2. The whole reason for developing the
first photograph, was to make it
easier for him to keep pictures,
instead of having them painted.
This is the first ever
photograph, which was
produced by Nicéphore
Niépce, who died in 1833.
It took eight hours to
develop the first
photograph, by using a
paste made up of a silver Nicéphore Niépce, circa
1795.

acid, then cooking salt

3. Sir John Herschel was the first
person to think about and create ‘The
cyanotype process’
The whole reason behind the
invention was because Sir. Herschel
was an astronomer, and wanted to
keep permanent copies of his work.
A chemical he used to create the
process was hyposulphite of soda.

first photo negative in 1840.

6. Frederick Scott Archer
designed and invented
wet collodion in 1851.
He then later went on
to project the images
onto glass, copper and
other metals. He
engraved the image onto
these materials, hoping
to get a permanent
result.
7. Eadweard James
Muybridge, born in
Kingston upon Thames,
used 12 photos of a
galloping horse, and
attached them together
to create the first ever
motion-picture
projection.
He immigrated to the
United States as a young
man but remained
obscure until 1868, when
his large photographs of
Yosemite Valley,
California, made him
world famous. Muybridge
is known for his
pioneering work on animal

In 1905 Oscar Barnsck became
head of development of the camera
company Leitz in Wetzlar, Hesse,
Germany. He was the driving force

mass-marketed 35mm camera.
Barnack suffered from asthma, and
sought to reduce the size and
weight of cameras and supporting
equipment used for outdoor
photography. His 35mm design
