  3. 3. Introduction <ul><li>We are going to be looking at how smart phones and social networks affect society like peoples behavior. Smart phones have disadvantages, it breaks up families, friendships, relationships and marriages. It decreases the productivity of employees and cost the employers lots of money. People text an drive causing accidents and the smart phones disrupt the classrooms and students. The internet makes it easy for teenagers to be preys for predators </li></ul>
  4. 4. The behavioral effects of social networks on families <ul><li>Social networking has replaced the intimate interactions and bonds between family’s. Cyber technology is hindering the ability of people to develop social skills, and nurture interpersonal relationships. Family conversations have been replaced by texting </li></ul><ul><li>Social network addiction </li></ul><ul><li>People become addicted to the social networks(facebook, twitter) and begin to ignore family and work obligations because they find the facebook world a more enjoyable place to spend than the real world. Many people lose their jobs because of this and therefore they fall into depression. Avoiding the real world can turn into a problem because people neglect their relationships, responsibilities and health. Social networking is an emotional addiction </li></ul><ul><li>Four signs that show if you are a social networking addict </li></ul><ul><li>Giving up sleep for more social networking time </li></ul><ul><li>Spending more than one hour a day social networking </li></ul><ul><li>Spending to much time at work on social networking </li></ul><ul><li>Feeling a lot of anxiety about going one day without checking </li></ul><ul><li>a social networking site </li></ul>

Dangers of texting and driving <ul><li>Texting while driving </li></ul><ul><li>The chances of getting into a serious car crash increases six times if you are texting while driving in comparison with driving while drunk. In 2009 an experiment by one of the leading automotive magazine in the United States revealed that texting while driving is more of a threat than driving while drunk </li></ul><ul><li>Dangers of texting while driving statistics </li></ul><ul><li>Using a cell phone while driving reduces your brain activity by 37%. Around 50% of all drivers between the age of 18-24 are involved in texting while driving and 20% of adults are doing the same thing. Almost half of the subjects between the age group of 12-17 admitted that they travelled in cars and buses with the driver texting. Almost 80% of accidents in the roads are due to texting while driving. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Disruptiveness of smart phones in schools <ul><li>Smart phones have disrupted the classroom. They ring during class thus distracting the teacher and the students that were focusing on the lesson. Students do not do their home works because they spend most of their time in social networks and the internet. They neglect their school work and do not focus in class because they are busy with chat rooms and that results in them failing their grades . According to recent survey 41% of children have been threatened via their smart phones. </li></ul><ul><li>Disadvantages of cell phones at school </li></ul><ul><li>Smart phones are being used by students to cheat in tests by sending messages with the test answers. </li></ul><ul><li>Spreading lies and rumors about students and teachers and that sometimes may result in teachers losing their jobs </li></ul><ul><li>Many students end up commiting suicide because of their private pictures being posted in social network </li></ul><ul><li>Students cyber bullying each other thus resulting in some students refusing to go to school in fear that they might get beaten up. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Productivity of work place <ul><li>Social media and social networking sites create distractions in the work place and cost employers money. According to a 2008 report ,employees spent an average of 40 minutes per week on social networking sites while at work. Forty minutes might not sound like a long time, over a one year period it costs employers $2.25 billion </li></ul><ul><li>Employee productive loss was the most widespread in businesses with over 38% due to social networking. When employees transfer files from their mobile phones into the computer, viruses may be transferred into the computer causing the system to crash or sensitive files to be lost </li></ul>
  8. 8. Pedophiles on the internet <ul><li>With the rise of social networking sites comes the rise of sexual predators. The is crime in the sites and pedophile groups that try to come into contact with other members. </li></ul><ul><li>Pedophiles use the internet to exploit children. Children put too much information on the social networking sites which makes them an easy prey for any pedophile looking for an easy target </li></ul><ul><li>Facebook had a group known as NAMBLA which contained child exploitation blogs, chat rooms devoted to children. These crimes increase as social networking increases </li></ul>
  9. 9. Conclusion <ul><li>Smart phones have bad influence on people. It changes their behavior, breaks up families and relationships. People become anti-social and it allows people to be easily scammed and teenagers to be easy preys for predators. So basically smart phones have their disadvantages and the internet is not always good </li></ul>
