GT-SSR: Reducing the cost of H2
S Removal and
Sulfur Recovery with Claus process
Exclusively licensed by GTC Technology, GT-SSRis a
“modified Claus” process that integrates the Claus unit
with tail gas treating. GT-SSR offers lower capital and
operating costs, demonstrating high reliability and up to
99.9% sulfur recovery efficiency. Single train capacities are
available from 4 to 350 ton/day.
Process Overview
As with traditional Claus designs, sour gas is mixed with air
or oxygen and sent to a combustion section that partially
converts H2
S to SO2
. The combustion is conducted at
conditions that enable the destruction of hydrocarbons
ammonia and cyanides. The H2
S and SO2
react with each
other to produce sulfur and water.

The gas, exiting the thermal section, then enters a
waste heat boiler where heat is recovered. Sulfur is then
condensed and high pressure steam is generated. The gas
stream is reheated in a proprietary reheating section before
introduction to the first Claus reactor. Following this, the
sulfur is condensed before reheating and introduction into
the second Claus reactor. Low pressure steam is generated
as the sulfur condenses. The number of Claus catalyst
stages depends on the acid gas concentration and desired
level of sulfur recovery required.
Claus tail gas is then heated by flue gas from the off-gas
incinerator and sent to a hydrogenation reactor after
mixing with hydrogen. Low pressure steam is generated as
the reactor effluent cools, and travels to a quench column.
The sour water generated is directed to the sour water
stripper while the quenched tail gas is sent to the tail gas
amine unit. Off-gas from the amine absorber goes to the
off gas incinerator, and the amine regenerator off-gas is
transported to the sour gas feed of the GT-SSR process.
Molten sulfur handling and conversion to solid sulfur are
optionally available.
A number of variations of this technology can be applied
depending on the acid gas concentration, ammonia content
and specific situations. A variety of tail gas treating options
are also available, including caustic treating.
There are many nuances to the design and operation of a
reliable “modified Claus” process: the complexity of the
combustion and catalytic reaction, the unique properties
of sulfur and the corrosion risk inherent to this system.
GT-SSR offers a design that is well proven in numerous
applications.
Operating Ranges
• H2
S concentration from 30 – 97%
• NH3
/H2
S ratio of up to 42%
• Recoveries from 98.5 to 99.99%
Process Advantages
• Guaranteed turndown to 30%.
• Hydrogen source flexibility
• Lower operating costs than liquid iron-redox or other
non-aqueous sulfur recovery processes
• High purity, saleable sulfur
• Ability to destruct ammonia, BTX, cyanide and
heavy hydrocarbon
The GT-SSR process offers the inherent benefits of the
“modified Claus” process with tail gas clean up, along
with the experience that comes from having multiple
installations.
Applications
GT-SSR is applicable to amine and sour water streams.
These are typical in refinery operations as well as in gas
processing.
