An explication is a complete and detailed analysis of a work of literature, often proceeding word-by-word or line-by-line through the work. For this paper, you will be writing an explication of a poem.
This assignment asks you to analyze and interpret a short poem of your choice from the textbook. To succeed, you should demonstrate that you understand the terms in our textbook and can apply them. By “terms,” I mean words such as “irony,” “allusion,” “connotation,” “metaphor,” and “apostrophe.” (Not every poem calls for the same terms.) You can use the TPFASST worksheet to help you with this.
More important than terminology, though, is your understanding of the poem and your ability to express it coherently.
In your essay you should be writing for a general audience. Think of your goal for this assignment as two-fold: to explain a poem to your reader and to offer your own particular insights. You are welcome to elaborate your own reactions to the poem, but keep in mind that personal opinions do not replace interpretation.
Technical Requirements for Explication:
· The paper must be typed and double-spaced using Times New Roman 12 point font and 1 inch margins.
· The final draft of the paper must be about three - five (3-5) pages.
· This is not a research essay; therefore, you will not be required to use outside sources. But, some basic research may be required for you to give some background information about the poem or the poet. MLA documentation and citation required. You can develop this later into your research paper, though, with more sources.

Robert Frost- Author of the Road Not Taken
Robert Frost (1874–1963) was born in California. After his father’s death in 1885, Frost’s mother took the family to New England, where she taught in high schools in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Frost studied for part of one term at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, then did various jobs (including teaching), and from 1897 to 1899 was enrolled as a special student at Harvard. He later farmed in New Hampshire, published a few poems in local newspapers, left the farm and taught again, and in 1912 left for England, where he hoped to achieve more popular success as a writer. By 1915, he had won a considerable reputation, and he returned to the United States, settling on a farm in New Hampshire and cultivating the image of the country-wise farmer-poet. In fact, he was well read in the classics, in the Bible, and in English and American literature. Among Frost’s many comments about literature, here are three: “Writing is unboring to the extent that it is dramatic”; “Every poem is... a figure of the will braving alien entanglements”; and, finally, a poem “begins in delight and ends in wisdom.... The Assignment:
Write a four-page explication of two short poems from our assigned texts in Week 5 (research optional). Choose two poems that you think will work well together, but offer contrast on some levels (either in form or in content). Poems covered deeply in class discussion are not eligible for this assignment. Pick poems we did not cover in depth.
About Explication:
Explication is the unraveling of a poem (or story or play), analyzing the poem word-by-word, line-by-line, or stanza-by-stanza. In unfolding the poem, address any literary devices you see: simile and metaphor, allusion, rhyme, rhythm, repetition, onomatopoeia, form, and other techniques (see Poetry.org). How do these all contribute to the overall message of the poem?
An explication is a way for you to slow down and focus on the detail. Often, a poem that you find confusing will make sense once you take some time to examine it piece by piece.
Cite all sources according to MLA and include a Works Cited page.
Introduction: Include title (in quotation marks), author, dates, brief background of the author if necessary and relevant, a brief summary of the plot (situation), or literal level of the poem, and your thesis, which is an interpretation (argument) of the meaning you see.
Body Paragraphs: Systematically go through the poem showing the techniques stated in your thesis and showing how they relate to the poet’s argument. Brief quotes should be incorporated into your sentences to clarify your point. Do not, under any circumstance, quote the entire poem within the paper. If you quote three or fewer lines, an inline quote, you should introduce the quote with a signal phrase, and then quote the section of the poem, indicating line breaks with a “/” and stanza breaks with a “//”.
Author writes, “quoted line/quoted next line” (871).
To quote more than three lines, use a block quote. In either case, follow the quote with a parenthetical reference of the line number(s). And then, make sure that you follow the quote with a close analysis/unpacking of the meaning. If you quote there must be a reason, and it is your job to “unpack” what is inside the quote—don’t expect readers to see your points only based on the quote.
Conclusion: Here you pull the paper together and reaffirm your thesis. You could discuss how the poem relates to real life and/or use this paragraph to disagree with the poet’s argument if you wish. Avoid, “I think…” or “I feel…” language. Be specific with word choice and avoid vague words like unique, interesting, amazing, etc.
Style: Keep your sentences focused on the poem itself. Include transitions where appropriate to avoid jumping quickly from one topic to the next.

William Butler Yeats once said that when you have an argument with the world you write an essay, but when you have an argument with yourself you write a poem. Poetry’s advantage is that it can explore these complex arguments not only through its content (subject, characters, themes), but also largely through form (structure, layout, patterns of rhyme and meter, patterns of diction or imagery, repetition, etc.).
TASK:Select two complete poems from our anthology (i.e. not the ones that are just fragments), a pair that you think
does something interesting together. Write an essay that, by comparing and contrasting the poem’s form and content, forms an argument to suggest something significant the authors do with their subject. Put emphasis not merely on WHAT the poem is saying but HOW and WHY. (If you wish, one of the poems can come from outside the anthology).
PURPOSE: To practice extensive brainstorming, sustained close-reading and analysis, and argument-based essay writing.
CRITERIA: Papers will be graded on the sharpness of the observations, wisdom of the organization, precision of the
writing/grammar/punctuation, the level of interest generated by the comparisons and contrasts, and the degree to which the observations have been crafted into a unified argument.
Basic Writing Reminders:
-For this assignment, outside research is not only discouraged – it is forbidden. Work only with what you can get from the poem itself.
-Resist organizing your paper through a chronological treatment of each poem (papers that do this fall into the trap of merely retelling/summarizing the poem, whereas your true goal here is analysis). The strongest papers organize paragraphs around topic sentences that make a broad claim followed by specific details and evidence. Provide a concluding paragraph that recaps your point and brings out the larger significance involved in what you’ve demonstrated. End with a Works Cited listing the poems.

Write a four-page explication of two short poems from our assigned texts in Week 5 (research optional). Choose two poems that you think will work well together, but offer contrast on some levels (either in form or in content). Poems covered deeply in class discussion are not eligible for this assignment. Pick poems we did not cover in depth.
About Explication:
Explication is the unraveling of a poem (or story or play), analyzing the poem word-by-word, line-by-line, or stanza-by-stanza. In unfolding the poem, address any literary devices you see: simile and metaphor, allusion, rhyme, rhythm, repetition, onomatopoeia, form, and other techniques (see Poetry.org). How do these all contribute to the overall message of the poem?
An explication is a way for you to slow down and focus on the detail. Often, a poem that you find confusing will make sense once you take some time to examine it piece by piece.
Cite all sources according to MLA and include a Works Cited page.
Introduction: Include title (in quotation marks), author, dates, brief background of the author if necessary and relevant, a brief summary of the plot (situation), or literal level of the poem, and your thesis, which is an interpretation (argument) of the meaning you see.
Body Paragraphs: Systematically go through the poem showing the techniques stated in your thesis and showing how they relate to the poet’s argument. Brief quotes should be incorporated into your sentences to clarify your point. Do not, under any circumstance, quote the entire poem within the paper. If you quote three or fewer lines, an inline quote, you should introduce the quote with a signal phrase, and then quote the section of the poem, indicating line breaks with a “/” and stanza breaks with a “//”.
Author writes, “quoted line/quoted next line” (871).
To quote more than three lines, use a block quote. In either case, follow the quote with a parenthetical reference of the line number(s). And then, make sure that you follow the quote with a close analysis/unpacking of the meaning. If you quote there must be a reason, and it is your job to “unpack” what is inside the quote—don’t expect readers to see your points only based on the quote.
Conclusion: Here you pull the paper together and reaffirm your thesis. You could discuss how the poem relates to real life and/or use this paragraph to disagree with the poet’s argument if you wish. Avoid, “I think…” or “I feel…” language. Be specific with word choice and avoid vague words like unique, interesting, amazing, etc.
Style: Keep your sentences focused on the poem itself. Include transitions where appropriate to avoid jumping quickly from one topic to the next.

Explication
is a complete and detailed analysis of a work of literature, often proceeding word-by-word or line-by-line through the work. For this paper, you will be writing an explication of a poem. You may choose any of the poems listed in this module.
Technical Requirements for Explication:
The paper must be typed and double-spaced, conforming to proper manuscript
MLA
format. Please review the MLA documentation module for more information on MLA format.
The final draft of the paper must be at least two (2) pages.
This is not a research essay; therefore, you will not (and should not) use outside sources.
In the Explication you will be presenting your "reading" of the poem you have chosen. Such a reading will require you to understand all aspects of the poem and to have a grasp of the meaning of individual parts of the poem in relation to the entire work.
You are not, however, striving to be exhaustive in your "explanation" of the poem, but rather
you should strive to be selective in considering only those details that are significant to your own thematic understanding of the poem

What is the theme/meaning of the poem? Is the theme of the poem presented directly or indirectly? What details make possible the formulation of the main idea?
Do any allusions enrich the poem's meaning? What references need explaining? How does an explanation assist in the understanding of the poem?
What difficult, special, or unusual words does the poem contain? How does the diction reveal meaning? Are any words repeated? If so, do any words carry evocative connotative meanings? Are there any puns or other forms of verbal wit?
Do any objects, persons, places, events, or actions have allegorical or symbolic meanings? What other details in the poem support your interpretation?
Is irony used? Are there any examples of situational irony, verbal irony, or dramatic irony? Is understatement or paradox used?
What is the tone of the poem? Is the tone consistent?
Does the poem use onomatopoeia, assonance, consonance, or alliteration? How do these sounds affect you?
What sounds are repeated? If there are rhymes, what is their effect? Do they seem forced or na.

William Butler Yeats once said that when you have an argument with the world you write an essay, but when you have an argument with yourself you write a poem. Poetry’s advantage is that it can explore these complex arguments not only through its content (subject, characters, themes), but also largely through form (structure, layout, patterns of rhyme and meter, patterns of diction or imagery, repetition, etc.).
TASK:Select two complete poems from our anthology (i.e. not the ones that are just fragments), a pair that you think
does something interesting together. Write an essay that, by comparing and contrasting the poem’s form and content, forms an argument to suggest something significant the authors do with their subject. Put emphasis not merely on WHAT the poem is saying but HOW and WHY. (If you wish, one of the poems can come from outside the anthology).
PURPOSE: To practice extensive brainstorming, sustained close-reading and analysis, and argument-based essay writing.
CRITERIA: Papers will be graded on the sharpness of the observations, wisdom of the organization, precision of the
writing/grammar/punctuation, the level of interest generated by the comparisons and contrasts, and the degree to which the observations have been crafted into a unified argument.
Basic Writing Reminders:
-For this assignment, outside research is not only discouraged – it is forbidden. Work only with what you can get from the poem itself.
-Resist organizing your paper through a chronological treatment of each poem (papers that do this fall into the trap of merely retelling/summarizing the poem, whereas your true goal here is analysis). The strongest papers organize paragraphs around topic sentences that make a broad claim followed by specific details and evidence. Provide a concluding paragraph that recaps your point and brings out the larger significance involved in what you’ve demonstrated. End with a Works Cited listing the poems.
-To increase flow in your writing, be sure each paragraph has a strong topic sentence. Good topic sentences usually contain some sort of transition from the last paragraph and an argument (not just an observation but a debatable argument that advances your point) for the present one.
-Practice the important habit of granting writers poetic license to create speakers who are not themselves; rather than assuming the “I” in a first-person poem is the poet him- or her-self, it is safer to refer to them as the poem’s “speaker.”

Put entries in alphabetical order, not the order in which they have been assigned.

2. You immediately had me hooked with your introduction speaking about secrecy of the human life. I really enjoyed when you tied the introduction to the modern world and your poem. Basic MLA Style Format for an Annotated Bibliography
Format your page and list of citations in the same way you would a normal Works Cited page, then add your annotation at the end of it.
Title your bibliography “Works Cited” at the top of the page. Center it, but do not put it in bold face type.
Put entries in alphabetical order, not the order in which they have been assigned.
Use hanging indents
, as shown below. That is, the first line of the citation starts at the left margin. Subsequent lines are indented 5 spaces.
As with every other part of an MLA formatted essay, the bibliography is
double spaced
throughout.
The
annotation is a continuation of the citation
. Do not drop down to the next line to start the annotation.
The
right margin is the normal right margin
of your document.
There is a right way and a wrong way to write up these entries.
Don’t “report”
the arguments the author makes or tell readers the order in which those arguments are presented and count all of that reporting and listing as “summary” or annotation. Instead, restate in your own words the claims made by the writer in his/her essay.
Wrong way to do it
: "Marotti introduces his argument in the first section of the essay; then he moves on to talk about Petrarchan conventions. He ends the essay by talking about the political ramifications of Shakespeare's sonnets."
Right way to do it:
"Marotti’s argument here is that the sonnet genre must be understood in three ways: by examining the text itself, by examining the text in relation to others of its kind, and by exploring the social/historical environment in which it was published and circulated . . ."

Earlier weeks have focused on the importance of identifying and evaluating relevant scholarly literature, and then creating a synthesis that forms the literature review. In designing studies on social problems and in policy arenas, researchers build on these findings from earlier studies, often with new topics in the same or a related field, or with new populations, research design, or research methods.
This is described in your research text in the context of identifying elements to study, together with their relevance and relationships, as “investigators integrate their ideas, the observations of others, the research literature, and their own research” (O’Sullivan, Rassel, & Berner, 2008, p. 7). Just as scholarly researchers base their study designs on related research literature, so, too, must they investigate and apply various theories. Theories, in both researchers’ own and related disciplines, are built on and developed from earlier theories. In order to understand and be able to apply theories to research in public policy and administration, one must “appreciate the historical contexts through which it has developed and the cultural milieus during which important contributions were made to its body of ideas and knowledge” (Shafritz, Ott, & Jang, 2016, p. 2).

Application: The Civil Service System
How do public administrators become public administrators? Who recruits, selects, and hires them? How are they paid, promoted, and evaluated? The civil service system is similar to the human resources (HR) department at a private organization. That is, it is concerned with all of the issues and tasks related to employment within the organization. Since the "organization" in this case is the government, there also are many differences between the civil service system and the human resources practices at most private companies. Government organizations have very specific, rigid processes for recruitment, selection, promotion, and appraisal of employees. Many of these processes have been in place since the 19th century. For example, prospective civil servants must pass exams before even being considered for a government position. This is part of the merit system, which is one of the foundational principles of the civil service system. The merit system is based on the idea that the most qualified person should fill each position, rather than a person who simply has the "right" political connections. In addition, government positions all are given a specific classification, which determines the rate of pay. Although these rules sound logical in theory, in practice they often become extremely complicated, leading to dishonesty and inefficiency. As a result, efforts at civil service reform are common and span throughout history, from the Pendleton Act of 1881, to President George W. Bush's push for competitive sourcing in 2001. In this assignment, you examine what the civil service system comprises, as well as how it might be improved.

Donating food to community organizations
Building homes for the underprivileged
Volunteering at an after-school program

this Application Assignment, write a
1- to 2-page paper
that includes the following:
A list of the four organizations you located. Describe the mission or purpose of each. (Some examples or organizations and non-profits are listed in the website area).
Select one of the organizations for which you might like to volunteer or make some kind of contribution. Then describe the type(s) of personal actions you could take, with the support of the organization, to contribute to your community. Explain why you chose these particular actions and how this involvement aligns with Walden’s mission.
If you are already involved in community service activities, name and describe the organization with which you work. Also explain how you contribute to the organization’s activities.

Ms. Marren also discussed how the Visiting Nurse Services emergency preparedness/disaster response plan has changed since 9/11. In addition, Dr. Guerra and Dr. DiFerdinando both discussed disaster response
activities and strategies. Finally, the readings this week discussed the role of the nurse in bioterrorism and disaster management.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
