How a Retro Music Video Challenges and Develops Genre Conventions
1. 1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT USE,
DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF
REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS ?
2. Opening Shot
In the opening title I’ve decided to use
Courier New for the title font since I
thought this could be reminiscent of the
vintage/retro feel I was trying to present in
my video. I took inspiration from the “Two
Weeks of Love Making” sequence in the
film Submarine where a similar font was
employed. I though that immediately
establishing the vintage film look of the
video was important since this is quite
popular within the alternative genre a
3. Opening Shot
In the first shot of my video I wanted to immediately
establish the romance narrative and set the tone for the
rest of the video. Here I’ve also used a faded and saturated
look for the footage, perhaps also establishing the dreamy
retro setting.
This could conform to many narrative videos within the
genre since the romance narrative is quite common. For
example, in videos such asWhereWe Go by Seapony.
However, it may also contrast many videos within in the
genre since many make the choice to feature the artist
within the first few shots. This is evident in videos such as
SweaterWeather byThe Neighborhood andYound &
Beautiful by Lana Del Rey.
4. Super 8 Film
Look
In my video I made the decision of using a super 8 film
filter on my footage as well as lower the frame rate of the
footage. This was in order to create the retro look I wanted
for the video and also convey the sense of nostalgia
surrounding the new relationship in the narrative.
This could be considered conventional of contemporary
music videos of the genre. For example, artists such as
Kehlani chosing to employ the super 8 look in her videos.
As well as this,Arctic Monkeys have also decided to use
retro film effects in their videos e.g. Don’t Sit Back Cause
I've MovedYour Chair and Fluorescent Adolescent.
5. Colour
Grading
I’ve used pink hues throughout the whole of
the video to give it a hazy feel and strengthen
the romance and nostalgia that I wanted to
convey.
Many videos use colour grading in this way to
elicit a mood or feeling. Therefore the video
could be considered conventional in a sense.
However, my video could be seen to develop
this since I've used colour and tone more
noticeably than others do in order to create a
more stylised look.
6. Setting and
Location
In the video I've used locations such as the
beach, the pier, and the arcade since I
associate these places with new love/ new
relationships and therefore thought this a
good place to start the video.
I think this could fit conventions of the
genre to a degree, especially those with a
romance theme. For example, I Always
Knew byTheVaccines takes place within a
fairground setting similar to an arcade.
7. Use of Retro
Props
In the video I've used objects that are
reminiscent of the retro aesthetic I've tried
to put across in the video.
This could be considered conventional in
music videos due to the rise in popularity of
retro iconography in many contemporary
music videos e.g. Colours by Halsey.
8. VHS
Recording
Towards the end of the video I’ve includedVHS
style footage to add an authenticity to the
video.
I think this could perhaps challenge the
common the normal conventions of music
videos within the indie/alternative genre since
many artists chose to feature themselves in
the narrative.Through including theseVHS
clips I think I'm developing conventions of
videos by giving it a different sort of
realism/authenticity.
9. Romance
Narrative
In my video I’ve stuck to a rather
conventional romance narrative, following
a couple in the early stages of love. This sort
of narrative is popular inside and outside of
the alternative genre and can be seen in
many other music videos from other bands
such as Lust for Life by Lana Del Rey.
