2. Purpose and Audience
The director of this film is Teddy Nygh, it was filmed in 2016 in London UK. This short film has a clear
purpose to relate to what happens in the youth today. At the end of the film there is a statistic that
gives figures about knife crime in the UK, this shows that this film is trying to raise awareness for
this. It aims to give a message and educate people on things that can be easily ignored. It shows
that actions have consequences, the film shows this in a very good way as the main character ends
up feeling responsible for everything that happened.
The audience for this film would be mainly the younger generation, about 13-26 as it doesn’t just
apply to teenagers but young adults as well. The film’s uploaded to YouTube which will also
reinforce that younger demographic as YouTube is used more by young people.
3. Genre
Short/Drama- The film has a big impact as it shows that everyone gets hurt in the
process of a crime. This genre can be quite challenging as an emotional narratives
important. Films like Fight Club and Forest Gump are dramas and have a powerful
storyline. Action films can be interesting due to the fast pacing or violence,
although dramas tend to have violence they focus on the storyline. The opening
scene of the film makes it obvious that it’s a drama as there is conflict in a
conversation that five characters are involved in.
Form and Style
The camera that was used to film this film was a DSLR, this is normal as short films
have lower budgets or even no budget at all. This is film has a very similar style to
short films like, Drawn Out and Rapman Shiro’s Story. Drawn Out is produced by the
same YouTube channel, MYM. Shiro’s Story has the same Actor playing the main
character. They would all have a very similar audience due to the general nature of
the storyline. There are a lot of genre conventions in this short film, it includes a
knife which is a common convention of an action or a thriller film. This film also
includes a meeting in which the main character passes on his message to others
this is a convention of the drama genre, this kind of scene has appeared in many
films and TV shows like Breaking Bad and House of Cards.
4. Target Audience
The audience ties in with the message of the film as its trying to raise
awareness for knife crime in the youth of the UK, therefore the target
audience would be people aged from 13-26, as the story includes a
clear message both male and female viewers would have been thought
about as they are exploring an issue that can effect a lot of people. This
film has a wider audience and would cover all areas of the NRS Scale
due to its further meaning, From A (Upper middle class) though too E
(Those at lowest level of subsistence). In the 4c’s model the main
audience would be The Mainstream due to the nature how YouTube
works, being the largest group out of all of them this is usually a good
audience for making money or as this film is, trying to get a message
across.
5. Frequency and Production Process
• This short film is a standalone project that was made possible by a
collaboration between MYM: Million Youth Media and Fully Focused.
• The should film would have gone through the writing and planning
stages before casting an producing would have taken place. After
casting the film they would have make sure the actors could do the
dates that they set and then filming would take place when
everything had been sorted. After filing the marketing and editing
stage needs to be completed and once the film has been fully edited
and advertised they can release it to public viewing.
6. Content and Meaning
• The Opening Shots show what life in London is stereotypically like, then there is a shot of
someone from behind with people in front of him. This suggests that the “faceless” character will
relate and be important in the story.
• When the film opens an immediate relationship is established between the 2 leads, Miles and
Kadz. There friend is immediately questioned by another 2 characters that seem to be picking on
Miles, this is an important scene for the film as it establishes the characters and we instantly feel
sorry for the lead, Miles.
• We get a few shot shots of Miles moving around London to get to his Job.
• When he gets to his Job his Dad is quickly in shot and in Miles’ face. The use of the over the
shoulder view makes it seem more intense as you can see how close they’re stood to each other.
A few shots of his work then play to give the audience knowledge of what the character is doing.
• In the next shot we get the two people who were being rude to miles, a car then enters the shot
from left to right and turn towards the shot to get alongside the 2 characters as the car enters the
shot the camera slightly tracks it to the right.
7. • After this scene the car drives out of the shot then the camera goes up closer to the boys talking.
• After this the next shot then goes back to an interruption in the story, it goes back to the same shot
that opened the film, from the back of this unknown character. We get a close up on one of the people
listening. He seems to be paying attention after hearing something that could relate to him or an
experience. This charter could be trying to provoke the same reaction from the audience to raise more
awareness.
• We get a shot through the glass window of the food shop and we can see the reflecting of cars and the
street. Then we get the two characters Miles and Kadz’ girlfriend walking around a corner, we see the
girlfriend face drop and starts to look worried. This builds suspense as the audience don’t know what
will happen even though the characters have already reacted. Next shot reveals it’s the same guy from
earlier. We then see Kadz in the background, he sees what's happening and then runs away, this will
anger the audience as he's betrayed his friend. Next shot we see Miles notice Kadz running away.
• Just before Miles gets hit there is an intense background noise to make the scene seem more intense.
• We then get aggressive music that relates to the emotion of the main character miles, as he walks
down a street. Same music plays through Miles solo scene, we see him have an argument with himself,
the shots used in this scene sways side to side to make it seem more energetic.
• In a short scene miles takes a knife, as we see miles look down the camera moves so the audience can
see what he’s looking at. We get a small montage as Miles walks around, the montage includes all the
recent events that have driven Miles to use the knife.
• The next shot sees Miles walking away from the camera and in the distance we can see a blurry figure,
we realise its Kadz when he starts calling for miles. When he turns to speak to Kadz the camera follows
his movements until both Miles and Kadz are in the shot.
8. • Throughout this whole scene there is a muffled sound in the background that makes the scene
feel more intense, then when Miles takes out the knife this sound gets louder making the
audience feel more tense.
• While they argue a sound of a car pulling up is in the distance, as the sound plays out we see Kadz
look over and panic. We get a shot of the man that hit Miles getting out of his car and confronting
Miles again.
• As Kadz saves Miles the man pushes him against the wall, after a few seconds Miles realises
what's happened and the cameras follows him to the ground, we then get a shot of Kadz in a lot
of pain. A very sombre song fades in as we see the knife stabbed into Kadz, this music will make
the audience more emotional. The sound of the scene then fades out and the music takes over as
we get a slow motion shot of Miles trying to help his friend.
• This shot shows that the unknown person that was sharing the story was Miles. As we hear about
the fate of Kadz the camera only reveals his head and shoulders, when Miles explains what
happened the camera pans out so that we can see how serious his injurie effected him.
