1. GOVERNMENT TO ALLOCATE P20 BILLION TO IMPROVE TOURISM
My Reaction
The Philippines is said to be rich in natural resources and the Filipino people are the
ones who can benefit them. They may regulate them to produce food and of course gain
money by means of tourism. I believe that this is one major distributor in the Philippine
economy and the government plays the most important role in determining what will be
good for the tourism industry regardless of those officials who are not doing their
obligations well.
Well, it is said that the government will add a total of P20 billion for infrastructure
and manufacturing for the improvement of tourism in the country. Others may say that the
performance of the country as an international tourist destination remains disappointing
and appears to be linked to the country’s history of political instability. Others may also say
that it will be good for it will impose a lot of activities in the rural areas where rich
resources and destinations are found. For me, it will be excellent if this has been already
studied that it will entail a positive result such that it will boost up the image of the country
globally. It is good that the money allocated has been distributed in different areas such as
the Tourism Promotions Board because this is the one which promotes the beauty of a
certain place in the country by any means in which media is the most popular. Allocating
this kind of amount is a very crucial decision because after all, the money is from the
people.
Given that the Philippines is a paradise, it’s up on the people on how to use the
resources properly. I hope that the investment of this amount will be, if not the solution for
all the shortcomings, at least a great help in improving the tourism industry in our country.
2. U.S. WILL NOT SEEK DEATH PENALTY FOR SNOWDEN
My Reaction
Edward Snowden is a former technical contractor for the United States
National Security Agency (NSA) and a former employee of the Central Intelligence Agency
(CIA) who leaked details of top secret US surveillance programs. He has admitted that he
had been planning to make exposures about NSA surveillance programs back in 2008 but
he believed in the views and pledges of Obama so he decided to keep it in himself instead.
He was later disappointed because Obama continued with the policies of his predecessors.
Edward may have endangered the lives of Americans by his actions. He can also be
considered as an honest and principled person because he has been risking his career just
to disclose what he considers to be wrong. This is the paradox underlying government
surveillance programs in general, and in particular questionable establishments of the U.S.
national security apparatus. He intends to seek asylum from any countries that believe in
free speech and he has filed papers seeking temporary asylum in Russia on grounds that if
were returned to the U.S. he would be tortured and would face the death penalty. How do
you build informed public consent for surveillance when the only people who know about
those programs can’t talk about them? And without the public’s consent, how can those
programs be legitimate in a democratic society?
The Obama administration may be tempted to respond to Snowden’s actions by
intensifying its policy of intimidating would-be leakers through prosecutions. Yet as this
case demonstrates, the prospect of imprisonment doesn’t deter everyone. The
administration and Congress should instead acknowledge that members of the intelligence
community need better avenues for reporting practices they find to be abusive - - if only
because, absent such avenues, there will be more Edward Snowdens.
For me, anyone who seeks to pass judgment on Snowden should be considerate
enough to understand his side. He was not able to gain support from the inside government
3. that the program was abusive. So only thing that he knew was to appear in public so that he
would be heard. This case highlights the complexity of arguing U.S. national security policy
in this present technology. It is right that the country will not seek death penalty to this
person because after all, a thorough investigation would happen first until the suspect has
proven guilty.
