2. About Your Teacher…
Name: Ms. Benita J. Tandy
Hometown: Austin, TX
Family: Sisters, nieces, nephew
Education: B.A. Psychology
(Millsaps College)
3. Ms.Tandy’s Classroom Expectations
Classroom Procedures
1. When asked to do something, do not complain. Respond by saying "Yes ma'am." Do it
the FIRST time it is asked of you.
2. Do not smack your lips, roll your eyes, or any other disrespectful gestures.
3. If someone in the room is addressing the class, give that person your undivided
attention by looking their way and listening.
4. Avoid rattling paper and making unnecessary noise.
5. Do not get out of your seat without permission.
Exception: If you are turning in an assignment or are physically sick.
6. There is no talking unless:
• You raise your hand, and I call on you.
• I ask you a question, and you are responding.
• It is recess.
• I will instruct you otherwise (for example, during group work)
7. If you win or do well at something, do not brag. If you lose, do not show anger.
Instead, say something like, "I really enjoyed the competition, and I look forward to
playing you again," or "Good game," or don't say anything at all.
8. Be polite and say, "thank you" when given something.
9. At times throughout the year, I will give rewards for good behavior, academic
performances, and other acts worthy of praise. If you ever ask me for a reward,
however, it will not be given. It is rude to ask if you are getting something for good
behavior. You should be good and try your best because you are trying to better
yourself, not because you are anticipating a reward.
10. When I assign homework, there is to be no moaning or complaining. This will result in
a doubled assignment.
11. If I or any other teacher in the school is speaking to or a disciplining a student, do not
look at that student. You wouldn't want others looking at you if you were in trouble or
being reprimanded, so don't look at others in that situation. If you are the student I am
talking to, do not get angry or fuss at students who are looking at you. Let me know
and I will handle the situation.
12.Do not eat food in the classroom unless given permission by me.
13. Keep your desk neat and organized. Throw away any unwanted paper on your way OUT of the classroom.
Show respect for our room by not throwing paper on the floor.
4. 14. If I have to talk to another adult, you are to either continue your work, or remain seated
quietly until we can continue with our lesson.
15. Do not keep any personal items in your desk. I am not responsible for anything lost as
a result of you leaving it in your desk. Write your name on all your materials. I will
not listen to arguments over pencils or any other material if there is no name on them.
16. If any child in the school is bothering you, let me know. I am your teacher, and I am
here to look after you and protect you. I am not going to let anyone in this school bully
you or make you feel uncomfortable. In return, I ask that you not take matters into your
own hands; let me deal with the students.
17. No matter what the circumstances, always be honest. Even if you have done something
wrong, it is best to admit to me, because I will respect that, and oftentimes I will forget
any disciplinary measures because of your honesty.
18. Be the best person you can be! I will work hard for you so I will expect you to work
hard for me.
LUNCHROOM
1. Do not save seats in the lunchroom. Move all the way down to the end of the
row (boys on one side, girls on the other). Do not try to exclude anyone. We are a
family, and we must treat one another with respect and kindness.
2. Students are to read a book entering and exiting the cafeteria.
3. After we eat, we will clean up after ourselves. This includes cleaning off the
tables and making sure we haven't left any trash on the floor or around the eating
area. It is important to be responsible for your trash no matter where you are and
to be sure not to litter.
4. Get everything needed the FIRST time through the line.
5. Follow all school rules. We want to set an example for the rest of the school.
LESSONS/WORK TIME
1. Lesson will begin promptly at the given time. All materials should be ready and
available at this time.
2. The pencil sharpener will only be open during board work time in the morning. It is your
responsibility to sharpen enough pencils for the day during this time.
3. Sit up straight with both legs on the ground. Do not go inside of your desk once the
lesson has begun.
4. Answer on signal the first time. I would rather hear the wrong answer than no answer at
all. Not answering only wastes times and causes the entire class to repeat exercise.
5. Independent work is independent and should be completed quietly in your seat.
6. When participating in centers, remain focused on your given task. Only talk to your
5. group members in a quiet voice. Work should be divided evenly among members and
each member should work cooperatively. When the timer sounds to change centers,
travel to your next center in a quiet and timely manner.
7. Take pride in your work and only turn in your absolute best! I will only accept neatly
written work with the proper heading. Sloppy work will be thrown away and completed
again.
8. If you are turning in work to me, quietly walk to my desk, neatly stack your work, and
quickly return to your desk. Do not bother those working around you nor waste time
walking around the classroom.
9. Once finished with your assignment, you may: finish board work, work from the early
finisher center, or read a book.
SUBSTITUTE/ HALLWAY/ RESTROOM/ ASSEMBLY
1. While you are with a substitute teacher or another teacher at this school, you will obey
the same rules that you follow when I am with you.
2. During an assembly, do not speak and do not look around and try to get the attention of
your friends in other classes. We must uphold an image that shows we have or act
together!
3. When in line, walk single file, two to three feet behind the person in front of you with your arms to your
sides or in your pockets. You should face forward at all times.
4. If we are in the hallway, stand on the correct square (2nd
w/paw print). There will be absolutely no talking
and arms should be folded.
5. We will take two bathroom breaks a day. You will not be allowed to use the restroom at
any other time unless it is an extreme emergency. Flush the toilet when using the
restroom. Do not leave any paper on the restroom floor.
TESTING PROCEDURES IN CLASS
1. Spelling tests are on Thursdays, Vocabulary tests are on Fridays. Reading, Language Arts, Math, and
Science test are giving on Fridays (this does not apply to District and State tests)
2. Scholars will be giving a Test Folder (weekly test) with an answer document (Scan-able or teacher made)
and each test. Scholars will not be seated in groups (to cut down on cheating).
3. If a scholar is caught cheating it is an automatic zero (0/F) as that test grade. It cannot be
retaken.
CONSEQUENCES
Failure to follow these expectations will result in the following consequences:
1. Verbal Warning
2. Clip will be changed (which lower your behavior code for the day and or week)
3. Additional Homework
4. Scholar will not be able to participate in certain school functions (classroom jobs, dances, movies, field
trips, cheerleading, Safety Patrol, Student Council, Fun day, and/or class parties)
6. Dear Parents or Guardians,
WELCOME! I have gone over my expectations for my class with you scholar. Please note that these
expectations and consequences are put in place so that I can ensure that each scholar get the “best”
instruction and every moment possible is spent given our scholars the “best” instruction I can provide. Please
sign below stating that you also have received my expectations for the year as well and fully understand the
expectation and consequences. Please return this page only by your scholar. I look forward to a successful
school year with you and your scholar. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ms. Tandy
