The document describes 10 pronunciation games and activities: 1) A pronunciation questionnaire, 2) A phoneme board race where students race to write words, 3) Another phoneme board race with teamwork, 4) A tongue twister chain game passed around a circle, 5) Connected speech dictation, 6) Phonemic bingo to identify sounds, 7) A phonetic concentration matching game, 8) A homophone snap game with picture cards, 9) A run to the wall game to recognize phonemes, and 10) The use of mirrors to help students see their mouth positions for sounds. The games aim to improve students' pronunciation through listening, speaking, and recognizing different sounds in words.
3. 2.Phoneme Board Race 1
T writes a phoneme on the board with the appropriate
picture for ease of recognition (from English File). Sts
are put into teams and race to the board to write the
word according to which phoneme they have heard in
the word that the teacher says.
4. 3.Phoneme Board Race 2
Four students choose a phoneme and write them on
the board in columns (again using the appropriate
picture for ease of recognition from English file). In prs
sts write 3 words for each phoneme without showing
them to the other teams. Each pair of sts say the word
and the other teams have to run to the board and
write the word that they heard in the correct
phoneme column.
5. 4.Tongue Twister Chain
Sts sit in a circle and T gives one of the sts a tongue
twister (written on a card). The student has to say the
tongue twister to the person on their left. That person
then says the same tongue twister to the person on
their left and continues around the circle. When the first
st has said their first tongue twister the st gives him
another and then another to keep the chain going so
that eventually all of the students are saying a tongue
twister and passing it on. Suggested Tongue Twister
cards are attached.
7. 6.Phonemic Bingo
You have to supply the sts with a bingo board which
will have words written on them (you can either focus
on vowels,diphthongs or consonants ,consonant
clusters). The teacher says a different set f words but
with phonemes that match those on the cards.Sts cross
them out until they have a line or a full house.
8. 7.Phonenic Concentration
T draws a grid on the board perhaps 5 columns by 4 and
numbers the square. On a separate piece of paper teacher
writes a word in each square ensuring thet every word has a
matching sound for example: hair/care ,bean/seen.Sts are put
into pairs or small groups and have to choose 2 numbers on
the grid.T writes the corresponding word in each of the
chosen squares-if they have, leave them on the board and
cross them through, giving a point to that team.If they are
wrong the T erases them and the next team guesses. The aim
is for sts to recognize and remember where the words with
the same sounds are to get a matching pair.
9. 8.Homophone Snap
T gives each student a set of cards with pictures on
them (Attached) and asks them to put them face down
on the desk.Sts are then put into pairs and one student
picks up one card and puts it into the middle and the
other then puts one of their cards on top of the first
one.If they are the same the first student to shout snap
and to say them correctly wins those cards.
10. 9.Run to the Wall Phoneme Recognition
Paper with phonemic script for particular phonemes
are place around the room.T says a word and students
have to run to the appropriate phoneme. Then sts take
it in turns to say a word and again the other sts have to
run to the correct one.
11. 10.Use of Mirrors
There are currently 8 mirrors in the library for use with
pronunciation. They are useful for making students
aware of what their mouths are doing for each
particular sound and then practicing the ones that yhey
have a problem with. This has proved to be very useful
with my ConPron classes.
