE NET
❖The DoD wanted to create a
computer network that would
continue to function in the event of
a disaster, such as a nuclear war.
22. BIRTH OF THE NET
❖If part of the network was damaged or
destroyed, the rest of the system still had
to function. That network was called
ARPANET. (Advanced Researched
Projects Agency Network) which linked
U.S. scientific and academic researchers,
the forerunner of today’s Internet.
23. 1957
❖Batch Processing – computer work one
task at a time.
• Ineffective, computers are bigger,
had to be stored in a special cooled
rooms
• Developers couldn’t work directly to
the server.
24. 1957
❖Programming led to a lot of manual works and
led to a lot of bugs and waste of time marked a
big CHANGE.
❖TIME-SHARING idea came up. One computer
connected to multiple users
❖ SPUTNIK 1
• – first satelite during the COLD WAR
25. 1958
❖DARPA ( Defense Advanced
Research Project Agency)
• Planned a large scale of nework in order
for knowledge transfer
❖ARPANET (Advanced Research
Project Agency Network)
• Military network ( 3 concepts:
RAND Corp, NPL, CYCLADES)

34. HOW INTERNET WORKS
❖Data Center (SERVER)
=➔ websites, files, videos… are stored
How does data reach your phone or computers?
➔ Through Optical Fiber network
35. HOW INTERNET WORKS
❖IP address (its like Home address)
=➔ unique numbers assigned for websites
since its difficult to memorize numbers
Where are these IP addresses saved?
? ➔ DNS (works like a phonebook)
36. HOW INTERNET WORKS
❖How do data flow or travel from your computer?
=Browser (Domain name)➔Server (Data center)➔Data
flows via optical fibers (light pulses)➔ Router(home) from light
to electric signals through ethernet cable.
❖How do data flow or travel from your mobile phones?
➔ Optical cable (signal)➔cell tower(electro magnetic
waves)
37. HOW INTERNET WORKS
❖WHO manages all the IP addresses?
=ICANN (Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Number)
