HANNA PARTNER EPICENTER:
WHERE BOYS CAN BE BOYS
SPRING 2018
“They have a couple of hours to immerse
themselves in three things boys love:
video games, competition, and hanging
out with their friends,” explains Lisa
Alexander, public and community
relations director at Epicenter Sports and
Entertainment in Santa Rosa, referring to
Epicenter’s new community partnership
with Hanna Boys Center.
It all started last spring, when Hanna
reached out to Epicenter, hoping to
teenage boys in our care. The North Bay’s
food, and fun responded by offering
Hanna an in-kind donation through its
philanthropic arm, the Goals Foundation,
which enjoys a close relationship
with Santa Rosa Recreation and Parks
Neighborhood Services Division.
What sealed the deal for Alexander, who
previously served as marketing and
communications director at Chop’s Teen
Club, was a summer golf-cart tour, led
by Hanna Boy Trent and staff members
Christy Kenyon and Kathryn Perry.
“Trent is an outstanding young man—so
mature and such a cheerleader for Hanna.
It was quite clear from our conversations
that his life had vastly improved as a
result of being there. The boys are held to
high standards by caring staff who want
nothing more than to see them thrive,”
says Alexander, who, in a handwritten note,
lauded Trent’s “zest for life, connection
with [Hanna] peers and staff, and obvious
drive for success.”
Under staff member David Montano’s
supervision, 12 boys at a time may visit
Epicenter up to 20 times per calendar

2. I’ve always been my own advocate. I
applied to Hanna and set up my own
interviews without my mom even
knowing. I really needed to come here,
or I knew I was doomed. My life at
home was going nowhere. My mom’s
a single mom and she argued with me
best thing, and after meeting everyone
here, she agreed to let me come. That
was three years ago. I was 14.
I still don’t like school that much, but
it’s a lot better here at Hanna. My
grades have increased so much. My
teachers don’t have 30 other students
to worry about, so they can pay
attention to me.
My favorite teacher is Mr. Borchelt, for
math. He tells me I can do it. He makes
my stuff and knows how to motivate
me. But best of all, he’s always open
and honest with me. I really appreciate
when adults are like that.
Something I really like is that the staff
doesn’t treat us all the same. Hanna
accepts who you are and helps you
make your own path. I’m into music
and electronics, and I’m trying to start
a digital lab here where kids can create
rap and make YouTube movies. I love
baseball, too. In my freshman year, I
Dr. Burke Harris, a nationally acclaimed

of the Center for Youth Wellness,
treats the effects of early childhood
trauma and adversity. She has recently
published a new book on the subject,
The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-
Term Effects of Childhood Adversity.
Dr. Burke Harris’s comments on the
and treatment of the effects of
childhood trauma (also known as
adverse childhood experiences, or
ACEs) resonated strongly with the
audience of more than 150 health,
education, social services, and
government professionals, many of
whom serve young people who have
experienced multiple ACEs. Dr. Burke

is because it just gives me a great

that smell of the fresh-cut grass on
One thing that helps me a lot here is
my faith. I’m in a youth group in my
church at home, and here at Hanna
I serve in the chapel every Sunday. I
know that God is helping me in a lot of
ways, and Hanna is proof of that. Not
everyone here is into this, but for me
it’s really helped.
I’m glad I pushed so hard to come
to Hanna. I’m 17 now and have a
pretty good idea what would have
happened to me if I hadn’t come here.
I would have dropped out of school
for sure, because I hated it. I’d still be
smoking or into drugs. My mom and
grandparents would be disappointed
in me. I might even be in jail like some
of my friends at home.
I admit it—I’m kind of spoiled here. I
get so much support. Everyone cares
about me and is working hard to make
sure I’m successful. But I’m really
grateful. And I’m going to use what I’m
learning here to make a real difference
in the world.

multiple ACEs on the health of
children: “Twenty years of medical
research has shown that childhood
adversity literally gets under our skin,
changing people in ways that can
endure in their bodies for decades.
It can tip a child’s developmental
trajectory and affect physiology, and
it can dramatically increase the risk
for heart disease, stroke, cancer,
diabetes—even Alzheimer’s,” said
Dr. Burke Harris. “Yet by screening
for and treating trauma at an early
age, we have a better chance of
preventing future illness by treating
the underlying problem: a damaged
stress-response system.”
Like the Center for Youth Wellness,
Hanna Institute is also committed
to helping young people recover
from the effects of childhood trauma Archbishop Hanna High School principal
Dennis Crandall announced that he’s
stepping aside this summer to play a more
active role in Hanna’s development effort. “I
have poured my heart and soul into our school
these past dozen years, and it will always be
near and dear to me,” Crandall said. “But I
feel now is the right time for me to step back
about returning to my fundraising roots and
helping the Center prepare for a major capital
campaign that will completely revamp the
entire school and dining facilities.” A search for
a new principal has already begun.
Hanna recently named Dr. Stefanie Smith as its

Beginning April 2, James Thompson

stepped down as Hanna’s admissions
director. In this critical role, Thompson
will be responsible for all recruiting,

coming to Hanna Boys Center, Thompson
held a number of roles at the East Bay
Agency for Children in Oakland, CA,
providing counseling to at-risk children
