2. Introduction
• In this presentation, you will learn about:
• What measurement is
• How we use measurement in our life
• Different systems of measurement
• Different tools of measurement
• Converting between units of systems
• Connections between measurement and
materials
• Hope you enjoy!
3. What is Measurement?
Measurement is a way to find out a
product’s length, weight, area etc.
We all use measurement, but sometimes
we don’t even notice
We use measurement in our daily life,
like:
4. How We Use
Measurement in Our Life
By looking at our watches, we measure
time
By giving people directions, we measure
distance
By using our ruler, we measure length
By stepping on a weigh, we measure
weight
We use measurement all the time!
5. Different Systems of
Measurement
๏ There are different measurement systems all
over the world:
There is the Customary System, which was the
system they used before but we still have now,
Later on the UK invented the Metric System
๏ Some other systems include: Natural units and
Non-Standard Units
๏ Let’s focus on the Customary System and the
Metric System......
6. Customary System
✤ Some units of the Customary System include:
miles, pounds, gallons, teaspoons, tablespoons,
cups. Seem familiar?
✤ The Customary System is based on the
Imperial System
✤ We still use some of the Customary Units, but
not that often now that we have the Metric
System.
✤ I’ll explain on the next page......
7. Metric System
Some Metric Units are: Kilometer, Centimeter, Decimeter,
Millimeter, Picometer, Nanometer......
But the 6 main ones are: Kilo-, Hecto-, Deka-, Deci-,
Unit(1), Centi- and Milli-.
One way to memorise them is: King Henry Doesn’t
Usually Drink Chocolate Milk.
Fact: the units of the metric system are all multiples of
10
Kilo means 1,000, Hecto means 100, Deka means 10,
Unit means 1, Deci means 0.1, Centi means 0.01, and
Milli means 0.001
8. Tools of Measurement
There are different tools for The Clock-tells you the time/
measurement and geometry, measures time
and some of them include:
The Scale/Weigh-used to
The Compass-lets you draw measure your weight and
arcs and circles mass
The Protractor-helps you The Thermometer-tells you the
measure angles temperature
The Sextant-used by sailors to The Measuring Cup-measures
find their position on the sea capacity
The Ruler-helps you measure These are just some of the
the length of things and draw many measuring tools that
straight lines we have in our world, there are
a lot more
9. Converting Between Units
Lets start with the metric 12 inches=1 foot
system:
3 feet=1 yard
10 milli- =1 centi-
5280 feet=1 mile
10 centi- =1 deci
16 fluid ounce=1 pint
10 deci- =1 unit
2 pints=1 quart
10 units=1 deka
4 quarts=1 gallon
10 deka=1 hecto
16 ounces=1 pound
10 hecto=1 kilo
1 ton=2000 pounds
Now, for the customary
system:
10. Connections Between
Materials and Measurement
(Measuring materials)
What
materials you can
measure
Wood, Metal, Glass, and others.
Even some measurement
tools are made from
materials!
