What Was John Marshall Known For? John Marshall’s most memorable case would be the Marbury vs. Madison. Which was William Marbury, an end-of-term appointee of President John Adams to a justice of the peace position in the District of Columbia, brought suit against President Thomas Jefferson’s Secretary of State, James Madison, seeking delivery of his commission. Marshall and the Supreme Court refused to rule on the case in question and instead said that the instrument that William Marbury used to bring the case to the Supreme Court First time in history that a court invalidated a law by calling it unconstitutional
Background on John Marshall Born in September 24, 1755  Died in July 6, 1835 Was the Chief Justice in the United States from 1801-1835 Marshall dominated the court for over three decades and played a significant role in developing the American legal system Longest-serving chief justice of the Unites States
Interesting Facts  Marshall had turned down President Washington's requests to be the Attorney General and to serve as Minister to France Marshall and the others were denied the ability to negotiate with France unless they paid a large sum of money and Marshall was sent back home Appointed Secretary of State under Adams  Served as both Chief Justice and Secretary of State for Adams for one month before Adams left office
