1. Genre Genre means type or kind which determines what category a film/video/book is classified in. I.e: thriller, horror, action, romance etc. This is an essential part of the marketing process, enabling boundaries not only for the film makers but the audience/buyer. So when creating a media piece of your own you must pick a genre characteristic however cross genres are mostly used in today’s media products. A few examples of cross genres or also known as hybrid genres are: Action Comedy = action + comedy Black Comedy (tragicomedy) = tragedy + comedy Comedy-drama (dramedy) = comedy + drama Dark Fantasy = horror + fantasy Romantic Comedy = romance + comedy Romantic Fantasy = romance + fantasy Science Fantasy= science fiction + fantasy Science Fiction Western = science fiction + western Weird West = western + any mix of: horror /sci-fi / speculative fiction/steampunk /superheroes Our music video looked at teenage life stereotypes such as partying and drug taking, an often used context in today’s TV dramas such as Shameless which also fades into comedy terms. In a way our music video looks at somber aspects of life and filters them into comedy. Almost mocking those old fashioned perspectives and thoughts and introducing a mild reality to a surreal experience that the main character suffers through out the video. However unlike expected we didn’t follow conventions that are usually applied to music videos such as performance or lip syncing.
2. Representational analysis considers how textual element ( I.e: cinematography, editing, sound and mise en scene) are used to create a particular presentation of a social group, issue, place, system of politics or religion. Usually it presents certain realities to the viewer however this may create disapproval/disagree from the viewer. For example our Music video shows and represents teenage/young adulthood activities and experiences and trans that “they” go through or what the stereotype is, this is the preferred reading of the video. Negotiated reading is when a viewer/reader agrees with some of the messages of the text and not others. In this case the inter-textual reference may be to explicit for some; I.e: the main character urinating in the phone box. However oppositional reading is often a very clear disagreement to all context, in our music video it may mean that a viewer may find it offensive/crude or give incorrect perspectives. Representation
3. Media is a huge industry and a constant developing aspect which draws more and more products to the public.Media literacy is the process of analyzing, evaluating and creating messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres and forms. In the case of our music video project our task was to create and link a sound track to imagery in a form of a video. We did so by filming our project with mostly hand held camera; for a eye perspective narrative. Trying to incorporate camera movement into the project was difficult as it was hard to find different manners of doing so. We used minimal if not hardly any non diegetic sounds to our video to avoid the risk of cheapening the already created visual effects such as change of speed of certain clips. The choice of mise-en-scene is clear to the story’s narrative; the use of nighttime often leads the viewer to expect an unusual scenario. Media Language
4. It is commonly believed that media context has possible effects on it’s audience, such as violent films may encourage aggressive behaviour. However even if we didn’t use aggressive behaviour in our music video we implied and re-created intoxicated behaviour which leads to scenes showing consumptions and public disruption and lack of care. Therefore this created a niche segment of our possible audience, as it may not be appropriate to the younger generation as it might jeopardy their perspective and future behaviour. Which also limits where our product can be viewed, such context as ours often restricts and advices parents/guardians to prevent their children from watching certain media products so the best way to avoid under age viewing it should be rated to the correct age. Our product doesn’t intend to enforce a perspective or stereotype to the audience, it has no intentions to restrict opinions but it does show a second perspective. Depending in where it may be viewed Audience
5. Narrative Analysis Narrative is the way in which a piece of media text is structured or organised. Narrative conventions allow different times and spaces within a film to be organised in a meaningful way. When analyzing our piece of music video text we find that it produces a mono linear feel meaning that the it has multiple storylines which begin together and then split and merge. Following the points of analysis of our narrative text which was invented by Tzveyan Todorov we can understand the structure of the storyline in our piece clearly. The first way in which we analysed our music video was using the 3 point structure. The video opens with the first equilibrium, a point in the video were events seem calm, we can tell this as the character is getting ready and is firstly pictured in a blue shirt, we chose this, as the colour blue resembles a calm state and wanted to reveal the real side of the main character. The break up between the equilibrium and the dis- equilibrium is the use of narcotics. The drug taking shows the movement from the equilibrium to the next stage of the 3 point structure which is the dis-equilibrium showing the disruption of events. The incorporation of a chaotic event shows that something is going to happen, we specifically introduced this element as it an agent of disruption and effects the events of the main character negatively. The character is then in a position of chaos. We are then introduced to the new the new equilibrium which is the introduction of a new character, this being Chisanga’s character. The introduction to this character gives the audience a sense of peace, it calms the sequence down as middle man between the chaotic events of the main character. Equilibrium Dis - Equilibrium New equilibrium
6. Audience In many case’s of media text they are created with the audience’s reactions and beliefs to a film. Directors consider how the audience will react to the media text and how the interact with them. Media audiences can be defined in terms of location consumption, size and subjectivity. The domestic consumption of the media output raises questions about regulation and control. Our media text develops these ideas further. We decided to position our character in a certain position to follow development of the story, I think its leads the audience to create an idea in there mind of the story behind a character. Audiences are defined by what they consume, so we have deliberately edited out some scenes which could be intoxicating to a certain viewer of group. We have decided not to follow a certain genre as I believe that it is better for the audience not if they liked the media text to continually watch the same genre type by the same director but grasp different idea’s from other genres, hence the reason we have not followed a set structure for the development of our media text.
