Presentation slides from my September 2023 guest lecture on Generative AI and its impact on creativity. The lecture also highlights the key themes of my recent July/August 2023 Harvard Business Review (HBR) cover article, exploring the potential of Generative AI to enhance human creativity. Additionally, the presentation engages in a discussion regarding the emerging opportunities and challenges within this domain.
Generative AI (GAI) refers to a type of artificial intelligence that is able to generate new data or content, such as text, images, or music. This is typically done by training a model on a large dataset of existing data, and then using the model to generate new, similar data.

4. GENERATIVE AI ERA
A friendly introduction to the new and
disruptive age of Gen-AI.
5. WHAT IS AI? Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human
intelligence processes by machines, especially computer
systems. These processes include learning (the acquisition of
information and rules for using the information), reasoning
(using the rules to reach approximate or definite conclusions),
and self-correction.

6. BRIEF HISTORY OF AI
1940s-1950s
The early years of
AI. Programs such
as the Logic
Theorist and the
General Problem
Solver.
1956-1974
The “Golden Age”
of AI. Development
of expert systems
and natural
language
processing.
1974-1980
The “AI Winter”
period when
funding for research
dried out. There
was increased
skepticism of the
ability of AI to
mimic humans.
1980s-1990s
The resurgence of
AI with important
developments in
practical systems
such as expert
systems for medical
diagnosis and voice
recognition
systems.
1990s-2020
The machine
learning era. The
proliferation of data
has led to a
renewed interest in
AI, focusing on
machine learning
and deep learning.

7. GENERATIVE AI
Generative AI (GAI) refers to a type of artificial intelligence that
is able to generate new data or content, such as text, images, or
music. This is typically done by training a model on a large dataset
of existing data, and then using the model to generate new, similar
data. Generative AI models can be used for a wide range of
applications, such as image and video synthesis, text generation,
and music composition.

10. CHATGPT ChatGPT is a large-scale language model developed by OpenAI. It is
based on the transformer architecture and is trained on a dataset of
conversational text. It is capable of understanding context and
generating human-like responses to text input.

11. CLAUDE Claude 2 from artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, can parse and
summarize large texts of up to 75,000 words. Anthropic calls Claude 2
“constitutional AI”. The generative AI tool draws on other
documents, such as the privacy clauses in Apple’s terms of service, in
order to produce ethical responses to queries.

12. DALL-E DALL-E is a deep learning model developed by OpenAI that is
capable of generating images from text descriptions. It uses a
transformer architecture similar to the one used in GPT and is trained
on a dataset of images and their associated captions.

HUMAN CREATIVITY
• Promote Divergent Thinking
• Challenge Expertise Bias
• Assist in Idea Evaluation
• Support Idea Refinement
• Facilitate Collaboration
18
T. T. EAPEN
19. PROMOTE DIVERGENT
THINKING
• Challenge: Ideators find it hard to connect
multiple remote concepts.
• Solution: Use Generative AI as a tool for
remote associations can overcome curse-
of-expertise and help identify novel ideas
