Strong Towns
Planning staff recently attended the Strong Towns Conference
presented by the Kentucky Heritage Council. Strong Towns sup-
ports a model of development that allows America’s cities, towns,
and neighborhoods to become financially strong and resilient.
The main focus of the conference was on incremental develop-
ment to build a community resistant to downturns in the economy. Incremental develop-
ment, rather than large transformative projects, builds at a smaller scale, proceeding
building by building, and block by block within areas with existing infrastructure. This
builds value in the community without relying upon large sums of money to be provided
by outsiders such as large employers or federal and state government. Incremental de-
velopment, along with quality design, allows for development at a rate the community
can sustain, while constructing buildings that provide value to the community over the
life cycle of the building.
