How does your product use or
challenge conventions and how
does it represent social groups or
issues.
Question 1
102
• My groups opening sequence is a
‘hospital’ thriller
• To create this atmosphere we
used:
• Mise en scene
• Editing
• Sound
• And shot types
• All of these were inspired by other
hospital thrillers
Representation in my thriller
• My opening sequence represents members of society
through:
• Age
• Gender
• Multiculture
How age is represented
• There is a clear age difference
between the four characters in my
thriller
• The two girls trapped in the cage are
young and the surgeons look to be in
their 20’s
• The surgeons are male and are shown
to be in a position of power over the
girls
• This is effective as it denotes how
older people are more powerful and
dominant over younger people
Older men
One of the young girls (looks around
14)
How gender is represented
• Both the ‘patients’ are girls and are seen as weak in my
thriller
• The surgeons are shown as more powerful as the girls
• This is because the men are on the other side of the cage
where they are free
• The women however, are ‘trapped’. This indicates that
men have power over women
How diversity is represented
• There is a language difference in my thriller that acts like a
barrier between the surgeons and the patients.
• The surgeons are seen as the villains in my thriller as a
majority of the audience can’t understand the Russian the
surgeons are speaking
• The language barrier between the cast is effective as it is
also linked to the very physical cage barrier between the
girls and surgeons
Stereotypes in
Stranger Things and 102
• These two shots highlight the inspiration
my group took from Stranger Things
• Both girls appear to be behind bars.
This signifies that they are trapped
• On the other side of cage in both
extracts are men. This suggests that
men are able to intimidate women
Stereotypes
• The stereotypes in my thriller are similar to the stereotypes
created in Stranger things (a TV show)
• In Stranger Things the young girl is being dominated by
the older man
• In 102 the young girls are being held captive by men
• Both thrillers present the idea that girls are incapable of
standing up for themselves and can be easily manipulated
Editing in 102 and Stranger
Things
• Stranger Things and 102 are similar in many ways but when it comes to
editing they are very different
• The editing in Stranger Things is quick paced. This is because the set is
large therefore, there is more to film
• The editing in 102 is slow paced. This is because the location for my
opening sequence was small therefore, not much footage was needed to
be shot to establish the location
• We chose to have long lasting shots to emphasise that the female
protagonist had just woken up
• The shots were from her perspective therefore, the duration of the shots
needed to be slow
Misé-en-scene in 102
• The lighting: We used blue lighting to
help signify that the cage is cold and
lonely
• The costumes: The surgeons wore
scrubs and the patients wore hospital
gowns
• Then location: Our opening sequence
is set in a hallway. The Surgeons
stand in the hallway whilst looking
through a cage that the young girls are
trapped
Misé-en-scene in The 100
• In The 100 the lighting is blue with green
undertones. This helps signify to the
audience that the location is like a
hospital
• The costumes for the doctors are clearly
quite relaxed as they are seen wearing
causal clothes with a lab coat on top
• The location is a large room with six
skylights on the ceiling. We know that
there are windows as there is light cast
onto the floor creating the shadow of a
window
Comparison of the Misé-en-
scene in The 100 and in 102
• My group used The 100 as inspiration for the Misé-en-scene in our thriller
• The costumes are similar as both the doctors and patients were ‘uniforms’ to distinguish themselves
• The lighting in comparison is very similar. This is because cold colours like blue and green are
linked to hospitals. Therefore, having these colours help the audience identify that the girls are
going to be operated on
• The location of these two shots are identical. Both girls are in a cage and are clawing their way out
Shot types we used in 102
• We used plenty of close ups as
in order for our audience to
sympathise with the female
protagonist they must see how
scared she is
• The girls are always shot from
a high angle and the doctors
are shot from a low angle
• Not only does this show the
characters from each others
perspective, it also suggests
that then men are dominate
over the girls
Shot types in 102’s title
sequence
• The title sequence of
102 is full of extreme
close ups
• The close ups are of
bloody medical tools
• This foreshadows what
will happen to the girls
later in the movie
How Dexters title sequence
is similar to 102
• Dexter’s title sequence is
also full of close ups
• The close ups in both 102
and Dexter are effective in
making the audience
uncomfortable
• From this the audience
know to expect gruesome
footage
Sound in 102 compared to sound
in The Girl With All The Gifts
• The music in our thriller was created by
synthesised strings and has no lyrics
• This is the same as the soundtrack in The Girl
With All The Gifts (Cristobal Tapia De Veer-
gifted)
• The music in both The Girl With Al The Gifts and
102 helps to create an eerie atmosphere and
builds up tension for the rest of the film
