Stroke is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. A mathematical model was extended to simulate the effects of hypothermia on cell survival during ischemic stroke. Simulations showed that inducing hypothermia to 34.5 °C within 1-1.5 hours of stroke onset could extend cell survival time by at least 5 hours in tissue with perfusion reduced by 80% of normal.
