Reflection on Primary Practicum
June 2017
Thinking Back
I’ve already known that it was going to be a great experience. I’mused to teaching children aged 7 to 12. I
love teaching them. The original aim of this project was to engage students in their learning process and to avoid
arguments during the lessons. The pedagogical perspective is communicational and the activities designed to work
with this group worked very well. The students were really engaged and they could experience teamwork and
assigned roles. What I had observed in the observing period was that their teacher sometimes could not manage to
explain the instructions to the students so that was my main goal and I think I reached it. The most important feature
I learnt from this experience is that when you know your students’ needs you can create a great learning e xperience
for them.
Thinking Forward
This shared time with the group gave me the chance to observe different aspects of the lesson I might have
in mind in my future practice. As each teacher has to take into account when planning, students’ interests and needs
should be the first thing to be known before starting the process of creating a lesson. If not, the lesson planning
might be pedagogically brilliant but it might not work for the group. In some observations, I had that impression
during the teacher’s performance.

Thinking Inward
This experience was really meaningful to me in many different ways. First of all, I reassured that I love
teaching big groups. The two first lessons were a bit course book centered, what I personally feel a bit boring. But
the third was really amazing. I could design a lesson with meaningful activities, to allow students experience their
learning process. Experimenting the use of language in a meaningful context is enriching and motivating not only
for the students but also for the teacher. Moreover, I could reassure that if the teacher feels bored of teaching,
students will be deadly bored till to the extreme of being unmotivated. That is the main reason for a teacher to
design a lesson to make students experience English in a meaningful way, with activities like assigning roles, giving
them the opportunity to control and assess, helping others understand, cooperating, working in teams. I really love
working out of my comfort zone where their real learning is.
Thinking Outward
I strongly believe that this experience showed me what I would like to do in my future. As you already
know I run my own business and I’ve always believed in the ongoing teacher training. Observing others teaching,
identifying the teacher and students’ needs, seeing how a course book can hinder a learning opportunity if the
teacher is not aware of how to modify or adapt the book to the group’s needs has made me realize that a good
teacher is one who is able to design their own teaching materials or readapt what they have to work with. I’d like to
start researching on how to help others be aware of it. I think it can be really rewarding for me.
