2. Methods of Manufacturing
There are three main Methods of Manufacturing
One off
Batch Production
Mass Production
There are a number of issues with each method that

3. One Off Production
One off production – sometimes known as Bespoke
Requires a high level of skill and specialism.
High degree of flexibility in products and manufacturing.
Produces a unique one of a kind product.
Time consuming and expensive.
Advantages –
Unique high quality product specific to the individual
consumer and matching their needs exactly.
Disadvantages –
Expensive in manpower and materials.
Limited Market Appeal.

5. Batch Production
Batch Production –
Usually a small to medium scale workshop environment
producing a limited range of products that are similar e.g.
similar materials or similar design.
Skilled and semi skilled crafts persons required.
Some degree of flexibility in the products and
manufacturing approach.
Advantages –
Flexible production can adapt more easily to changes in
market, trends, consumer needs.
Repeatable nature of products leads to quality and accuracy
but provides possibility for some individualism for the
consumer.

7. Mass Production
Mass Production –
Large scale factory operation.
producing a very limited range of products or just 1.
Mostly unskilled labour.
No flexibility.
Advantages –
Repeatable nature of products leads to quality and accuracy
Low cost to the consumer.
Disadvantages -
Environmental, Economic & Ethical Impact to local area.
Bulk buying power means lower prices to suppliers.
Low wages to unskilled workers.
Poorer working conditions.
Need for engineered obsolescence
(product must be need replacing at some point)
