EDM magazine genre
audience analysis
There are a few Electronic Dance Music
magazines, such as mixmag, djmag and trap
magazine. There are many representations
within these magazines, some positive, some
negative. Within these magazines there is a
social group which is represented, a group
that like going out to clubs and raves and
staying up late. They like to spend their
money on music, the latest phones, nights out
and clothes.
In
these
magazines
there
is
acknowledgement of a raving, drug taking
stereotype. Obviously this is a huge
assumption as not everyone that likes/listens
to electronic dance music does drugs and I’m
Month Day Year
sure many people are greatly offended by this
statement as they may not be the drug user
some would have you believe. However,
drugs are a huge part of the EDM scene as
many EDM subgenres were practically built
on drug use and although not everyone does
drugs, a huge percentage of people who
attend the raves and sets participate in the
use of drugs.
The style of writing within these magazines is
very informal, as if it were a friend talking to
you. This is because they have a young
target audience (16-30) which would most
likely get bored if it was too formal. It is also
because the subject, music, is extremely
informal as it is about enjoying it, not about
looking intelligent or clever; it is all about
having fun.
There is definitely more of a male presence,
although not strictly. The magazines are
usually set out in a masculine manor using
masculine colours and designs, but it is not a
‘men’s’ magazine in the way it doesn’t push
away females. It is solely for people who
enjoy EDM and it just so happens that the
majority are men.
Front cover analysis
The front covers usually consist of producers that
help capture the attention of consumers, because
they will most likely know who the person on the
cover is as they will follow that kind of music. It

previously bought the magazine until they heard
that their favorite artist was featured in it.
Occasionally (particularly in summer) the covers
will have images of women on them to attract the
male target audience. They also usually have
names of other producers that are featured in the
issue in order to target a wider range of people.
