Ecological Concerns In The 1970s
Natural resources are a vital part of communities throughout the United States. Concerns regarding
energy and the alternatives to using energy. The issues concerning natural resources have been
apparent for multiple decades.
Ecological concerns have been significant, individuals and groups have tried to combat them. Many
of the ecological concerns in the 1970's are still present today. Issues have been ongoing for years
and that fact shows how crucial the concern are. According to Mulligan (2010), "The ecological
concerns of the 1970s proved an important stimulus to a broader concept of security, and the
environment became a requisite component in the new security agenda" (p.82). In the 1970's, many
people were motivated by these ecological concerns. The long term effects to the environment
brought about a new sense of urgency. The urgency was displayed through new plans to combat
environmental issues. Energy security was an issue in the 1970's and still is today. ... Show more

Energy security encompassing having affordable and reliable energy available while ensuing it is
not detrimental to other natural resources. According to Mulligan (2010), "... the world's most
widely traded fuel, oil accounts for some 34 percent of primary energy consumption. Because
resources are concentrated in a relatively small number of states, many other states depend upon a
functioning global market and the continuing availability of imports" (p.79). The system the world
obtains its fuel is one which is dependent of other countries, besides the United States. Relying on
other countries can be detrimental to the United States and cause problems. Many would like to see
alternatives to using natural resources. Alternatives are available to help with multiple energy

IASB Conceptual Framework
To,
Hans Hoogervorst
IASB Chairman
London, UK
Date: Nov 11, 2017
Dear Sir,
I am writing this report in order to outline one change that I believe needs to be made to the
Conceptual Framework. I have attached the report that details the change and the rationale for the
change for your kind consideration.
Thanking You,
Sincerely,
Your Name,

Introduction
The IASB conceptual framework is a framework of theories prepared by a standard setting body
aimed t dealing with practical problems faced by users of financial statements; the characteristics of
accounting information; the elements of financial statements and concepts for measuring and
reporting the elements such as assets and liabilities (Financial Times 2017). The benefit is that
uniform accounting standards can be applied to deal with common accounting problems; have fewer
standards to reduce the volume of standards; help accountants and auditors to resolve accounting
issues. However one of the issues is the going concern assumption, which does not appear to take
into account more serious risks that an enterprise may be associated with such as sustainability risks.
The problem/Change
One of the problems with the conceptual framework is that it does not address the principle of
sustainability within its going concern assumption even in the recent Summary of Tentative
Decisions related to the framework (IFRS 2017). Therefore it is proposed that the conceptual

The Ethical Concerns Of Psychotherapy
The Research of Psychotherapy Psychotherapy is an interactive process between two individuals or
more for the purpose of the improvement or the relief of the suffer of the person from compulsion,
troublesome behavior, depression, etc. The process has to be done by using the therapeutic methods
which logically relevant to the case under the regulations by laws and the profession. The therapist
required for psychotherapy is proficient in both the theories of formation of personality and the
techniques and theories of cognitive behavior modification. Founded by Sigmund Freud in the early
20th century, the Modern psychology has been developing and improved its concepts and theories.

It is equally forbidden for the professional secret to be communicated to another, including a doctor.
The same is true of other secrets." (Pope Pius XII). The holy father used confession as a similar
example of the principle: The secrets from a psychotherapy should never be revealed to others just
like that priests can never disclose the secrets from the confession room. The holly father understood
the importance of the secrets of the patients as a principle in psychotherapy. The dignity of a human
person can be protected when his or her deep secrets would not be known by others. However, the
principle might vary under different circumstances in psychotherapy.
The involvement of the third parties and their benefits are the main causes of the problem of
confidentiality. That in what kind of situation should a therapist disclose the content of the therapy is
actually hard to be determined. Whether or not leaking the secrets of the patients under certain
circumstances is ethical becomes one of biggest ethical dilemma in Psychotherapy. The typical cases
will be: If the patient is doing certain illegal activities that violates the law with no one knowing it,
should the therapist report it? Do the parents of the patient have the right to know the progress and
the content of the therapy? Should the potential victims that might be harmed by the patients be
aware of his or her situations? The ways that a therapist handles the problem might cause very
critical results.

Neel Noddings
The concept of care and caring relationships vary from person to person. Author Nel Noddings
addresses these concepts in her 2005 book The Challenge to Care in Schools: An Alternative
Approach to Education. Once idea that Noddings discusses is caring for distant others; distant others
would be the people you see on a day to day basis but are not connect with emotionally. She
suggests that we are not obligated to care for distant others but I have a differing view. In my
opinion, we are obligated to care for distant others by watching out for/warning others about dangers
that may negatively impact their lives Caring for those who are not well connected with us as
individuals is a delicate phenomenon. Nel Noddings' addresses this idea in her ... Show more

As see states on page 116, "caring at a distance is fraught with difficulties." (Noddings, 2005)
"Finally, when we have the power and desire to act at a distance, it is tempting to initiate and
control. We are too impatient or too confident or too puffed up with our own righteous sense of
responsibility to listen and encourage initiative from others. (Noddings, 2005) Essentially, Noddings'
is trying to say that we –human beings–are too busy in our lives to worry about the wellbeing of
those who are distant from us. It is difficult to care for distant others in Noddings' sense of care
because caring relationships require engrossment from carer to cared–for, and acknowledgement of
the engrossment from cared–for to carer. "...we (here in the United States, for example) could not, as
individuals, be obligated to care for starving children in Africa because there is no way for most of
us to see caring through to its completion. We might sympathetically send $10 to Oxfam or some
other relief organization, but we have no reliable method of knowing whether our money will be
used to relieve hunger...I still think this is an accurate descriptive account of a major difficulty in
trying to care at a distance." (p.

The Is A Conflict And Concern
Mislabeling as a Conflict and Concern Despite the many positives that come with labeling,
mislabeling is negative that hurts labeling legislation. Mislabeling can negatively effects consumers
by not allowing them to make informed decisions regarding their labeled purchases and possibly
harming their health due to "incorrect" mercury intake. Mislabeling also hurts fisheries because
threatened species may be under more fishing pressure than previously assumed. Lastly, mislabeling
breaks import and export seafood regulations both internationally and nationally (Jacquet, 2008).
Fishermen and seafood companies are misrepresenting their product for one reason and that is
financial incentives. Unwanted species can be renamed to sound more appetizing, increasing profits
in return (Jacquet, 2008).
Mislabeling causes a lack of traceability and an issue in re–labeling. For example a report
discovered that illegal amounts of Patagonian tooth fish enter the U.S. hidden amongst other seafood
or under another name, frozen fish fillet or crayfish (Jacquet, 2007/2008). Even more recently
Oceana, an Ocean conservation group, revealed a study that 30% of sold shrimp products in the
United States are misrepresented. Of that 30%, 15% of the tested shrimp are completely mislabeled
in production method (wild–caught vs. farm–raised) or species type (LeTrent, 2014). Some of
Oceana's results, reported in Figure 1, show the alarming amount of mislabeled fish in restaurants,

Developing Compassion Essay
a merciless event, it is selfish without even realizing it. Doing good deeds does not make us a good
individual, it just makes us decent. The benefits of generosity for both our physical and mental
health are outstanding. generosity reduces stress, supports one's physical health, enhances one's
sense of purpose, and helps fight depression, it has also been shown to increase one's lifespan
because all the health benefits of not being stressed. You may think you are being selfless, but you
are also benefiting yourself in a way you did not know about. Developing compassion increases our
happiness. In an experiment published in Science by Harvard Business School professor Michael
Norton, they gave money to; two sets of groups, one that spent money on themselves and the other
spent it on other people. It was found that the people who bought presents for others showed an
increase in happiness, this was even the case with children giving treats to others. We are using an
unselfish event and making for an ego boost. However, by doing so we need to become conscious of
the world around us. As we develop more of an awareness we become more concerned about what is
going on around us. Therefore, we carry guilt for simple things like throwing a cigarette on the
ground, we may feel guilty for a bit, but we can always change our actions and help the world
around us. Compassion is simple and uses common sense, it is humble and straightforward. Being
compassionate is difficult for those who

Israeli Security Concerns
Abstract The following essay takes a realist approach to the issue of Israel's refugee problem. The
essay addresses the security issue of the 'Right of Return 'where more than 4 million Palestinian
termed refugees clamor to return to their homes that they were displaced from during the 1948 war.
Whilst Palestinians demand the right to return to their Israeli–located homes under the right of
United Nations General Assembly article 11 of Resolution 194, Israelis fear the displacement of
their state by a huge and exponential number of Palestinian refugees returning. The essay
summarizes historical points that constitute the problem. Analysis of the problems shows that the
traditional definition of 'refugee' has been corrupted to suit UNRWA agenda where the refugee
number has grown and will continue to grow to absurd lengths. One policy therefore recommends
that the UN amend this definition to reflect a more solid reality. An alternate policy recommends
that the UNRWA be replaced by its more affective predecessor, the UNHRCA. The essay, too,
recommends that America work in amending this change since by so doing America will be
assisting her own terrorist problem. Table of contents A "Realistic" Approach to Regional Security

Lack Of Empathy In American Society
Empathy is the ability to understand what another person is feeling (Posick 1). In order to show
empathy you must see things from another person's eyes, allowing you to understand and relate to
what they are feeling. Naturally for us as humans, it is easier to empathize with others who have
been through similar situations or face similar problems as we do. If we as citizens could begin to be
more empathic as a whole, we would bring an end to several major problems that we face in our
daily lives as Americans, and as people as a whole. Empathy is needed in American society. One
reason why empathy is needed in society is to reduce racism. Studies show that "perspective taking

If Americans made an effort to spread empathy it would end a large amount of ignorance and self–
centered thinking that leads to seemingly senseless killings such as the shooting in Charlestown by
Dylann Roof. Lack of empathy comes almost naturally to citizens in America who are so used to
doing what is considered normal in their culture. There are examples nearly every day of people
lacking empathy, which causes them to go to extremes in pursuit of money, power, or
acknowledgement, causing them to ruin their lives by making irrational decisions. Not only does
empathy prevent the natural biases created through cultural practices, it also allows individuals to
think more critically about the effects of their actions. One might say that racism is pure ignorance,
anti–intellectualism has nothing to do with empathy, and that crime is merely just

The Growing Concerns On Privacy
The growing concerns on privacy are rapidly changing. Though a new worry in the online world,
these troubles with privacy violations have existed far before the Internet was even invented. It used
to be abnormal to hand out personal information, like an address or birthdate; however, now these
are the blanks that users fill out on almost every social media site they join. The information that is
gladly given away, used to be protected for fear of identity theft. So what has dramatically changed
in order to change these morals? Some believe that the invention of the Internet has caused people to
believe that they are safe behind the screen. They place false hope and trust in social media, so the
question is where these accusations are originating from. Have these privacy disgruntlements been
thrown away over the hopes of achieving some sort of online popularity persona? Or is the
generation stuck inside a online labyrinth that entices sharing rather than secrets? [AP] Privacy has
become a very skewed concept in the eyes of the Facebook community. Individuals take what they
would normally consider private information, and display within the profile outline for Facebook.
What is considered sensitive information and private personal stories, people share and repost to
their walls. Facebook uses what the "federal law considers so private [that it can't] be just in job
interviews; such as age, sex, birthplace, religion. " (Grimmelmann, The Privacy Virus) So why is

Ethical Concerns In The Military
Ethical concerns of AI continue to plague the question whether AI belongs in the military. As it
concerns many, there are some very good ethical reasons to pursue AI use in military circumstances.
Firstly, AI use in the military could potentially lessen casualties in warfare. For example, AI robotic
use in warfare could open the possibility of better decision making. "Before responding with lethal
forces, robots can integrate more information from more sources far more quickly than a human can
in real time. This information and data can arise from multiple remote sensors and intelligence."
(Arkin, 2009) . This ethical gain could possibly almost eliminate the risk for mistake. The use of AI
robotics could also show its benefits in stressful

Values Of Compassio Forgiveness
We all have the ability to be compassionate towards others and forgive. Humans are born as
narcissistic beings; from the moment of birth we are selfish to our own needs. Perhaps, it has
survival value. We cry when we are hungry. We do not know or care that our parents might be busy,
in a literal sense, we are capable only of thinking of and responding to our own needs. We are, as
infants, not even capable of realizing that other people have needs, desires, or a life outside of us. As
we grow up over time, ideally, we learn compassion it becomes natural to most of us, but only to a
certain point. As such, most people never genuinely become good at it. Compassion is the ability to
put ourselves in someone else's shoes, imagine things from their perspective, and then to feel
kindness for them and seek understanding of them even if what they do is harmful to us. This
usually goes against our needs and desires, and is at odds with our own experiences. ... Show more

It does not mean the person occupies the same place in your life; nor does it imply that you carry on
as if the transgression never happened. You can forgive someone and resolve never to see them
again. You don't distance yourself out of anger or spite but out of respect for yourself; out of a
healthy need to set new boundaries. Forgiving someone is not a gift to the person who hurt you but
rather a gift to yourself. The goal of forgiveness is freedom from resentment, bitterness, anger or
hatred (Macaskill, Maltby and Day, 2002). Harbouring these feelings cannot hurt another person but
can cause you great harm. Chapter 7 accurately describes compassion and forgiveness. It details that
the key to compassion and forgiveness lies within caring for others, forgiving the mistakes of others
and mostly importantly forgiving yourself for your own mistakes. Ultimately, one cannot live
harmoniously without out compassion and forgiveness in their

Why Is Empathy Important In Human Services
Conflicting messages will inevitably hinder our communication and our ability to help those we
serve.
The Skill of Empathy Another important skill in the field of human services would be empathy. In
the last two years, I have learned the difference between sympathy and empathy. Sympathy actually
separates and isolates individuals, while empathy empowers them. As helpers, we cannot stand on a
pedestal reaching down and effectively help others. Empathy allows us to bring others up to equal
grounds where we can be much more effective.
Some research even suggest that empathy is the key. It has been suggested that individuals often
have the tools they need to live fulfilling lives and to better themselves, if only given the power to
believe. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All different facets of the human services field require a professional relationship. This field of
service involves helping people, and in order to help people, we must enter into some form of
relationship. I believe that respect is a key element of a successful relationship. As helpers, we must
be able to respect others. We must respect their views and opinions; we must respect their customs
and beliefs; and we must respect their individual right of choice. I believe many of the basic
fundamentals of human service, such as confidentiality, empathy, and even antonym, can fall under
the umbrella of respect. If I truly respect, another I will not try to force my own agenda, and if I
truly respect another, I will keep in confidence the information they have shared. I believe that
respect is a right that should be granted to everyone without limitations, however, respect doesn't
require agreement or even acceptance. I have developed the ability to respect the views of others
without conforming, which for me is a true sign of personal growth. The last two years has taught
me that I can find validation without conformity, and that I can respect and even admire the diversity

Sympathy in The Reprimand Sympathy is an extension of empathic concern, or the perception,
understanding, and reaction to the distress or need of another human being. Sympathy must be given
and received in order for the world to operate because all humans make mistakes that impact other
people's lives. The Reprimand is a short "phone play" written by Jane Anderson in 2000. The two
characters, Rhona and Mim, have a confrontation about what Rhona believes to be an inappropriate
remark during a meeting. In The Reprimand, Mim deserves the most sympathy from the audience

just like Mim is degraded by Rhona. Rhona does not deserve the sympathy of the audience because
she did not handle the situation in a professional manner. She is too forceful and degrading to Mim
when she confronts her about Mim's comment. Rhona says, "but you didn't say better, you said
bigger" (Anderson 1783). She corrects what Mim meant by her comment to make her sound like she
was trying to be mean, when she actually was trying to do something nice for her because it was
Rhona's project. She was implying that Rhona deserved the big chair because it was her project and
she would most likely be leading the meeting with the other employees. This act of kindness and
respect is turned around to be mean and disrespectful by Rhona. Rhona says, "Honey, there was a
reason why Dick and Danny asked you all the follow–up questions" (Anderson 1784). Rhona is
implying to Mim that she took the attention away from her even though she is the one who is in
charge of the project. Sympathy should not be given to Rhona because she comes across as a selfish
woman who just wants to be the center of attention. Most people do not appreciate this type of
personality. One last meaningful thing that Rhona

Concerns in the Game
Collegiate sports have progressed to one of the most highly profitable industries in the U.S. today.
Through the years, these institutions have developed, marketed, and optimized a method to generate
revenue of high levels. Yet, no one seems to have a problem with the fact that these players are
being utilized and objectified for their talents. Each athlete must give up more than they should,
without reasonable benefits. In fact, The University of Alabama made nearly $143.5 million in
revenue alone during the 2012–2013 year (Solomon). Exactly $0 went to the players for their in
season efforts. Players nowadays are highly recruited and not all of them are given large sums of
money to receive a degree from the highly acclaimed schools. In days past, athletes would be more
than willing to make any accommodations in order to play the game they love. However, over time
it has become more and more difficult. With the large amount of time spent in the classroom and on
the field, players are unable to work for much of the year. Fiscal issues is not all that is at stake
when it comes the college athletes today, but it is the major factor that turns this educational
institution into a highly profitable business. Young age athletes play for fun, exercise, friendships,
and most importantly dreams. Somewhere along the way we get lost in a maze of expectations.

The Victorians ' Concern With Morality
The Victorians' Concern with Morality "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the
age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of
incredulity..." (Charles Dickens). This quote helps to sum up the Victorian Era. The Victorian Era is
understood to have existed during the rule of Queen Victoria between 1837 to 1901. It was thought
to be an exciting period that saw various literary schools and artistic styles along with social and
political movements. The period was also described to have led to swift developments and changes
from advances in scientific, technological, and medical knowledge. It was reckoned as an era of
prosperity and political reform. However, in the modern world, the era has been perceived to have
been filled with numerous contradictions. Writers such as Alfred Tennyson, Robert Browning, and
Oscar Wilde all help to advance this conclusion. It was also evident due to the existence of social
movements that were concerned with promoting public morals after a class system that enforced
harsh living conditions were in place. Restraint and dignity coexisted with child labor and
prostitution with this transformation in the Victoria Era. The Victorian Age began with great
optimism and confidence which resulted in an economic boom besides growing prosperity, hence,
the prosperity led to doubt and uncertainty concerning Britain's position in the globe (Atlick

Due to the need to prove the effects of the harshness of reality, the modernist concerns of the post–
World War I period resulted in changing views on traditional Victorian values and a loss of
ontological ground. The Modernist movement saw a break from traditional Victorian values such as
having sex after marriage and the perception of sex before marriage and its consequences which is
illustrated through 'Hills Like White Elephants'. Hemingway explores the complex thoughts of the
characters Fig and the man through non–linear structure of dialogue. The process of abortion is new
to the woman who tries to receive reassurance from the man but through stream of consciousness, it
is apparent that the man is all too accepting of the abortion and desensitised to it "They just let the

continues to proclaim that the abortion is nothing and that he will love her regardless of her choice.

Introduction: Altruism is a form of pro–social behaviour in which a person will voluntarily help
another at some cost to themselves. The primary motivation for altruistic behaviour is seen as a
desire to improve the welfare of another person rather than the anticipation of some reward or for
any other reason that might indicate self–interest. One of the major problems for psychologists has
been determining what is truly altruistic and what might be better explained in terms of egoism.

However, it is possible that people who help in such situations do so to avoid punishment, such as
social disapproval that could arise as a result of not helping. To test that, further research where the
potential for negative social evaluation was manipulated, concern for disapproval of others did not
appear to explain why empathic concern motivated helping. (Fultz et al)
The negative state–releif model by Cialdini suggests that when we are experiencing negative states,
we are motivated to alleviate this condition by helping others, which is personally rewarding. People
learn during childhood that helping others is a positive behaviour that will make them feel good
about themselves. Therefore, the motivation for helping is for egoistic reasons, depending on the
anticipated emotional consequences. The primary objective in any behaviour that appears altruistic
is actually the enhancement of our own mood. Cialdini carried out a study, where participants were

Irony Of Empathy In Raymond Carver's Cathedral

Looking beyond Empathy is the ability to understand and vicariously share the feelings and thoughts
of other people. Empathic feelings are fundamental for humans in social and interpersonal life
because they enable human beings to tune their mental states to their social environment as well as
to understand others' intentions, actions, and behaviors. In particular, empathy for pain is a source of
deep emotional feelings and a strong trigger of prosocial behavior. In the fictional short "Cathedral",
written by Raymond Carver, the author cast significant irony: a narrator who ignorantly disdains

The elephant is seen as as the most compassionate creatures on earth. They care for those around
them, even if they are not of the same species. Their fellow creatures, humans, aren't as caring. They
pick fights, slaughter each other in wars, and even abandon one another for their own survival. In
this excerpt from Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, the author portrays the narrator as concerned
while Ruth and the other girls are contrasted as rude and apathetic to reveal how compassion is
lacking in the younger generations.
The author portrays the narrator as uneasy over Tommy's treatment from the other kids to show how
compassion is rare in young people. The narrator and the other girls were crowded around a window
waiting for the boys to pull a trick on Tommy. The narrator was unsettled and "searched for signs of
disapproval about what the boys were going to do to Tommy" (Ishiguro), but she was only met with
a "little laugh" (Ishiguro). The narrator knew something was going to happen to Tommy. She was
looking around for someone else to be just as anxious, and no one was. They even laughed a little at
the notation of caring about what is about to happen. The narrator was also worried for Tommy
because he was wearing his favorite polo and was "playing football in that"(Ishiguro). Tommy's shirt
would "get ruined'"(Ishiguro) by the muddy field. Tommy was playing football, a very hands–on
game. His favorite shirt was sure to be ruined by the roughness of the other players and

Concerns of a Metal World
Concerns of a Metal World Robots have always been a fascination though many Americans openly
discuss their concerns with what negative outcomes that automatons are capable of creating though
a lot of people fail to see the greater positive outcomes of assimilating these machines into our
society even though we are moving into that direction. This essay will discuss some of the pros and
cons of 3 main perspectives, which would be Commerce/Social, Medical, and Military with the
hope to persuade others into accepting robots. Many Americans are uneasy with the idea of robots in
the workforce or simply in public. Though machines are currently in our workforce working in basic

In giving hope creates a fine line that individuals can follow to gain confidence and reslience to the
crumbling world around them. While the fellowship disbanded from one another, Frodo and Sam
went about themselves to continue the task at hand. "Fellowship had failed" leaving Aragorn,
Legolas, and Gimli to construct a plan to keep the others back toegther. Throught the film, Merry
and Pippin had become very worried about their dear friends. "Do you think they are alive? Sam and
Frodo?" became repetitive words towards Aragorn. Aragorn had taken the reins on the new task to
reunite the Hobbits back toeghther. In the process of battle, wounds, and loss would continue to
erupt around them as they continued to their next destination. Although, loss of friends and new
challanges all around gave Merry and Pippin new tasks to complete. Through the tasks at hand
Merry and Pippin would begin to reminise of the times they had with their old pals back at the Shire.
Once again, the questions would arise of "Do you think they are alive Aragorn?". Aragorn simply
answers back and says "There is still hope.". In this it shows that Aragorn was unsure of the
outcome between Sam and Frodo, but did not want to give false hope to the Hobbits. Furthermore it
shows how Percy Jackson empahsized that through Aragorn, Merry and Pippin could

Empathy Star Trek
Star Trek: TNG and the Cultivation of Empathy
In this paper, I argue that watching Star Trek: The Next Generation cultivates empathy. Empathy is a
good that human beings ought to develop and having a sense of empathy is one of the best things in
life. Empathy consists in the capacity to understand what another person is going through from their
perspective. The reason that a sense of empathy is one of the best things in life is that it is
impossible to have deep and meaningful relationships with others when we don't have empathy.
Without empathy, we inevitably turn inward and live a lonely life. For this reason, empathy is one of
the best things in life.
Regular watching of Star Trek: TNG increases our capacity for empathy. The reason why this is the
case is that watching acts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now characters in Star Trek: TNG routinely show empathetic concern for one another. For instance,
when a race of cyborgs capture Jean–Luc Picard (captain of the Enterprise on the show), the crew of
the
Enterprise do everything in their power to rescue Picard. One of their main motivations for rescuing
Picard is their experience of the sense of distress that he experiences while in captivity. This is just
one instance where empathy is shown in the program, but it happens on a regular basis. In sum,
watching
Star Trek: TNG increases our capacity for empathy because the characters regularly display empathy
on the show and because we tend to imitate the actions that we see other human beings performing.
Someone might object to this argument by pointing out that characters on the show also display
cruelty that involves a lack of empathy. For instance, in one episode a malevolent being kills one of
the members for the crew for no apparent reason. If we watch this cruelty, then perhaps we
ourselves might behave more cruelly. But this objection can be refuted. Cruelty on the show is
always shown in

Empathy: Egan And Schroeder
Empathy is a key value in the role of the helper and is described one way by Egan and Schroeder as;
a personality trait that allows a person to feel what others feel and have the ability to understand
other people, from the inside. It is also a state of feeling for others that is situation specific and
understanding another person's experiences (Egan and Schroeder, 2009). Egan and Schroeder state
empathy is, a basic value that informs and drives all helping behavior and a method of
communication that involves three phases, empathic resonance, expressed empathy and received
empathy (Egan and Schroeder, 2009).
One way empathy is expressed is through active listening and deep interpersonal transactions (Egan
and Schroeder, 2009). Through interpersonal interactions, the helper tunes into the client's verbal
and nonverbal communication, listening for behaviours and the feelings while acknowledging they
are hearing and understanding the client's story. Verbal and nonverbal means of communication can
in the form of, body posture and movements, making eye contact, facial expressions and even voice
related behaviors such as pitch, spacing of words and even silence.

Examples Of Altrruism In A Streetcar Named Desire
I have always depended on the kindness of strangers – Blanche DuBois, A Streetcar Named Desire
Definition of Empathy and Altruism
Empathy derives from the German word Einfühlung, meaning to feel the suffering and troubles of
another from within (Clarke, 2014). The empathic concern that enlivens us to action and to alleviate
the perils, poverty or punishments borne by another. Humans devoid of empathy are bereft of
compassion and immune to the needs and welfare of another.
The renowned researcher Stephen Post defined altruism as "Unselfish delight in the wellbeing of
others and engagement in acts of care on their behalf". I would add that authentic altruistic
expression demands the wellbeing of another as paramount, often to the detriment ... Show more

Daniel Batson (1989) and his associates found out that regardless of anticipated mood enhancement,
high–empathy subjects helped more than low–empathy subjects. In other words, high–empathy
subjects would still helped more either under easy escape conditions or even when they could
probably get good mood to relieve from negative state without helping. Therefore, they concluded
that, obviously, something other than relieving negative state was motivating the helping behavior of
the high–empathy subjects in their studies. It contradicted with the theory proposed by Robert
Cialdini (1987) which supported that empathy–altruism hypothesis was actually the product of an
entirely egoistic desire for personal mood

How Empathetic Can Improve Relationships
There are many ways that being empathetic can improve relationships between people and nations.
Empathy gives people the ability to understand other people feelings. People who share empathy
with others are understanding, helpful and open minded. Understanding each other's emotions can
help keep a relationship strong and healthy. One way that empathetic can improve relationships
between people is putting themselves in the other persons situation. When you put yourself in
someone's shoes, you start to understand where they are coming from. Which will avoid arguments
and turmoil in that relationship. As for nations, that can be a great way to avoid wars. Empathy gives
people the chance to help others because it gives them a clear understanding

Adults And The Influence Of Empathy In Adults
As with many other skills, empathy is a learned skill that requires an awareness that other people
think, feel, and behave in ways that are both similar and different from one's self, or put simply,
being able to relate to and understand what another person is experiencing or feeling (McDonald &
Messinger, 2011). One of the first experiences that people have with empathy frequently appears as
a baby when we hear another infant cry (Szalavitz, 2010). Other research has shown that infants not
only favor adults who appear to be more helpful, but they also tend to offer voluntary help to adults
who appear to be having difficulties when reaching for something (Szalavitz, 2010). Therefore,
according to this research, it might be suggested that whether

Police Privacy Concerns
1.3 Privacy Concerns
While police are utilizing body cameras, it is vital to ensure privacy and confidentiality for any
information or person videotaped. That is why it is necessary for police departments to have detailed
guidelines in place. "Washington D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier recently cautioned that the video
footage will capture a broad range of information –– including police communications, passwords
and interiors of private residences –– that would need to be redacted before releasing video" (Vega,
2015, par. 7). This will take a good deal of time and resources as millions of hours of video
recordings will need to be stored and analyzed (Vega, 2015). Also, body cams worn by police could
result in a great deal of mass surveillance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the National Institute of Justice, at the end of 2013 only 25% of the 18,000 police
departments in the United States were using body cameras (Maney, 2014). This number has
increased greatly since 2013 as one–third of police departments are now outfitting policemen with
wearable cameras (Delong, 2015). The American Civil Liberties Union has voiced concerns about
privacy regarding footage recorded on body cameras and has asked questions about whether the
scene like that of a suicide or domestic battery be made public (Vega, 2015). In response to concerns
about privacy, the President of Citizen's for Privacy authorized this study to determine if the benefits
of police worn body cameras outweigh the impact on people's privacy and to establish some
recommendations to further protect citizen's privacy with the ever growing use of this

The Concept Of Compassion Fatigue
State of the Science Paper:
Compassion Fatigue
Katelyn Anderson
Fairleigh Dickinson University
A concept can be a word, an abstract or concrete thought, a phrase, or a symbolic statement.
"Concepts are formulated in words that enable people to communicate their meanings about realities
in the world and give meaning to phenomena that can directly or indirectly be seen, heard, tasted,
smelled or touched" (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p. 50). Concepts are the start of an idea, which can
lead to a thesis, research development, and eventually cause a change. Concepts are vital for the
development of nursing practice and for our patients, so that we can provide the best and most
appropriate care. The purpose of this paper is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This unique concept was identified in 1992 by Carla Joinson, a nurse, who identified compassion
fatigue by studying emergency room personnel. It was defined as, "a unique form of burnout that
affects individuals in caregiving roles" (Lombardo & Eyre, 2011). In 1995, there were developments
within compassion fatigue and the term secondary traumatic stress disorder (STSD) was formed
synonymously. The caring and empathetic relationships, which nurses strive to build with their
patients, can become overwhelming and have the potential to lead to compassion fatigue. As nurses,
we have an innate ability to care for others. Because of this, we find that we have put others before
ourselves, which makes for compassionate and empathetic nursing care, but can lead to internal
downfalls. There is a shift for the nurse, when providing nurturing care for patients becomes
difficult. The downfalls are seen after repeated exposure to stressful work environments, work
overload, lack of recognition and the repeated exposure to patients suffering, which nurses
attempted to relieve. With advancements in healthcare, prolonging of life, increasing physical and
emotional needs from patients and their families and the aging of American, nurses have an increase
in stressors and demands. Sabo (2011) discusses certain personality characteristics which can lead to
compassion fatigue. Some being type A personalities,

Empathy Research Papers
Empathy is defined as feeling for others and as the ability to understand the feelings, pains, or
hardships of others as if they were your own. While some believe that empathy is a choice and can
be manipulated by what we think about people from a certain, race, nationality, or group, others
think that it is part of a person's personality, and is hard to change. Despite these differences in
opinions, one thing is very clear. Empathy has many benefits that can help a person succeed in their
academics, business, and or life.
One of the main places where empathy comes into play is in school. Here is a quote that explains
one of the benefits of having empathy while in your teenage years, "Teenagers who are empathetic

Diabolical Characterization In The Open Boat
In the Open Boat by Stephen Crane, the correspondent's seems to show a change through his nature
of being a cynical man from the beginning of the story to the changed man he becomes toward the
end. I believe this change was caused by the brotherhood that was formed between the four men
along with the situation of them being lost at sea, which caused him to change and grow as a
character. I will support this claim with both textual evidence from the story and my own character
analysis of the character.
In the beginning of the Open Boat, the correspondent is portrayed as a hard–bitten character that has
seen it all, and believes that no joy can be found in the world. This is hinted in the brief introduction
of his character that Crane gives us, "The correspondent, pulling at the other oar, watched the waves
and wondered why he was there." (Crane 1048). We meet this character when he is rowing the boat,
something he complains about doing and is shown to detest. "The correspondent wondered
ingenuously how in the name of all that was sane could there be people who thought it amusing to
row a boat. It was not an amusement; it was a diabolical punishment" (Crane 1052). What the others
viewed as a small form of amusement, The correspondent made opposite opinion known when he
compared it to "diabolical punishment", however even though the correspondent has made his
hatred known for rowing. He is shown to be willing to do it to the point of exhaustion so he could

Rising Strong Sparknotes
Book Assignment As I read Rising Strong by Brene Brown it really hit home with me. In her book
she talks about something most people do not like to deal with, which is shame and being
vulnerable. We all feel shame no matter who we are. Some people take it better than others do.
Some people take their shame and burry it deep down inside them and others takes their shame and
makes great success stories out of it. Brene Brown talks about how much she struggled with being
vulnerable and how she dealt with it. She starts off her book with a long presentation of her book
and how we can approach shame. She enlightens us that Rising Strong is regarding getting to the
heart of the most excruciating and uncomfortable minutes we 've ever experienced, getting genuine
about the path in which those moments have made us feel and being sufficiently striking to consider
ourselves responsible to get up and develop from the past as we move into what more there is to
come. She likewise focuses on that yes, most definitely, disappointment is excruciating,
exceptionally difficult. Tragically be that as it may, the stories of battle to achievement that we 're so
regularly told do more than see their way through the pain and make their way to be success stories.
Brown states that all we need are, "a critical mass of bad asses who are willing to dare, fall, feel
their way through tough emotion, and rise again" (Brown, 2015, p. 30.) In chapter one of her book
Rising Strong, Brown talks about the

Figley's Model Of The Compassion Fatigue Process
Lipchick (2002), describes the therapist–client relationship as a structure coupling between to
unique human beings in complementary roles. In a healthcare context, Sabo (2006) states that
empathy and compassion are critical aspects involved in understanding the clients' needs to create a
therapeutic relationship between client and nurse. The integration of the concepts of compassion and
empathy could become a negative facilitator of 'the cost of caring for others' later described as
Compassion Fatigue (CF) (Figley, 1995). The definition is contested, though; the first definition was
proposed by Joinson (1992) characterising CF as a unique form of burnout that nurses experience
because of exhaustion. Coetzee and Klopper (2010) explain that CF is a concept established in
relation to the burnout of nurses'. Their duty to tend to sick and traumatised patients exposes them to
pain and suffering daily, and thus many lose their ability to nurture. Supported by Pack and Roberts
(2012), CF occurs when individuals are unable to continue bearing the trauma of others,
consequently leading to a significant reduction in wellbeing and work capacity. Whilst CF has
regularly been observed in a healthcare environment, no such research has been conducted in a sport
and exercise context.
Figley's (2002) model of the Compassion Fatigue Process enables a further understanding of the
factors contributing to CF and some key terms surrounding it. The model is based on assumptions

Ecological Concerns In The 1970S

  • 1. Ecological Concerns In The 1970s Natural resources are a vital part of communities throughout the United States. Concerns regarding energy and the alternatives to using energy. The issues concerning natural resources have been apparent for multiple decades. Ecological concerns have been significant, individuals and groups have tried to combat them. Many of the ecological concerns in the 1970's are still present today. Issues have been ongoing for years and that fact shows how crucial the concern are. According to Mulligan (2010), "The ecological concerns of the 1970s proved an important stimulus to a broader concept of security, and the environment became a requisite component in the new security agenda" (p.82). In the 1970's, many people were motivated by these ecological concerns. The long term effects to the environment brought about a new sense of urgency. The urgency was displayed through new plans to combat environmental issues. Energy security was an issue in the 1970's and still is today. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The system the world obtains its fuel is one which is dependent of other countries, besides the United States. Relying on other countries can be detrimental to the United States and cause problems. • 3. IASB Conceptual Framework To, Hans Hoogervorst IASB Chairman London, UK Date: Nov 11, 2017 Dear Sir, I am writing this report in order to outline one change that I believe needs to be made to the Conceptual Framework. I have attached the report that details the change and the rationale for the change for your kind consideration. Thanking You, Sincerely, Your Name, Student, Name of University Course Name Introduction The IASB conceptual framework is a framework of theories prepared by a standard setting body aimed t dealing with practical problems faced by users of financial statements; the characteristics of accounting information; the elements of financial statements and concepts for measuring and reporting the elements such as assets and liabilities (Financial Times 2017). The benefit is that uniform accounting standards can be applied to deal with common accounting problems; have fewer standards to reduce the volume of standards; help accountants and auditors to resolve accounting issues. However one of the issues is the going concern assumption, which does not appear to take into account more serious risks that an enterprise may be associated with such as sustainability risks. The problem/Change One of the problems with the conceptual framework is that it does not address the principle of sustainability within its going concern assumption even in the recent Summary of Tentative Decisions related to the framework (IFRS 2017). Therefore it is proposed that the conceptual framework

The Ethical Concerns Of Psychotherapy The Research of Psychotherapy Psychotherapy is an interactive process between two individuals or more for the purpose of the improvement or the relief of the suffer of the person from compulsion, troublesome behavior, depression, etc. The process has to be done by using the therapeutic methods which logically relevant to the case under the regulations by laws and the profession. The holly father understood the importance of the secrets of the patients as a principle in psychotherapy. The dignity of a human person can be protected when his or her deep secrets would not be known by others. However, the principle might vary under different circumstances in psychotherapy. The involvement of the third parties and their benefits are the main causes of the problem of confidentiality. That in what kind of situation should a therapist disclose the content of the therapy is actually hard to be determined. Whether or not leaking the secrets of the patients under certain circumstances is ethical becomes one of biggest ethical dilemma in Psychotherapy. The typical cases will be: If the patient is doing certain illegal activities that violates the law with no one knowing it, should the therapist report it? Do the parents of the patient have the right to know the progress and the content of the therapy? Should the potential victims that might be harmed by the patients be aware of his or her situations? The ways that a therapist handles the problem might cause very critical results. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Neel Noddings The concept of care and caring relationships vary from person to person. Author Nel Noddings addresses these concepts in her 2005 book The Challenge to Care in Schools: An Alternative Approach to Education. Once idea that Noddings discusses is caring for distant others; distant others would be the people you see on a day to day basis but are not connect with emotionally. She suggests that we are not obligated to care for distant others but I have a differing view. In my opinion, we are obligated to care for distant others by watching out for/warning others about dangers that may negatively impact their lives Caring for those who are not well connected with us as individuals is a delicate phenomenon. (Noddings, 2005) "Finally, when we have the power and desire to act at a distance, it is tempting to initiate and control. We are too impatient or too confident or too puffed up with our own righteous sense of responsibility to listen and encourage initiative from others. (Noddings, 2005) Essentially, Noddings' is trying to say that we –human beings–are too busy in our lives to worry about the wellbeing of those who are distant from us. It is difficult to care for distant others in Noddings' sense of care because caring relationships require engrossment from carer to cared–for, and acknowledgement of the engrossment from cared–for to carer. "...we (here in the United States, for example) could not, as individuals, be obligated to care for starving children in Africa because there is no way for most of us to see caring through to its completion. We might sympathetically send $10 to Oxfam or some other relief organization, but we have no reliable method of knowing whether our money will be used to relieve hunger...I still think this is an accurate descriptive account of a major difficulty in trying to care at a distance." • 10. The Is A Conflict And Concern Mislabeling as a Conflict and Concern Despite the many positives that come with labeling, mislabeling is negative that hurts labeling legislation. Mislabeling can negatively effects consumers by not allowing them to make informed decisions regarding their labeled purchases and possibly harming their health due to "incorrect" mercury intake. Mislabeling also hurts fisheries because threatened species may be under more fishing pressure than previously assumed. Lastly, mislabeling breaks import and export seafood regulations both internationally and nationally (Jacquet, 2008). Fishermen and seafood companies are misrepresenting their product for one reason and that is financial incentives. Unwanted species can be renamed to sound more appetizing, increasing profits in return (Jacquet, 2008). Mislabeling causes a lack of traceability and an issue in re–labeling. For example a report discovered that illegal amounts of Patagonian tooth fish enter the U.S. hidden amongst other seafood or under another name, frozen fish fillet or crayfish (Jacquet, 2007/2008). Even more recently Oceana, an Ocean conservation group, revealed a study that 30% of sold shrimp products in the United States are misrepresented. Of that 30%, 15% of the tested shrimp are completely mislabeled in production method (wild–caught vs. farm–raised) or species type (LeTrent, 2014). Some of Oceana's results, reported in Figure 1, show the alarming amount of mislabeled fish in restaurants, sushi and different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Developing Compassion Essay a merciless event, it is selfish without even realizing it. Doing good deeds does not make us a good individual, it just makes us decent. The benefits of generosity for both our physical and mental health are outstanding. generosity reduces stress, supports one's physical health, enhances one's sense of purpose, and helps fight depression, it has also been shown to increase one's lifespan because all the health benefits of not being stressed. You may think you are being selfless, but you are also benefiting yourself in a way you did not know about. Developing compassion increases our happiness. In an experiment published in Science by Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton, they gave money to; two sets of groups, one that spent money on themselves and the other spent it on other people. It was found that the people who bought presents for others showed an increase in happiness, this was even the case with children giving treats to others. We are using an unselfish event and making for an ego boost. However, by doing so we need to become conscious of the world around us. As we develop more of an awareness we become more concerned about what is going on around us. Therefore, we carry guilt for simple things like throwing a cigarette on the ground, we may feel guilty for a bit, but we can always change our actions and help the world around us. Compassion is simple and uses common sense, it is humble and straightforward. Being compassionate is difficult for those who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Israeli Security Concerns Abstract The following essay takes a realist approach to the issue of Israel's refugee problem. The essay addresses the security issue of the 'Right of Return 'where more than 4 million Palestinian termed refugees clamor to return to their homes that they were displaced from during the 1948 war. Whilst Palestinians demand the right to return to their Israeli–located homes under the right of United Nations General Assembly article 11 of Resolution 194, Israelis fear the displacement of their state by a huge and exponential number of Palestinian refugees returning. The essay summarizes historical points that constitute the problem. Analysis of the problems shows that the traditional definition of 'refugee' has been corrupted to suit UNRWA agenda where the refugee number has grown and will continue to grow to absurd lengths. One policy therefore recommends that the UN amend this definition to reflect a more solid reality. An alternate policy recommends that the UNRWA be replaced by its more affective predecessor, the UNHRCA. The essay, too, recommends that America work in amending this change since by so doing America will be assisting her own terrorist problem. • 16. Lack Of Empathy In American Society Empathy is the ability to understand what another person is feeling (Posick 1). In order to show empathy you must see things from another person's eyes, allowing you to understand and relate to what they are feeling. Naturally for us as humans, it is easier to empathize with others who have been through similar situations or face similar problems as we do. If we as citizens could begin to be more empathic as a whole, we would bring an end to several major problems that we face in our daily lives as Americans, and as people as a whole. Empathy is needed in American society. One reason why empathy is needed in society is to reduce racism. Lack of empathy comes almost naturally to citizens in America who are so used to doing what is considered normal in their culture. There are examples nearly every day of people lacking empathy, which causes them to go to extremes in pursuit of money, power, or acknowledgement, causing them to ruin their lives by making irrational decisions. Not only does empathy prevent the natural biases created through cultural practices, it also allows individuals to think more critically about the effects of their actions. One might say that racism is pure ignorance, anti–intellectualism has nothing to do with empathy, and that crime is merely just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. The Growing Concerns On Privacy The growing concerns on privacy are rapidly changing. Though a new worry in the online world, these troubles with privacy violations have existed far before the Internet was even invented. It used to be abnormal to hand out personal information, like an address or birthdate; however, now these are the blanks that users fill out on almost every social media site they join. The information that is gladly given away, used to be protected for fear of identity theft. So what has dramatically changed in order to change these morals? Some believe that the invention of the Internet has caused people to believe that they are safe behind the screen. They place false hope and trust in social media, so the question is where these accusations are originating from. Have these privacy disgruntlements been thrown away over the hopes of achieving some sort of online popularity persona? Or is the generation stuck inside a online labyrinth that entices sharing rather than secrets? [AP] Privacy has become a very skewed concept in the eyes of the Facebook community. Individuals take what they would normally consider private information, and display within the profile outline for Facebook. What is considered sensitive information and private personal stories, people share and repost to their walls. Facebook uses what the "federal law considers so private [that it can't] be just in job interviews; such as age, sex, birthplace, religion. " (Grimmelmann, The Privacy Virus) So why is this ... • 22. Ethical Concerns In The Military Ethical concerns of AI continue to plague the question whether AI belongs in the military. As it concerns many, there are some very good ethical reasons to pursue AI use in military circumstances. Firstly, AI use in the military could potentially lessen casualties in warfare. For example, AI robotic use in warfare could open the possibility of better decision making. "Before responding with lethal forces, robots can integrate more information from more sources far more quickly than a human can in real time. This information and data can arise from multiple remote sensors and intelligence." (Arkin, 2009) . This ethical gain could possibly almost eliminate the risk for mistake. • 24. Values Of Compassio Forgiveness We all have the ability to be compassionate towards others and forgive. Humans are born as narcissistic beings; from the moment of birth we are selfish to our own needs. Perhaps, it has survival value. We cry when we are hungry. We do not know or care that our parents might be busy, in a literal sense, we are capable only of thinking of and responding to our own needs. We are, as infants, not even capable of realizing that other people have needs, desires, or a life outside of us. As we grow up over time, ideally, we learn compassion it becomes natural to most of us, but only to a certain point. As such, most people never genuinely become good at it. Compassion is the ability to put ourselves in someone else's shoes, imagine things from their perspective, and then to feel kindness for them and seek understanding of them even if what they do is harmful to us. This usually goes against our needs and desires, and is at odds with our own experiences. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It does not mean the person occupies the same place in your life; nor does it imply that you carry on as if the transgression never happened. You can forgive someone and resolve never to see them again. You don't distance yourself out of anger or spite but out of respect for yourself; out of a healthy need to set new boundaries. Forgiving someone is not a gift to the person who hurt you but rather a gift to yourself. The goal of forgiveness is freedom from resentment, bitterness, anger or hatred (Macaskill, Maltby and Day, 2002). Harbouring these feelings cannot hurt another person but can cause you great harm. • 26. Why Is Empathy Important In Human Services Conflicting messages will inevitably hinder our communication and our ability to help those we serve. The Skill of Empathy Another important skill in the field of human services would be empathy. In the last two years, I have learned the difference between sympathy and empathy. Sympathy actually separates and isolates individuals, while empathy empowers them. As helpers, we cannot stand on a pedestal reaching down and effectively help others. Empathy allows us to bring others up to equal grounds where we can be much more effective. Some research even suggest that empathy is the key. It has been suggested that individuals often have the tools they need to live fulfilling lives and to better themselves, if only given the power to believe. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All different facets of the human services field require a professional relationship. This field of service involves helping people, and in order to help people, we must enter into some form of relationship. I believe that respect is a key element of a successful relationship. As helpers, we must be able to respect others. We must respect their views and opinions; we must respect their customs and beliefs; and we must respect their individual right of choice. I believe many of the basic fundamentals of human service, such as confidentiality, empathy, and even antonym, can fall under the umbrella of respect. If I truly respect, another I will not try to force my own agenda, and if I truly respect another, I will keep in confidence the information they have shared. I believe that respect is a right that should be granted to everyone without limitations, however, respect doesn't require agreement or even acceptance. I have developed the ability to respect the views of others without conforming, which for me is a true sign of personal growth. Sympathy must be given and received in order for the world to operate because all humans make mistakes that impact other people's lives. The Reprimand is a short "phone play" written by Jane Anderson in 2000. The two characters, Rhona and Mim, have a confrontation about what Rhona believes to be an inappropriate remark during a meeting. She is too forceful and degrading to Mim when she confronts her about Mim's comment. Rhona says, "but you didn't say better, you said bigger" (Anderson 1783). She corrects what Mim meant by her comment to make her sound like she was trying to be mean, when she actually was trying to do something nice for her because it was Rhona's project. She was implying that Rhona deserved the big chair because it was her project and she would most likely be leading the meeting with the other employees. This act of kindness and respect is turned around to be mean and disrespectful by Rhona. Rhona says, "Honey, there was a reason why Dick and Danny asked you all the follow–up questions" (Anderson 1784). Rhona is implying to Mim that she took the attention away from her even though she is the one who is in charge of the project. Sympathy should not be given to Rhona because she comes across as a selfish woman who just wants to be the center of attention. Most people do not appreciate this type of personality. Through the years, these institutions have developed, marketed, and optimized a method to generate revenue of high levels. Yet, no one seems to have a problem with the fact that these players are being utilized and objectified for their talents. Each athlete must give up more than they should, without reasonable benefits. In fact, The University of Alabama made nearly $143.5 million in revenue alone during the 2012–2013 year (Solomon). Exactly $0 went to the players for their in season efforts. Players nowadays are highly recruited and not all of them are given large sums of money to receive a degree from the highly acclaimed schools. In days past, athletes would be more than willing to make any accommodations in order to play the game they love. However, over time it has become more and more difficult. With the large amount of time spent in the classroom and on the field, players are unable to work for much of the year. The Victorians ' Concern With Morality The Victorians' Concern with Morality "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity..." (Charles Dickens). This quote helps to sum up the Victorian Era. The Victorian Era is understood to have existed during the rule of Queen Victoria between 1837 to 1901. It was thought to be an exciting period that saw various literary schools and artistic styles along with social and political movements. The period was also described to have led to swift developments and changes from advances in scientific, technological, and medical knowledge. It was reckoned as an era of prosperity and political reform. However, in the modern world, the era has been perceived to have been filled with numerous contradictions. Writers such as Alfred Tennyson, Robert Browning, and Oscar Wilde all help to advance this conclusion. It was also evident due to the existence of social movements that were concerned with promoting public morals after a class system that enforced harsh living conditions were in place. Restraint and dignity coexisted with child labor and prostitution with this transformation in the Victoria Era. The Victorian Age began with great optimism and confidence which resulted in an economic boom besides growing prosperity, hence, the prosperity led to doubt and uncertainty concerning Britain's position in the globe (Atlick Richard). Modernism as a movement is an artistic reaction to the conventional art and literature of mid– to late 19th century. World War I introduced advanced technology and the introduction of industrialisation provoked Modernist writers to express their concerns about the changing society and the complexities it of through their works. The Modernist movement saw a break from traditional Victorian values such as having sex after marriage and the perception of sex before marriage and its consequences which is illustrated through 'Hills Like White Elephants'. Hemingway explores the complex thoughts of the characters Fig and the man through non–linear structure of dialogue. The process of abortion is new to the woman who tries to receive reassurance from the man but through stream of consciousness, it is apparent that the man is all too accepting of the abortion and desensitised to it "They just let the air in and then it's all perfectly natural." Hemingway portrays the man as an insensitive human as he continues to proclaim that the abortion is nothing and that he will love her regardless of her choice. Investigating Gender Differences in Helping Essay Investigating Gender Differences in Helping Aim: To find out whether subjects will help opposite gender students faster than same sex helper would. Introduction: Altruism is a form of pro–social behaviour in which a person will voluntarily help another at some cost to themselves. The primary motivation for altruistic behaviour is seen as a desire to improve the welfare of another person rather than the anticipation of some reward or for any other reason that might indicate self–interest. One of the major problems for psychologists has been determining what is truly altruistic and what might be better explained in terms of egoism. To test that, further research where the potential for negative social evaluation was manipulated, concern for disapproval of others did not appear to explain why empathic concern motivated helping. (Fultz et al) The negative state–releif model by Cialdini suggests that when we are experiencing negative states, we are motivated to alleviate this condition by helping others, which is personally rewarding. People learn during childhood that helping others is a positive behaviour that will make them feel good about themselves. Therefore, the motivation for helping is for egoistic reasons, depending on the anticipated emotional consequences. The primary objective in any behaviour that appears altruistic is actually the enhancement of our own mood. Irony Of Empathy In Raymond Carver's Cathedral Kiano Tran Professor Gray English 102 27 September, 2016 Looking beyond Empathy is the ability to understand and vicariously share the feelings and thoughts of other people. In particular, empathy for pain is a source of deep emotional feelings and a strong trigger of prosocial behavior. They care for those around them, even if they are not of the same species. Their fellow creatures, humans, aren't as caring. They pick fights, slaughter each other in wars, and even abandon one another for their own survival. In this excerpt from Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, the author portrays the narrator as concerned while Ruth and the other girls are contrasted as rude and apathetic to reveal how compassion is lacking in the younger generations. The author portrays the narrator as uneasy over Tommy's treatment from the other kids to show how compassion is rare in young people. The narrator and the other girls were crowded around a window waiting for the boys to pull a trick on Tommy. The narrator was unsettled and "searched for signs of disapproval about what the boys were going to do to Tommy" (Ishiguro), but she was only met with a "little laugh" (Ishiguro). The narrator knew something was going to happen to Tommy. She was looking around for someone else to be just as anxious, and no one was. They even laughed a little at the notation of caring about what is about to happen. The narrator was also worried for Tommy because he was wearing his favorite polo and was "playing football in that"(Ishiguro). Tommy's shirt would "get ruined'"(Ishiguro) by the muddy field. • 56. Empathy Star Trek Star Trek: TNG and the Cultivation of Empathy In this paper, I argue that watching Star Trek: The Next Generation cultivates empathy. Empathy is a good that human beings ought to develop and having a sense of empathy is one of the best things in life. Empathy consists in the capacity to understand what another person is going through from their perspective. The reason that a sense of empathy is one of the best things in life is that it is impossible to have deep and meaningful relationships with others when we don't have empathy. Without empathy, we inevitably turn inward and live a lonely life. For this reason, empathy is one of the best things in life. Regular watching of Star Trek: TNG increases our capacity for empathy. The reason why this is the case is that watching acts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now characters in Star Trek: TNG routinely show empathetic concern for one another. For instance, when a race of cyborgs capture Jean–Luc Picard (captain of the Enterprise on the show), the crew of the Enterprise do everything in their power to rescue Picard. One of their main motivations for rescuing Picard is their experience of the sense of distress that he experiences while in captivity. This is just one instance where empathy is shown in the program, but it happens on a regular basis. In sum, watching Star Trek: TNG increases our capacity for empathy because the characters regularly display empathy on the show and because we tend to imitate the actions that we see other human beings performing. Someone might object to this argument by pointing out that characters on the show also display cruelty that involves a lack of empathy. For instance, in one episode a malevolent being kills one of the members for the crew for no apparent reason. If we watch this cruelty, then perhaps we ourselves might behave more cruelly. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This unique concept was identified in 1992 by Carla Joinson, a nurse, who identified compassion fatigue by studying emergency room personnel. It was defined as, "a unique form of burnout that affects individuals in caregiving roles" (Lombardo & Eyre, 2011). In 1995, there were developments within compassion fatigue and the term secondary traumatic stress disorder (STSD) was formed synonymously. The caring and empathetic relationships, which nurses strive to build with their patients, can become overwhelming and have the potential to lead to compassion fatigue. As nurses, we have an innate ability to care for others. Because of this, we find that we have put others before ourselves, which makes for compassionate and empathetic nursing care, but can lead to internal downfalls. There is a shift for the nurse, when providing nurturing care for patients becomes difficult. The downfalls are seen after repeated exposure to stressful work environments, work overload, lack of recognition and the repeated exposure to patients suffering, which nurses attempted to relieve. With advancements in healthcare, prolonging of life, increasing physical and emotional needs from patients and their families and the aging of American, nurses have an increase in stressors and demands. Diabolical Characterization In The Open Boat In the Open Boat by Stephen Crane, the correspondent's seems to show a change through his nature of being a cynical man from the beginning of the story to the changed man he becomes toward the end. I believe this change was caused by the brotherhood that was formed between the four men along with the situation of them being lost at sea, which caused him to change and grow as a character. I will support this claim with both textual evidence from the story and my own character analysis of the character. In the beginning of the Open Boat, the correspondent is portrayed as a hard–bitten character that has seen it all, and believes that no joy can be found in the world. This is hinted in the brief introduction of his character that Crane gives us, "The correspondent, pulling at the other oar, watched the waves and wondered why he was there." (Crane 1048). We meet this character when he is rowing the boat, something he complains about doing and is shown to detest. "The correspondent wondered ingenuously how in the name of all that was sane could there be people who thought it amusing to row a boat. It was not an amusement; it was a diabolical punishment" (Crane 1052). In her book she talks about something most people do not like to deal with, which is shame and being vulnerable. We all feel shame no matter who we are. Some people take it better than others do. Some people take their shame and burry it deep down inside them and others takes their shame and makes great success stories out of it. Brene Brown talks about how much she struggled with being vulnerable and how she dealt with it. She starts off her book with a long presentation of her book and how we can approach shame. She enlightens us that Rising Strong is regarding getting to the heart of the most excruciating and uncomfortable minutes we 've ever experienced, getting genuine about the path in which those moments have made us feel and being sufficiently striking to consider ourselves responsible to get up and develop from the past as we move into what more there is to come. She likewise focuses on that yes, most definitely, disappointment is excruciating, exceptionally difficult. Tragically be that as it may, the stories of battle to achievement that we 're so regularly told do more than see their way through the pain and make their way to be success stories. Brown states that all we need are, "a critical mass of bad asses who are willing to dare, fall, feel their way through tough emotion, and rise again" (Brown, 2015, p. 30.) In a healthcare context, Sabo (2006) states that empathy and compassion are critical aspects involved in understanding the clients' needs to create a therapeutic relationship between client and nurse. The integration of the concepts of compassion and empathy could become a negative facilitator of 'the cost of caring for others' later described as Compassion Fatigue (CF) (Figley, 1995). The definition is contested, though; the first definition was proposed by Joinson (1992) characterising CF as a unique form of burnout that nurses experience because of exhaustion. Coetzee and Klopper (2010) explain that CF is a concept established in relation to the burnout of nurses'. Their duty to tend to sick and traumatised patients exposes them to pain and suffering daily, and thus many lose their ability to nurture. Supported by Pack and Roberts (2012), CF occurs when individuals are unable to continue bearing the trauma of others, consequently leading to a significant reduction in wellbeing and work capacity. Whilst CF has regularly been observed in a healthcare environment, no such research has been conducted in a sport and exercise context.
