all the whiteness and can’t get a grip on anything.
Get a grip on 사로잡다, 장악하다
If you get a grip on yourself, you make an effort to
control or improve your behavior or work.
온 세상이 하얀 것을 바라보며 아무것도 집중을 할 수가
없다고 했다.
4. Chapter 3 - p36
If I were able to go out with my camera in the cold,
the film wouldn’t be able to grip the edges and
corners of things because everything has blended so
into the colorless, stark mass of February.
Blend into 섞이다
Stark 삭막한, 황량한
Mass 덩어리
이 추운 날 카메라를 들고 나간다면, 사진은 사물의 가
장자리와 모서리를 잡아내지 못할 것이다. 왜냐하면 모
든 것이 무색이고 삭막한 2월로 뭉퉁거려지기 때문이다.

Dad said, leaning back in his scruffy leather chair in
front of the typewriter.
Scruffy (구어) 단정치 못한, 지저분한 (dirty, untidy)
6. Chapter 3 – p42
His face fell.
One’s face fall 실망하다
If your face fall, you suddenly look disappointed or
upset.
I come to a problem that seems insurmountable.
Insurmountable 대처할 수 없는, 이겨내기 어려운
A problem that is insurmountable is so great that it
cannot be dealt with successfully.
7. Chapter 3 – p43
Molly and I cringed when we looked at it too closely.
Cringe 움츠리다, 움찔하다
If you cringe at something, you feel embarrassed or
disgusted and making a slight movement.
Some memories are better off forgotten, especially
when you haven’t lived far enough beyond them yet.
There was the blue plaid that Molly wore her first day
in junior high, ~.
8. Chapter 3 – p46
It’s also a nuisance, Molly being sick.

She’s grouchy.
Grouchy 불평이 많은, 잘 투덜거리는
She can’t be feeling to bad, because she spends a lot
of time in front of the mirror in our room, trying to fix
her hair which has gotten kind of scroungy looking,
and putting rouge on her face, because it’s so pale.
Scroungy 지저분한, 더러운
Something that is scroungy is dirty or shabby.

The doctor from the village says it’s because of the
cold weather, which damages the nasal membranes.

She groaned good-naturedly.
Groan 신음하다, 끙끙거리다
Good-natured 온화한, 부드러운
Good-naturedly 친절하게
A good-natured person or animal is naturally friendly
and does not get angry easily.
11. Chapter 3 – p49
From behind her Kleenex she said haughtily.
Haughtily 오만하게
Haughty 오만한, 거만한
Even Molly realized how silly she looked and sounded,
talking from behind a wad of tissues.
wad 뭉치, 다발, 많음
A wad of something such as paper or cloth is a tight
bundle or ball of it.
