2. Blumler & Katz – Users & Gratification Theory
The Users and Gratification Theory is a concept which tries to understand
why consumers need the media for certain needs. It presents that the
audience are not passive consumers of media but actually have power over
what they see or hear in the media and have an active role in interpreting
and applying media in to their own lives. Blumler and Katz suggested that
media is used for the following;
• Diversion
• Social Interaction
• Personal Identity
• Surveillance
• Entertainment
3. In my music magazine I attracted my audience mainly
by the articles in my cover lines and contents page.
However I also addressed hip-hop and rap fans by
using the image on the front cover to represent the
genre and also the font of my masthead and text
throughout the magazine.
4. The articles and cover lines I chose were decided
based on the most popular parts of the hip-hop
and rap genre. For example I used big names in
the genre on my front cover to attract fans of
those rappers and hopefully make them want to
read more about them and want to buy the
magazine.
5. • I also used the image on the front cover to attract my audience as on
the image the artist seems to look angry which represents the
stereotypical view of the genre of my music magazine. When
choosing between each of the artist to put on my music magazine I
felt that to attract my audience I had to put more stereotypical image
on the front cover as I felt it would be more attractive to my desired
audience.
