The document summarizes editing logs from multiple sessions working on a documentary project. It describes uploading footage, organizing clips, receiving guidance from an expert editor who suggested changes to better focus the opening, and details adding music and adjusting sound levels. Fades were also added to the opening and ending to polish the overall edit.
1. Editing log – 06/01/14
Today, I uploaded the footage to the editing software Final Cut Pro
by connecting the camera to the iMac through USB.
After all the clips were uploaded, I then began to create bins to
organise all the footage and keep track of where things are and what
is needed for the sequence. The chosen clips for the opening were
dragged onto the timeline, mistakes or shaky camera movement
were trimmed from the footage if needed.

In the session today, Nick from Chocolate Films came in to help guide
our group with editing the footage, which I found very helpful
because of his advice. When he viewed the opening to the sequence
he suggested we should change it and focus more on the subject of
the documentary, so we did this by going straight into the voice-over
of the information on the Lewis Chessmen. We re-arranged the clips
and made it look more like a real documentary by cutting out the bits
that were irrelevant and used Nick’s suggestion.
After we completed the opening, Nick synced the audio and footage
together of the shots we collected from the museum, which was
created, by camera and a boom mic. By doing this, it gave the
sequence a better quality sound and made it a lot more professional.
Overall, I think Nick was a good influence for our documentary
because he gave us a better sense of direction.

In today’s lesson I focused on inserting the music created for the
documentary into the timeline. Doing this was easy, however I had to
adjust the sound levels on different parts of the sequence, which was
tricky. This involved using the cutting tool to cut the sound into small
clips and use the different clips to match the sound of the
documentary. For example, on the opening when there are just shots
of the museum the music is quite loud, but when the person starts to
speak the sound is dimmed low so you can still hear it but mainly
allows the viewer to focus more on what the person is saying.
The music is very effective because it makes the chessmen seem
mysterious which is good because no one fully understands their
origin.

We are now close to finishing the documentary and I have decided to
add some fades on specifically the opening and ending of the
sequence to make it seem more like a professional edit.
I completed this by dragging the fade tool onto the clips I chose the
effect for. When this was done I adjusted how long I wanted the
effect to last and make it appropriate for the documentary.
