3. Bellringer
For the first 5 minutes of class
you need to get your things from
the back cabinet and work on
the bellringer on the board.
The bellringer will usually be a
question or exercise about
something we learned during
last class.
4. Crack at a snack!
During the bellringer or right
after, you will sometimes have
an opportunity to win a snack.
I will ask a question about
something we learned last time
and if you remember the answer
you win a snack!
5. New reading strategy
Many students told me in
the survey that they want
to be better readers.
Before reading each day I
will teach you a new
reading strategy we can
practice.
6. Independent Reading
We will continue to read for 15 minutes every
time we have class.
You will need to have a book to read and we
will go to the library to help you find something
that is interesting to you.
You need to record how much you read each
time in your reading log.
I will pull you aside every now and then to see
how your book is going. You will earn points
for talking about your book with me.
7. Writing Journal
During writing journal you need to
keep your pencil moving for 10
minutes.
I will put on music without words if
you are quiet and not talking.
I will write a prompt (an idea) to get
you started just under the bellringer
on the board.
8. Word of the week!
15 minutes
On the first class of the week we will map out the
word of the week.
On the second class of the week we will do an
experiment to learn more about the work.
We will have a word of the week quiz twice during
the quarter and will review all the words of the
week throughout the quarter.
10. What you want to learn about!
I made a list from the survey
you answered and now have a
bunch of things that I know you
want to learn about.
We’ll have a 15 minute lesson
about something new each
time.
11. Homework from other classes
We all want to do better in school.
Sometimes, because we are learning English,
we need a little bit more help to get good
grades in our other classes.
The last 15 minutes of class is for other
homework.
Come prepared with something to work on
from another class every time we meet.
Marta or I can help tutor you in the subject
that you need.
12. Fridays are different
Whenever we have class on a Friday (and it’s
the 3rd class that week) we will do 2 things:
1. Show and Tell
2. Games
Word games to practice vocabulary
Talking games to practice speaking and
social English
13.
14. All district and school policies apply
to my classroom.
What are those even?
15. ―A student is responsible to contribute
positively to the learning in the classroom.‖
– Hillcrest High School Planner p. 11
If you do anything to
stop learning, I will do
something.
16. Responsibilities, p. 17
Students
Show respect for teachers and
classmates by attending class regularly
and on time.
Monitor attendance and grades regularly
using Skyward.
17. Cont. Responsibilities, p. 17
Parents
Monitor student attendance and grades regularly
using Skyward.
Plan medical appointments and vacations at
times which do not interfere with the academic
year when possible.
18. Hall passes
―Hall passes are for emergency use only.
Students are encouraged to take care of personal
issues before or after school, during class breaks
or during lunch.‖ Hillcrest High School Planner
p. 22
Don’t go to the bathroom in my class.
What is something that cannot wait?
Come prepared with materials, water, and
needed snacks.
19. Phone usage
―Students should not be making or accepting
calls or text messages during class time.
Student cell phone usage should not interfere
with the educational process in any way. If a
phone or other electronic device should
disrupt a class (ringing, beeping, etc.), the
device will be confiscated by the teacher
and given to an assistant principle. After
the first offense a parent will have to come to
the office to meet with the student’s assistant
principal to pick up a student’s cell phone.‖
—Hillcrest High School Planner p. 24-25
20. Phone usage
No warning (just this PowerPoint)
I see it, I take it.
I will walk over to your desk and hold my hand
out (even if it’s away by then).
2. If student refuses, class will continue and
referral will be submitted to the administrator
after class.

No warning (just this

I see them, I take them.
1. I will walk over to your
desk and hold my hand
out (even if they’re

2. If student refuses, class
will continue and
referral will be
submitted to the
administrator after
class.
22. Dress Code
―Hats of any kind are not allowed within the
building except as part of an approved activity,
or for religious or medical purposes.‖ –
Hillcrest High School Planner p. 15
HOODS INCLUDED
I will say your name and gesture for you to
remove the hat/hood.
If student refuses, class will continue and
referral will be submitted to the administrator
after class.
23. Why all the referrals?
I’m not going to power struggle with students if
they refuse to follow rules/instructions. It wastes
class time and stops learning.
If it’s happening in my class, it’s happening in
other classes. It helps other teachers and
students out.
I’d rather spend prep time planning fun lessons
than calling parents and meeting with students
after school.
24. What is a referral?
When you choose NOT to follow rules and
instructions, a referral may be filed without me
telling you.
Usually I’ll say your name and ask you to stop,
and if you don’t I’ll just shrug, go on with class,
and file the referral after.
When I fill out a referral for you, an administrator
calls you into their office during that day or the
next.
I might be present for that meeting and your
parent might also be called.
26. Participation
I don’t give you participation points
like Mrs. Freeman because the
Attendance policy should motivate
you enough to get to class.
We also do a lot of classwork that
counts towards your grade so that’s
the real reason you don’t want to
miss.
28. Classroom Behavior
―If a student’s behavior becomes
disruptive to the class…the
teacher will try to resolve any
concerns with individual students
using any or all of the following
[consequences].‖ – p. 11
Define disruptive actions
Out of seat, excessive talking, offtask behavior
29. Getting out of seat
If you have trash at your
desk, hold on to it and throw
it away on your way out of
class.
I’ll try to have interactive
activities everyday, when I
don’t, that’s why we have our
―brain/body break‖ to stretch.
(descanso)
30. Define disrespectful actions
Arguing with instructions
Not following instructions
Disrespectful tone language
Whining
31. Consequences Recap
1. I will say your name, and you
can correct the problem
yourself.
2. I will tell you to correct the
problem specifically.
3. Referral – PTSA conference
33. Bring a pencil!
BRING A PENCIL TO
CLASS EVERYDAY.
If you come to class
without one, you are
responsible for asking a
neighbor or asking me
for a pencil.
You can use my pencil if
you trade me for your
shoe or phone.
You can have them
back when you return
the pencil.
Wework in partners alot and youletdownotherstudentswhenyoudon’t come. No death-bedrepentance. Stayon top of your grades fromthebeginning of theterm.
It’snot my faultifyourparentdoesn’tknowyou’remissingassignments. Theyshouldknowhowto monitor skyward. They signed that when you registered for school at the beginning of the year. Remember that when you ask me to excuse make-up work.
No chance to get it back after class. Don’t ask. I wrap it in paper, with your name, period and assistant principle.
Every once and I while I’ll have you pull them out for something, but I’ll let you know when it’s okay.
I never had discipline problems at Brighton. When you misbehave, they win! Be better than the Bengals. They’re your rivals. Don’t make me miss them—they’re snobs. Now pass out procedures
Alternative: parental contact, see me after school and write an action plan
These are not guidelines, they are real rules. Most of you won't ever face these consequences so I thank you for your maturity and patience but this presentation stands to remind you that rules do exist and they are followed-this is not a pirate ship, I follow through with consequences.
