2. A clear idea for our film
• Our film is related to first world problems that occur day in day out in
young peoples lives in the 21st century, more than we actually think. The
idea sprung from the massive increase of suicide in the recent years. Our
main idea is about a young teenaged boy aged around 16 years old who
has problems not only at home but at school also. However our main
focus point is to show that suicide is not always the answer in the sense
that we are going to use the sliding doors affect to show the different
outcomes of the same young boy when he takes 2 completely different
approaches. For example one clip of our film will show him taking the
tough approach and fighting back and on the other side him taking the
more passive more laid back approach which in the end not only is the
best option to pick in this scenario but also is the scenario which leads
him to ultimately stay alive at the end of the 5 minute film.
4. Positive
The positive issues we as a group are trying to
portray is that suicide is not always the way, and
essentially there are other ways through certain
severe situations; for example calling helplines like
Child line to help youngsters through hard times.
5. Negatives
• The negative issues we are addressing that can be
seen as controversial also is the fact that we do show
one of the outcomes with a teenager unfortunately
dying. This can be seen as a negative as some people
from our primary audience may feel disturbed etc.
However because these issues do occur in everyday
life we feel it is good to address them, and know this
is the perfect way to without getting a bad light
portrayed on ourselves and the film
6. Stereotypical
One of the stereotypical issues we address is the
concept of bullying. The whole ideology that young
people get bullied and then end up giving their life is
shown in many films as its seen as ‘stereotypical’ – the
norm almost. One other stereotypical aspect we took
is to use a working class boy to emphasis what
happens in non private schools, and that ‘poorer’
children tend to get bullied more.
7. Hegemonic
We used a boy as the main character as we feel especially
in our society boys (men) are seen as the dominant, ruling
class – ‘hegemonic’ almost. We feel boys although are
normally not victims of bullying its mostly catty girls who
are involved with that, we did not want to portray a full
stereotypical idea. Also used a boy from a black
background as in our society black boys are seen as
dominant so in a way is weird to see a young black boy get
bullied to a point where he commits suicide.
8. Pluralistic
• One final representation we looked at was the pluralistic one.
Connecting this to gender, ethnicity age and class we show how
young people although claimed to be in this ‘single’ mono society
together, and almost further apart than we actually think. This
however is not only due to class, gender etc. although are main
factors; can merely also come down to the little things, for
example: jealousy and rivalry between young individuals in this
competitive world and corrupted society we live in.
11. The source of idea for the poster came from previous
movies of similar genre as seen in the slides above which
feature films like; Sliding doors, Run Lola Run and
Melinda & Melinda.
These posters all seem to have two to three different
parts to it and this can be said to have been done so it is
able to mirror the two different kind of lives and possible
outcomes for the character.
12. Also the posters all seem to have simple layouts and this was
done so it could sort of divert the idea of the movie being
complicated as the whole idea of the sliding door effect is in
some way already complicated enough for the audience and
so therefore the simpler the poster turns out the more likely
it is to attract the audience which is the primary aim of the
poster.
By paying close attention to little details such as this we
hope to incorporate these effects into our poster to make it
conventional for the genre to which it falls into.
13. Narrative Structure
Equilibrium: The equilibrium in our movie is typical to
films of this genre. By doing this we have been able to
conform with the convention of the typical genre. The
equilibrium of our movie has the main character facing
personal problems and this is made known to the
audience using the montage effect. This carries on until
the eventual scene where the character faces a bullying
incident in school.
14. Disruption: The disruption comes in where the character
get pushed to the floor by a bully. At this point the
sliding doors effect is introduced as the two different
approaches to the situation is shown using the effect.
And this carries and leads on to so many other life
situation of the character which happen to be dependent
on the action he takes at the point of getting bullied.
15. New-Equilibrium: The new equilibrium is introduced
when the character eventually ends up in similar
situations following the actions taken during the bullying
incident.
17. Target Audience.
• Our target audience ...
• Will be between the AGE of 16-18, this is because
the main character is a college student, therefore
UK college students watching this could relate what
the character is going through.
• GENDER will be males because the main character
is male therefore the audience could relate. Also
because these situations stereotypically happen to
females, but we are trying to show the audience
that it also happens to males.
18. Target Audience.
• Our target audience ...
• ETHNICITY will be Afro-Caribbean, this is because the main
character will be of this ethnicity, so the target audience will
have something to relate to.
• GEO-DEMOGRAPHICS will mostly be in the city e.g. London, as
this here the film is based, also the problems the main
character is facing is partly due to his are, therefore target
audience can relate
• Will be part of the SOCIO-ECONOMIC grade E. This because all
college students are in the socio economic grade E, as they do
not have high paying jobs.
19. Profile of our film
• The genre of our film is: DRAMA
•
• Characters: we have one main character that is going to be playing the role of
the two different people. One is the good version and good turn of events and
the other is the bad.
•
• Themes: the themes of our film is the in depth reality of everyday life, and
someone who is dealing with problems of everyday life but are handling them in
different ways. For example, in the first scenario (A) it would be handled in the
worst way possible with bad outcomes, whereas in the second scenario (b) the
same problem will be handled in a better way.
•
20. • The themes we have are:
• Moral dilemmas
• Violence
• Bullying/harassment
•
• Our story is about a boy who goes through problems in his life, and we show how there is a
different solution to each thing he goes through. We split this character into two different
people that has the same problem but deals with it differently. So for example, for the first
problem, he gets bullied. We see that in one reality he retaliates and hits the person back,
but in the second reality he just sits there and gets beaten without doing anything to protect
himself. So it’s simply a film to bring awareness of the fact that actions lead to consequences
that can lead to even bigger things
•
21. • Similar films: a similar film to ours would be ‘SLIDING DOORS’ which
is a 1998 British-American romantic comedy-drama film. It is the film
that gave us the influence to make ours. We are reinforcing the idea
of the two different scenarios as that’s what happens in this film. It
influenced us to make our film similar to this.
22. Cinematography
• Cinematography:
• Shots and camera angles:
• Arc shot: when being bullied we will circle the character
• Close up: to show facial expressions and show important events
• Long shot: while characters are walking
• Medium close up
23. • Mis-en-scene:
• Location: it will be outside and in the studio
• Setting: school, home, outside, park etc.
• Props: we will be using props such as the item which he kills himself with
• Lighting: high key during scenes, but low key at the end to create suspense
• Costume: everyday clothes as this is a representation of everyday scenarios and problems
• Sound: non-diegetic sounds such as
• Hitting
• Parents shouting
• Diegetic sounds such as:
• Shouting on screen
