How effective is the combination
of your main product and
ancillary texts?
Promotional campaign
 The double-page spread and adverting I created
are the two things used to support and promote
my TV documentary “From China to Edmundia”.
They are taking part of the marketing.
 Marketing is communicating the value of a
product, service or brand to customers, for the
purpose of promoting or selling that product,
service, or brand.
 Advertising is one of the method used in
marketing. It an effective promotional campaign.
It is now taking part of everything. All products
need to be advertised in order to sell to the
customers.
 For promote media products, synergy and cross-
media convergence are the two things people
are using the most in this digital age.
What makes an effective
promotional campaign?
 Know your audience and keep the content relevant
The first thing we should always do before promote any products is targeting the right
audiences. “From China to Edmundia” is a travel lifestyle documentary. So the people
who are interested in those two genres should be targeted. In addition, “From China
to Edmundia” is mainly talking about an international student’s life in a boarding
school in UK and her own hometown-Beijing,China. People who interested in different
national cultures and environments, and also have the similar experiences are suited
to target. Then the next step is look for a particular age group. Documentaries are
generally watched by adults instead of young age people therefore I set the range of
my target audience from 18-30. So my promotional campaigns should be suitable for
this age group.
 Creativity
The ideas of editing the products is also important. With the development of society,
people’s opinions are growing together, so the style of the promotional campaign will
attract to the audiences mostly. What I mean by “Style” is I should mix “novelty” and
“traditional” together into promotional campaign .Not only showing the first mentioned
of two, but also the latter.
 Feedback
Often update the audience’s suggestions will be very helpful on marketing because
the whole point of this process is trying to make the audiences become interested in
my products. I then can have the right direction on what the promotional campaigns I
should create.
The combination of my
documentary and two ancillary
texts Apart from the documentary I have created, I have also made two ancillary texts in order
to show my ability of creating other media format products, therefore I decided to make a
double-page spread on a magazine and newspaper advertisement from the choices of
exam board.
 The two ancillary texts are both used to promote the documentary. For example, people
who are interested in TV shows and films will buy Radio Times in order to get the new
information. So the double-page spread on the magazine is a way to make people know
about my documentary. Radio Times is mainly introduced directors , behind screen stories
or something relate to the films or TV shows.
 By using my products as examples, for the double-spread sheet, I tried to pretend the
magazine had an interview with me as a BBC TV documentary director. In the interview I
have shared my ideas of how I create the story and some behind screen stories.
 The whole point of these two ancillary texts used to promote “From China to Edmundia” in
order to make more people know about my documentary from different places, such as
magazines and newspaper.
Synergy & Cross-
media
convergence
 Cross-media convergence is technology that allows an audience to consume
more than one type of media from a single platform. Lots of aspects of the internet
e.g. social networking, YouTube, online editions of newspapers and magazines.
 Synergy is the term used to describe a situation where different entities cooperate
advantageously for a final outcome. It’s the ‘strategy of synchronising and actively
forging connections between directly related areas of entertainment.
 New media is now fully supporting them.
 They are important for my documentary because they are taking parts of
production, distribution, marketing and exhibition of my documentary.
 I have uploaded my documentary onto YouTube therefore audiences can watch it
online whenever they want. Furthermore, the advertising I created for newspaper
can also upload online, so that people can notice my documentary while they are
looking at the advertising.
 In short, I can attract many more audiences if I use them to promote my
documentary.
New media
 In term of new media, it is related to the old media. Old media, such as films,
magazines and newspaper. Furthermore, new media is the content available on-
demand through the new technologies and internet.
 Internet is important because people are getting most information from there. It
can help us solve many problems, such as online shopping, emails.
 Internet becomes our necessities and we need to use it everyday. It is also a way
to let people communicate with each other all over the world.
 Media studies and Internet cannot be separated. Most media platforms are
created by digital technologies and promoted by Internet. For example, I have
used cameras in order to filming, Final Cut Pro to edit my documentary and
InDesign to design the ancillary texts. It is important to use digital technology and
different media platforms because they can help me to represent my products in a
much more better way. They are never hard to learn and use for people who born
in the new generation and even some old age people.
Double-page spread
 Double-page spread is one of the ancillary texts I have produced which use to relate to my
documentary “From China to Edmundia” .
 I have used my own picture in order to link with the lifestyle genre. The text I wrote on the right
hand page is an interview with me as an BBC documentary director. It contains the information
how I come up with these ideas, the relationship between UK and other countries, the trend of
future British education and some behind screen stories.
 I have used many light colours to make the contents not seem to be very boring in a
psychological way. In addition, I used bold and bigger size font on the masthead and the
headline to make the key words stand out therefore readers can know what the contents about
by read through them.
Advertising
 I created an newspaper advertisement in order to promote my
documentary.
 Through my research, most adverts for TV documentaries are
designed on a landscape page therefore I used this convention. This
page includes the title, date of release and channel of release. Apart
from them, I have also added a quote which is related to the genres
of my documentary.
 I have used Photoshop to the colour “China” and “Edmundia” with
their own flags.
