The question of who bears the burden of proof frequently comes up in debates between theists and
atheists. In some cases, the theists claim that the atheists bear the burden of proof as it is a self
evident fact that God exists. Whereas some atheists would claim that the theists bear the burden of
proof since they are making supernatural claims. In the following essay I will be discussing both
opinions on this matter, and perhaps show how the burden of proof lies on both of them and neither
of them.
I will begin this discussion by defining the recurring terms during the discussion on the existence of
God. Traditionally the three attitudes one could hold towards the existence of God are theism,
atheism and agnosticism. The belief in the existence of God or Gods, in specific of one that
intervenes in the matters of the universe is defined as theism (Oxford Dictionaries, English, 2016).
Atheism as defined in the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy (Spring 2013 Edition) refers to
the negation of theism or in other words, the denial of the existence of God. Agnosticism is
referred to one the maintains that the nothing is known of the belief of God or cannot be known
(Oxford Dictionaries, English, 2016). A 'burden of proof' is seen as an obligation on a party in a
dispute to provide sufficient warrant for their position (En.wikipedia.org, 2016).

However, after learning more about other religious traditions, this same person may adopt a much
more critical attitude towards their own religion and even religion generally, eventually coming to

Another possible reason for atheism may originate in bad experiences with a religion. A person
might grow up with or convert to a religious faith which they eventually find to be oppressive,
hypocritical, evil, or otherwise unworthy of following. The consequence of this for many is to
become critical of that religion, but in some cases, a person may become critical of all religions
and, as with the previous explanation, even critical of belief in the existence of gods.
Many atheists find their way to disbelief through science. Over the centuries science has come to
offer explanations of aspects of our word which were once the exclusive domain of religion.
Because scientific explanations have been more productive than religious or theistic explanations,
the ability of religion to demand allegiance has weakened. As a result, some people have come to

created; one being Atheism. Atheism is the unbelief of God or any other supreme being. Atheism is
becoming more present within the community which sometimes leads to criticism. Since Christianity
is the is the polar opposite of Atheism, their beliefs, practices, and symbols (or lack of) are bound to

Canada's diversity in religion is constantly increasing, Atheism as a part of it. Though statistics
show that the number of Atheists in Canada has been fluctuating, it is currently the most it has
ever been. Before 1971, there were only 202,025 Atheists in Canada. Now the number has grown
to 7,850,605. Looking at the statistics, there was a great increase in Atheism in Canada from 2001

Let's start off by explaining what atheism is, it's when you don't believe in any form of an

Another inevitable and unanswerable debate is the infamous, "What happens when you die?" This
is one of the most common and, in my personal opinion, foolish arguments you can have against

The person I chose to interact with for this project was a high school student the same age as I,
and a professed atheist. He had been taught from a young age that there is no God and had those

Granted Christianity and Judaism provide a supernatural answer to the question of creation, but the

When we think of religion, we find that it's faith based. The analytical way of thinking is based on

Atheism And Christianity
I believe Atheism and Christianity both can agree on creation of universe but they disagree who is
the creator and what created the creator, how did it happen in the beginning of the world? Christian
believes in Jesus Christ by faith. In book of Genesis it says, "In the beginning God created the
heaven and earth" This phrase shows that everything was created out of scratch and there was
nothing at all before creation, in another words, God originated everything supernaturally. God
