1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
2. In what ways my media product conforms to the
conventions typically seen in social realism films.
• My media product (film opening) uses the forms and conventions of real
media products because: Social realism is our genre, so therefore the
aspects in which we included in our film opening such as location and
costume both personify stereotypical views/beliefs regarding social
realism.
• An example would be Kidulthood which was a huge inspiration and
therefore conforms to this aspect regarding social realism. My media
product develops forms and conventions of real media products
because: Although Kidulthood was a massive influential film for my
group, we made sure that certain aspects such as music was different,
this still representing the genre which is social realism but at the same
time, obtaining originality and making our film stand out and different
from films like Kidulthood regarding the tone, pace and overall sound of
the music featured in our film
3. How we further developed our media product to fit the codes
and conventions typically seen in social realism films
• In my group me and my group members decided to carefully look at costume, location, language, lighting, acting all in depth. For example
when we looked at what clothing to wear we made sure Edona was dressed suitably, we looked at and thoroughly researched what people in
lower income areas of London, (where our film was set) generally wear on a daily basis. We looked at areas like Kilburn, Chalk farm and
Kentish town and added our results and concluded that people generally wear tracksuit
•Also we looked decided to use dim/natural lighting as in most films the enhance the lighting in the post production editing stage and use extra lights for a
better looking more professional holly wood looking finish. My group had no intention of doing this due to the fact this would totally go against the codes
and conventions of our chosen film genre and the look we are trying to create. The dim lighting in the block is very realistic and daunting to show the
spectators the actually reality of the hardship and struggle she lives in, she struggles to open the door as she is carrying shopping bags and on the phone to
her mother trying to avoid freedom and the outside world do to fear she lives in and not knowing any better as less wealthy people are less knowledgeable.
•She is almost multitasking and trying to do all jobs E.g. be good, domestic jobs, and the tougher jobs like carrying shopping which you’d in a better lifestyle
or living condition you would see the husband doing or home delivery or the house keeper taking care of that. This highlights her hardship and magnify’s
the height of her deprivation and fear in this horrible life.
In these shots above we focused on the acing on making Edona look pale hurt and frightened, as Laurent walks in she looks as if she’s seen a ghost and quickly
hinds her phone under the dishes because she’s supposed to be cleaning. She hides the small bit of social interaction she has with the outside world (Her own
mother) from her abusive partner. This was inspired by the film “Sleeping with the enemy” as we crafted Edona’s character in a similar way to Julia Roberts.
The location/setting is also very much stereotypical of a lower class flat in London as its small, cramped and shows unfit living conditions.
4. How my products may be seen as challenging the
conventions of a real media product.
• It could be said that my media product did in fact also
challenge forms and conventions of real media products
because:-stereotypically in films like 'LONDON TO
BRIGHTON', the location is very dirty and of a very low social
status, however it is evident that minor issues such as the
kitchen scene doesn't show too much of a low social class
due to the scene of the kitchen which physically isn’t dirty
and low status enough, however to still provoke the sense of
deprivation and low social class, me and my group made
sure we used factors such as props, costumes to convey this
and portray social realism.
