As the original video for the song I chose to create a
video for, I saw this as a perfect source of inspiration
The editing of this was a particular aspect that I
wanted to incorporate within my video; Muller cuts the
music on the beat a large majority of the time in a
successful attempt to blend the video into the song. In
addition to this, Muller also uses time manipulation
throughout the video. A combination of both fast paced
and slowed down shots help to keep the video
progressing as well as interesting. Within my own
video, I too would like to experiment with the pace of
the shots. Also, in a few sequences, Muller introduces
montages in order to communicate a series of shots
within a short space of time. This works to build the
element of nostalgia and thus is also something I’d like
to communicate within my work.

My primary inspiration that I gained from this video
was its conceptual nature.
As the protagonist travels from location to location,
there is no inherently obvious narrative
As a result of this, the video’s narrative becomes
subjective and it becomes up to the audience to construct
their own view and structure for it based on how they
perceive the video. This is an extremely postmodern
aspect of HDIYL- the lack of a metanarrative is a crucial
element of postmodernism.
4. Letterbox
Format:

A feature prominent in many music videos is the letterbox
format of the video. Many videos (including,
Unforgettable (French Montana ft Swae Lee), Loyalty
(Kendrick Lamar ft Rihanna), Bad At Love (Halsey))
feature the distinctive black ‘strips’ at the top and bottom
of the screen.
These encourage a widescreen display similar to those
used within the film industry.
As a result, many videos now use the same formatting for
various reasons. The more dominant reasons being for
being able to crop the shots but also to achieve a more
cinematic look overall.
I particularly like the cinematic look given to the video
when this aspect ratio is used. This hybrid of industries is
a postmodern approach to videos and can also be
considered an element of pastiche as it is used in many
occasions
5. London:
City
The English capital also served as a specific point of
inspiration due to the vast range of locations and
architecture available on our doorstep.
Within my video, I want to show a range of locations
that the city has to offer- aside from the typical sets
featured (i.e. Tower Bridge, London Eye, Big Ben etc).
This is why I’ve chosen to shoot my footage around the
Tate Modern, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Millennium
Bridge.
As Birdy’s Wings gave me the inspiration to include
montages within the sequence, I’d like to use the
London as a backdrop and use a variety of shots to
show a range of recognisable but different scenes.
