The slide show gives a brief about one of the critical environmental issue of Pakistan; deforestation, what are its causes, its ramifications, and what have been done so far.
Yet, a lot more extensive efforts are needed to increase the tree cover of the country in order to reduce the impacts of deforestation.
2. INTRODUCTION
DEFORESTATION Removal of trees to convert land into farms, ranches, or for urban
uses.
โข Forests still cover about 30% of Worldโs land but half the size of England is lost each year.
โข Since 1990s Pakistan lost 14.7% of its forests and woodland habitat.
โข According to Pakistan Today the deforestation rate in Pakistan is highest in the world.

7. INIATIVES TO PROTECT FORESTS
๏ง REDD+
๏ง Green Pakistan Program
๏ง South Punjab Forest Company
๏ง Billion Tree Tsunami Project
8. REDD+
๏ง It is a United Nation program that rewards governments, companies, and forest
owners in the global south for keeping their forests alive and healthy.
๏ง By 2020 it is introducing result-based payments to forest communities for their
efforts in protecting trees.
๏ง Pakistan won a grant of US $ 3.8 million from Forest Carbon Partnership Facility for
forest protection.
9. GREEN PAKISTAN PROGRAME
๏ง Ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif announced this program
worth Rs. 3.7 billion on February 9, 2017 that aim to plant 100
million trees all over the country.
๏ง This will help improve forest cover as well as contribute to
meet domestic demand for wood sustainability.
๏ง Government is further implementing the Sustainable Forest
Management and Sustainable Land Management projects to
contribute to the cause.

10. SOUTH PUNJAB FOREST COMPANY
๏ง Government of Punjab established the company to reduce dependence on natural
forests for fuelwood and other purposes.
๏ง The aim is to promote forestry investment across 6 districts of Punjab.
๏ง Company will lease forest land for 15 years to raise plantations that can fulfil the
needs of wood-based industry, creating jobs, reduce import bills and halt logging
pressure on natural forests.
11. BILLION TREE TSUNAMI PROJECT
๏ง KPK Government initiated this program to increase forest cover
in province and plant 1 billion trees by this yearโs end.
๏ง So far planted around 750 million trees.
๏ง It is recognized as 4th biggest initiative in the world of
afforestation
๏ง The projected new-tree cover area tends to 2% of KPKโs total
area.
๏ง It also increased job opportunities to 5lac people.
๏ง It will help to adapt extreme climate changes as well.

12. Between 2001 and 2015, 2.08Mt of carbon dioxide was released
into the atmosphere as a result of tree cover loss in Pakistan.

13. PLANT A TREE EVEN IF IT IS YOUR LAST DEED
Anas (R.A) reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said,
โIf the Hour (the day of Resurrection) is about to be established and one of you
was holding a palm shoot, let him take advantage of even one second before the
Hour is established to plant it.โ
(Authenticated by Al-Albani)
At another place it is reported that Prophet (PBUH) said,
โPlanting a tree is (an act of) continuous charity.โ
