9. Edit = Cutting
• Comes from physically cutting up film reel to remove unwanted
footage and sticking it back together.
• In America the term cut puts an emphasis on separating, or
removing footage.
• In the UK film the term cut can refer to joining together footage.
• Why does cutting or editing a film work?
10. Since 1996…
• All Oscar winning films have been
digitally edited.
• Before that all Oscar winners were
edited using a length of film reel.
• During the making of Apocalypse Now,
editors had 1,250,000 feet of film to
work through. The equivalent of 230
hours.
• This took 2 years to edit, and had an
average of 1.5 cuts per day.
11. Digital Editing…
• With the addition of digital video
and editing equipment such as;
Adobe Premiere Pro this has sped
up the process.
• How else has it improved an
editors job?
• In the UK, film is captured at a
frame rate of 24 frames (pictures)
per second (24fps). Why do we
capture at 24fps?
12. In Pairs discuss how editors might be
similar to the following professions:
A tour guide A bomb disposal expert
A surgeon A Magician
