Overview
The final project for this course is the creation of a leadership communication analysis and leadership communication plan.
Can we learn from the past to prepare for the future? It is a common refrain in the business world. However, nowhere are the lessons of the past more helpful
than in the field of corporate communications. All of us have seen, at one time or another, a company failing to get out the proper message. Whether it is about a
product recall or an unforeseen corporate crisis, companies can be slow to react and their reactions are not always the most appropriate for the situation at
hand.
Being an effective leader is more than just making an impressive speech. The most important aspect of communication is not speaking, but listening. To be an
effective speaker, you have to know that your message is being received and is being received in the manner that is expected. This paradox is what leads to most
communications problems in the corporate world. In this course, you will explore examples of leadership communications and learn not only how they do or do
not effectively reach their audiences, but the impact leadership communications can have on an organization. This experience will expose you to appropriate
ways of communicating as a leader and proper strategies and approaches to leadership.
For the summative assessment in this course, you will review an example of a leadership communication, discern how the plan could be improved in reaching
internal and external audiences, and determine its impact on the organization responsible for the communication. Then you will develop a leadership
communication plan designed to inform future leadership communications of the organization. This summative assessment will prepare you to create future
leadership communications and take advantage of future leadership opportunities.
The project is divided into three milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final
submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Two, Four, and Six. The final product will be submitted in Module Nine.

For this project you will conduct research on and analyze a specific C Suite leader and a
major business decision that was made by that leader. To begin you need to select
your topic with the following steps:
1. Select a C Suite leader to profile. Pick someone who is visible in the public eye.
The CEO of a public American company can be a good choice. Part of your
research will be to read press and news reports on this person so it is a good
idea to check on their public visibility before finalizing your
selection. CNBC.com, YouTube, Fortune.com and WSJ.com are all good
sources for interviews and videos on business leaders.
2. Identify a major strategic marketing decision the company made while that
person was in their C- Suite role. Common strategic marketing decisions are
launching a new product, acquiring a business/entering a new market,
rebranding a product, launching a major marketing campaign. Example: Elon
Musk CEO of Tesla oversees the decision to launch a self driving car.
For the project you will conduct research on the executive, the company and the
business decision and use your findings to write a report in which you:
1. Describe the leadership background and leadership style of the executive (what
is their leadership experience, what style of leadership do they demonstrate,
what are previous successes/failures)
2. Analyze the strategic business situation relevant to this decision: What forces
were driving the company to take this action? What problems do you think they
were trying to solve with this decision? Use data as much as possible.
3. Take the role of a member of the Board of Directors for the company and
identify three risks that the company should address in making a commitment to
this course of action (e.g. risk that culture of acquisition will not fit into company,
risk that leader is repeating a decision from the past that did not turn out well,
etc).

Walexron is a publicly traded, US multinational corporation headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas, operating in all 50 states, Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa. In 2009, Walexron was created by the consolidation of a large discount retailer, express carrier, and energy company with the intent to become one of the most powerful and efficient companies in the world.
Manuel Perez was hired by Walexron as a full-time employee in one of the retail store in Brownsville, Texas, in 2009 and was terminated in 2012. Perez filed a lawsuit based on wrongful termination in which he asserted the company terminated him after he complained about various employment practices that violated state and federal laws. Walexron filed a petition to compel arbitration as required by the employee handbook. Walexron claimed the arbitration policy was displayed on page 51 in the employee handbook that Perez agreed to abide by as evidenced by his signature acknowledging receipt of the handbook. The clause provides, in part, that arbitration will be the exclusive forum for resolving all disputes between Employer and Perez “arising out of claims for wrongful termination, discrimination, retaliation or harassment in violation of state or federal law, alleged violation of state or federal family and medical leave laws and other laws pertaining to employment, and for unpaid wages under state or federal law.” Another provision of the Handbook provides that it “is not intended to create a contract of employment and does not in any way alter the at-will employment relationship between [Employer] and its Employees.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. R Discussion 2: Organizational Knowledge To be useful, organizational “knowledge” has to be captured and used. Here are some ways of capturing it and using it effectively: (a) keep it human; (b) focus on useful knowledge and “know-how”; (c) collect artifacts; (d) avoid an insular, isolated focus; and (e) keep your knowledge fresh.
