Dawn of the dead film opening analysis (Amad)
1.
2. At the beginning, after each title appears, footage of zombies follow and cross cut
back in to titles, this constantly happens for the first 35 seconds of the opening.
The footage used of the zombies during this time seem to be archival footage.
During this time, only glimpses of zombies are shown to create tension for the
viewers.
The pace of editing starts off at a normal, but as soon as the fast and upbeat music
plays, the editing immediately picks up the pace and keeps up with the sound of
the guitar. As the upbeat music is playing the use of archival footage gives the
audience an idea of what to expect during the film. The archival footage shown is
mostly of people being attacked and the chaos which the zombies are creating
for the civilians, police and the military.
The upbeat music which plays for most parts of the opening does not at all match
with what is actually being shown. For instance people being killed by zombies,
whilst happy upbeat music is being played does not match. You’d expect to have
much more serious and mysterious music being played rather then upbeat music.
The music being played is therefore contrapuntal sound as the sound does not
match what is being shown.
3. The titles reflect on the narrative as it
identifies to the viewers that the film is about
an outbreak of zombies. The theme of the
film is pretty obvious as most zombie films
are about a group of humans trying to
survive. The titles are used as blood, this
foreshadows that there will be a lot of deaths
in the film.
4. The brief moment showing people praying is
iconic as it shows that they’re looking to god
for answers and help.
The violence in the footage is also iconic as
things like riots taking place are common in
zombie films.
The different news reports are iconic as it
highlights and broadcasts the disasters.
5. The film contains many enigma codes for example:
How did the infection start & also when did it
start?
Are the infected dead or alive?
How many people are alive and well?
Is there any hope for those who have avoided
the virus so far?
Why are there riots going on?
6. A film about a virus which has spread across
the country, a group of uninfected try their
best to survive.
