1. Conventions of Television News
Conventions of Television News are:
• Archival footage because a film or video footage that can be used in other films.
• Interviews because they can give more information about what it’s linked to the story and
they give statistics about it.
• L cuts over visuals because it’s a split edit, and edit transition from one shot to another in
film or video and picture.
• Titles to tell us names because it tells who the presenter is and who other presenters are
and give names of people coming to talk about the story they are linked with.
• Music at the beginning – serious, strident, forceful, official because it gives an introduction
about how it starts and what headlines are serious and top stories.
• Ident – world, colour coding of BBC, names of cities because it stands-out and makes its
more clear to see it and read as well.
• Seeing the newsroom behind which tells you what the television news like and how they
present it to the world and how it's organise.
• Photos – slow zooms because it gives an idea of what the photos look and what happens and
linked with the story.
• Rack focus because it makes the television production in the practice of changing the focus
of the lens during a shot.
• Anonymising faces etc because it’s a repeat of the presenter faces and show what the job is
and they are important to the television news.
• Form: TV news bulletin
• Structure: Headlines, news reports, sport, weather
• Content: Current affairs
• Technical conventions: Codes and conventions
• Mode of address: Formal, serious, informative (Commercial tv news a bit less formal) Tries
