1. Our song choice was a song called “I Don’t Mind” by the
hardcore band Defeater. The lyrics in the song are descriptive
which means we could act out the lyrics to the song as if it is a
story. It also has a decent plotline for a narrative music video.
Using various different cuts and pans in the music video, we can
easily create the correct atmosphere for the purpose of the
music video.

2. Narrative Lyrics
Let's talk about the old days,
Let's talk about your friends, When making a music video that tells a story, it is always
Let's talk about the summer good to keep the lyrics in account. They can assist in the
And how you wish it wouldn't end. portraying of the story very well and will make the music
video not only easier for the audience to understand, but for
Did I forget to tell you, the people to make as well because they will already have a
How pretty you looked in that dress? template for the video.
In the first time that I saw you,
You cleaned the mess from my head.
And I don't mind,
And I don't mind,
If we take our time,
If we take our time.
'Cause I'm all yours
No,
If you're all mine.
I don't mind.
Something I've been meanin' to tell you,
Lets go walkin' on the boardwalk,
About three years and a day.
Dip our feet into the sea.
I'd very much like to get married,
Lets find ourselves lost for hours,
Maybe have kids and move away,
Until we find ourselves a drink.
'Cause there ain't nothing like your smile,
Lets talk that sun into setting,
Your legs and those eyes.
Just need the sound of your voice.
I will beg and steal and borrow
Need that calming and the comfort,
To keep you safe your whole life.
Something to drown out the noise.
And I don't mind,
If we take our time,
'Cause I'm all yours
If you're all mine.
3. Initial Ideas for Video/Story
The current idea for our music video is to create a story line bases off the memories
of the song writer and the character they represent. A the beginning of the song the
lyrics say;
‘Let's talk about the old days,
Let's talk about your friends,
Let's talk about the summer
And how you wish it wouldn't end.’
We have decided to use the lyrics as our story and so we will be telling the story as a
memory. The clip that will be show as the songs intro is played will be of a girl
drawing a picture of the two characters together and while this happens the Vocals
of the lyrics will come through and then after the first line or so is said the scene will
cut into a clip of the couple walking down a path in the summer shot from the point
of view of the guy. The Mise-en-scene for this will be black a white to a bright
colourful scene, this could mean that we have to change the brightness levels in
editing but we are prepared to do so.
4. Initial Ideas for Video/Story continued…
As we move through the video we will keep to the narrative of the lyrics as much
as possible and in doing so we be breaking some of the conventions of the hard-
core genre which the band belongs to, although the song its self does so anyway.
There will be times where we substitute the lyrics narrative image for things
similar, for instance the lyrics say
‘Lets go walkin' on the boardwalk,
Dip our feet into the sea.’
We plan to use 9 Bridges north of Glinton to shoot the couple walk along side
the water on the gravel in substitute for a boardwalk and then instead of dipping
feet into the sea we will have our actors dip their feet briefly into the river.
For some of the video we will be showing generic summer couple clips to make
up for the lack of interesting lyrics or to fill in the space where the narrative may
not be achievable.
5. Editing the Video
The editing of the video should be fairly simple and easy to do.
-We will probably have to change the brightness and colour
contrast on our clips to make the video look more like summer.
-We have a black and white scene which will require some
editing converting the colour clip into a black and white video
clip.
-We will be including Fade cuts for some of the slower paced
clip changes to coincide with the different audio paces.
-Straight/ jump cuts will be used for the majority of the other
clip/scene changes.
