Speech Writing
•Introduction- Polite welcome to audience. Establishes reason for making speech.
•Points are logical and structured- new point new paragraph.
•Conclusion Sums up key points.
Key devices:
•Ladies and Gentleman- address audience throughout
• Second person “YOU”
•Use of “WE” to force audience to take your side.
•Rhetorical questions.
•Exclamations!! Short emphatic sentences. “I think not!”
•Statistics to prove research and knowledge
•Expert opinions to support points made.
•Dramatic and over the top language. A speech can be a little exaggerated so use hyperbole!
•Superlatives to show it is the BEST or WORST.
•Magic 3- you want to emphasize your point so stress it 3 times!
•Actual /specific examples to prove your point
5. Speeches
Many older people don’t use computers or the internet, either
because they don’t see any value in them or because they are
afraid of modern technology.
You have been asked to give a talk to a group of older people to
persuade them to use computers and the internet. Write what you
would say.
