Student-centered assessments involve students examining their own learning and focusing on learning over grades. They can be individual, team-based, or a combination. Three challenges are orienting students to new assessment methods, ensuring peers also use innovative approaches, and addressing concerns that it reduces course content coverage. Student-centered approaches move away from passive lecture-based learning by engaging students in active and interactive learning to develop lifelong skills. Approaches including physical movement are effective by stimulating brain areas to improve attention, reading, and learning through kinesthetic activities like spinning, crawling, and rolling.

How can you implement assessment so that it enhances student-centered
learning? The assessment technique involves students in examining their own
cognitive development by having them focus on learning first and the grade
second.
Student-centered assessments are individual, team-based, and a combination of
the two. There are three challenges for student-centered assessments
The first challenge is that the teacher orients students to the learning and
assessment methodologies. In that case, they understand the reason student-
centered approaches are being used with intended benefits.
Another challenge is related to whether or not one’s peers are engaging in
innovative assessment approaches as well.
The last challenge is to address mainly the concerns of those who contend that
taking class time to develop student-centered assessment somehow detracts
from the content of the course.
What student-centered approaches or techniques can you use to address
differentiation?
The student-centered approach allows to move away from one-way lecture-
based learning where the teachers disseminate information while students
passively listen, answer questions, read and write.
To learn something, the student needs to leave the lower order thinking
(remembering and understanding) from outside of the class. Once you are able
to do that, you can created all sort of student-centered approaches and
techniques that will allow students engage in more active and interactive learning
that has the potential to develop life-long learning skills. The flipped classroom is
a pedagogical solution with a technological component. It is a very large
technological component. A flipped classroom requires the teacher to know how
to use some technological sources.
What student-centered approaches or techniques include physical
movement as a central element?
Student-centered approaches including a component of physical movement are
an effective strategy engaging students in learning. Kinesthetic learning is very
important to learn new concepts. A scientific research shows that learning
through motions is very important. There is a link between movement and
learning. For instance, oxygen is necessary for brain to function. More blood flow
equals more oxygen. Based on Jensen’s article, physical activity increases
blood flow (2005). Other outcomes that increase physical movement including
2. more cortical mass, greater number of connections among neurons, and gene
expression to improve learning and memory (Jenssen, 2005). Stimulating the
vestibular (inner ear) and cerebellar system through movement activities such as
spinning, crawling, and rolling can result in “significant gains in attention and
reading”(Jensen, 2005).
