WINDOWS
Window is a graphical user
interface(GUI). It shows you various
programs and subprograms in the form of
menus and windows.
Example : Windows-95/98/2000/ME/XP
are the popular GUI’s.
 Window is multiple user i.e. we can open
more than one application or document at a
time.
 Windows is a graphical user interface
(GUI). here you can draw pictures and copy
to any other application without any
change.
ADVANTAGES OF WINDOWS
 Dynamic data exchange (DDE). Here we
can transfer the data or a part of it to any
application or document without any change
so the data is exchanged very quickly.
Ex:- Cut copy any particular document and
paste into some other place.
 Window is a mouse driven.
Differences between DOS & WINDOWS :
DOS WINDOWS
In Dos we can’t work with
multiple application &
Multiple documentation.
Windows is a multiple use,
Multiple application,
Multiple documentation.
It is a command user
interface (CUI).
It is a graphical user
interphase (GUI).
It is a single user operating
system.
It is a multi user operating
system.
Mouse operation are not
available for most dos based
software.
Window is a mouse driven.
Desktop in Windows
DESKTOP :
Desktop is the area on the screen where you
work.
ICONS :
Icons are the pictorial representation of the
executable files that can be run on windows.
TASKBAR :
The rectangular bar that runs horizontally
across the bottom of your screen is called taskbar.
Components / Contents of Desktop
 My Computer
 My Documents
 Internet Explorer
 Recycle Bin
 My Network Places
My Computer :
This icon generally shows the picture of Small
computer on the top left most corner of the
desktop. When you double click that icon, my
computer dialog box appears on the screen, showing
you the list of folders and disk drives.
My Documents :
My Document is a folder on the hard disk of the
computer where you can store various documents
prepared in different programs and applications.
When you double click the icon of the my documents
on the desktop, my documents box appears on the
screen showing you the names of folders and files in
my documents.
Internet Explorer :
This is a web browser that helps the user to
explore the world wide web.
Recycle bin :
This holds the information of all the deleted files
and folders.
My Network Places:
Network is a group of computers connected to
one another so that they can share the resources
from other connected computer.

 Log Off
 Turn Off
Turn Off :
Turn off or Restarts your computer.
Log Off :
It switches to another user which is
created in windows using control panel.
Run :
This option is used to open any file or
folder or any application program in an
shortcut method.
Help :
You can use the help contents, index
or other tabs to find out how to do a task
in windows.
Search :
To search for files and folder in
particular drive.
Settings :
Displays a list of system components
for Which you can change settings.
Documents :
Displays a list of documents that you
have opened previously.
Programs :
Displays a list of programs you can start.
Task Bar Properties
 Lock the taskbar
 Auto hide the taskbar
 Keep the taskbar on top
of the other windows
 Group the similar taskbar
buttons
 Show quick launch
The horizontal bar at the bottom of desktop is
called task bar. This bar contains start button at the left
corner and system time at the right corner.

 Appearance
 Settings
Themes :
Theme option is used to set the different
themes to windows.
Desktop :
Background option is used to change the
Wallpaper of your window (screen).
Screen Saver :
It is used to avoid burning of image whenever
the system in idle then any picture or text will
automatically appear i.e. screen saver.
Appearance :
To change the appearance of taskbar,
start menu, special properties and all
toolbars.
Settings :
To set the monitor resolution (800 X 600
Pixels).
File :
File is a collection of data.
Folder :
A folder is a location or directory
in which you can keep various files,
documents and programs.
Creating a Folder on Desktop
Right click the mouse on
the desktop. A pop-up
menu appears..
Click New > Folder Option.
A new folder icon will
appear on the desktop.
Control Panel Options
 Add new Hardware
 Add/Remove Programs
 Date/Time
 Keyboard
 Mouse
 User Accounts
 Power Management
Add New Hardware :
This option enables the user to add any new
hardware to system.
Adding / Removing Programs :
Windows makes it even uninstall or to install
program such as MS-Office, Tally, Nudi, etc
Date / Time :
This option is used to set the system date and
time.
Keyboard :
The delay rate and repeat rate of a key is set
through this particular option. The cursor blinking
speed can also be set, the language used by the
system is also be set through this option.
Mouse :
A Mouse can be set for left-handed or right-
handed person. The mouse pointer can be changed
to the available shapes the double clicking speed
can be set, a trailing mouse pointer can also be
obtained using this option.
User Accounts :
In this option we can create the Different
User-Accounts and set the password to that User-
accounts.
Power Management :
The monitor and the hard disk can be switched
Off automatically after a particular duration of
time using this option.

 Paint
 Calculator
 Notepad
 WordPad
Paint :
It is a drawing tool to draw various shapes like
An artist using various tools present in the tool
box. Paint also allows the user to create or edit
graphics in Windows Bitmap (BMP) file, GIF file.
Calculator :
It is used for calculation purposes and
Windows Can do both arithmetic and scientific
calculation. It has two types of calculators
1. Standard Calculator
2. Scientific Calculator
Notepad :
Notepad is a very useful accessory available
Under Windows which can be used as a text editor
And used for writing HTML codes. These codes can
Be viewed as Web Pages using Browser Programs
Like Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator.
WordPad :
It is a word processing package. This is a
simple text editing program that is available in
Windows, use WordPad to create or edit text files
contain formatting or graphics.
System Tools :
 Character Map
 Disk Cleanup
 Disk Defragmenter
 Backup
All the characters are
not present on the
keyboard. some special
characters can be inserted
in the documents in windows
like @, ®, √ etc. These
characters can be available
by selecting.
Character Map :
Disk Cleanup:
It searches the disk and then list temporary files,
internet files and unnecessary program files can be
safely deleted.
While creating and deleting files some of the
disk gets defragmenter.
Disk Defragmenter :
Backup: Backup the files and Folders.
Keyboard Shortcuts :
You can use the following keyboard shortcuts with
Windows.
General Windows Keys :
To Press
 See Help on the selected Dialog
box item F1
 Quit a Program Alt+F4
 View the shortcut menu for
the selected item Shift+F10
 Display the Start menu Ctrl+Esc

When an item is selected, you can use the following

 Rename an Item F2
 Find a Folder or File F3
 Delete immediately without Placing
the item in the Recycle Bin Shift+Del

 Copy a File Ctrl key while
Dragging the file.
 Create a Shortcut Ctrl+shift while
Dragging the file.

  • 9. My Computer : This icon generally shows the picture of Small computer on the top left most corner of the desktop. When you double click that icon, my computer dialog box appears on the screen, showing you the list of folders and disk drives. My Documents : My Document is a folder on the hard disk of the computer where you can store various documents prepared in different programs and applications. When you double click the icon of the my documents on the desktop, my documents box appears on the screen showing you the names of folders and files in my documents.
