List of Reagents for Organic Chemistry Experiment
Isopropyl alcohol: Avoid inhalation as it may cause irritation. Avoid ingestion as it is harmful.
Avoid exposure to fire as it is flammable.
Glycerol: Avoid exposure to fire as it is flammable.
Salicylic acid: Avoid inhalation as it may cause irritation. Avoid ingestion as it is harmful. Avoid
skin contact as it may cause irritation. Avoid exposure to fire as it is flammable.
Ethylene glycol: No hazards known.
Potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7): Avoid inhalation as it may cause severe damage. Avoid
ingestion as it is toxic. Avoid skin contact as it is highly corrosive and may cause severe damage
and even cancer. Avoid exposure to fire as it is flammable. For disposal, acidify with sulfuric
acid, and add sodium thiosulfate and sodium carbonate alternately until completely precipitated.
Dispose the liquid down the sink, and dispose the solid in a metal waste jar.
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4): Avoid inhalation as it may cause severe damage. Avoid ingestion as it
may cause severe damage. Avoid skin contact as it is corrosive and may cause severe burns.
Avoid exposure to permanganates as explosion may occur. For disposal, neutralize with a
carbonate before pouring down the sink.
Potassium permanganate (KMnO4): Avoid ingestion as it is toxic. Avoid skin contact as it is
corrosive and may cause burns. Avoid exposure to acetic acid, formalin, glycerol, hydrochloric
acid, and sulphuric acid as explosion may occur. For disposal, add 1 drop of sulfuric acid, and
add sodium bisulfite until discoloration occurs and any precipitate formed dissolves. Neutralize
with a carbonate, and pour down the sink.
Iron (III) chloride (FeCl3): Avoid inhalation as it may cause irritation. Avoid ingestion as it is
toxic. Avoid skin contact as it may cause burns.
Sodium nitrite (NaNO2): Avoid ingestion and inhalation as it is toxic. Avoid exposure to urea or
fire as explosion may occur. For disposal, add excess ammonia, and acidify to pH 1 with
hydrochloric acid. Neutralize with a bicarbonate or carbonate, and pour down the sink.
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH): Avoid contact with limited amount of water as it may generate heat.
Avoid inhalation as it is harmful. Avoid ingestion as it is harmful. Avoid skin contact as it is
corrosive and may cause burns. For disposal, neutralize with acid before pouring down the sink.
Copper (II) sulfate (CuSO4): Avoid ingestion as it is toxic.
Formalin: Avoid inhalation as it may cause irritation. Avoid ingestion as it is harmful. Avoid
skin contact as it is harmful. Avoid exposure to fire as it is flammable. For disposal, add an
excess of household bleach, stir for 20 minutes, and pour down the sink.
Silver nitrate (AgNO3): Avoid skin contact as it is harmful. Avoid ingestion as it is harmful.
Ammonia (NH3): Avoid skin contact as it is corrosive and may cause burns. Avoid inhalation as
it may cause irritation. Avoid exposure to fire as it may explode. Avoid ingestion as it may cause
severe damage. For disposal, neutralize with acid before pouring down the sink.
Acetic acid (HC2H3O2): Avoid inhalation as it may cause irritation. Avoid ingestion as it may
cause severe damage. Avoid skin contact as it is corrosive and may cause burns. Avoid exposure
to fire as it is flammable. For disposal, neutralize with a hydroxide or carbonate before pouring
down the sink.
Hydrochloric acid (HCl): Avoid inhalation as it may cause irritation. Avoid ingestion as it may
cause severe damage. Avoid skin contact as it is corrosive and may cause burns. For disposal,
neutralize with a bicarbonate or carbonate before pouring down the sink.
Urea: Avoid inhalation as it may cause irritation.
