the Story. When you are finished, let’s go
to next slide

• Identify what animal Sue is.
⮚ You Scanned through the text
5
6. What is
Skimming? Speed reading or skimming
is great when you quickly
want to find a specific piece
of information in a piece of
text.
8. WHAT IS SKIMMING?
Skimming is a reading technique that can help you:
• read more quickly
• decide if the text is interesting and whether you should
read it in more detail
You can use the skimming technique when you want to
identify the main ideas in the text.
8
9. HOW DO YOU SKIM
READ?
1. When you use the skimming technique you don’t read the
whole text word for word.
2. You should use as many clues as possible to give you
some background information.
3. There might be pictures or images related to the topic, or
an eye-catching title.
4. Let your eyes skim over the surface of the text and look
out for key words while thinking about any clues you’ve
found about the subject.
9
10. USAGE OF SKIMMING
You might use skimming to:
1. see what’s in the news in a paper or on a
website
2. browse through a book to see if you want
to read it
3. look through the television guide to see
what’s on one evening
4. flick through a catalogue to see what’s on
offer
5. look through the options given on a
Google search to see what sites it
suggests
10
11. SKIMMING EXERCISE
Give yourself 60 seconds to skim through the ‘Size matters’ paragraph
below. When you are finished, cover the paragraph up before moving onto
the questions.
Size matters
Here’s something to think about the next time you go shopping. Have you
ever noticed how many trolleys are available when you go to the
supermarket? In my experience, it seems like hundreds!
But how about the number of hand baskets? Invariably I struggle to find
even one, especially when I only need a few items. Why might this be the
case?
Well it seems to be a tactic used to encourage us to buy more. If you are
walking around with an empty trolley, you are more tempted to fill it, so if
you a planning on only doing a quick shop, always try to find a basket. It will
be lighter, easier to use and is sure to save you money!
11
12. NOW TEST YOUR SKIMMING
SKILLS AND ANSWER THE
QUESTIONS
12
1. What can you find in large numbers at a
supermarket?
1. Why can this be a problem?
1. How can you avoid spending more than you
planned?
1. Why is it a good idea to use a basket
instead of a trolley?
13. NOW TEST YOUR SKIMMING
SKILLS AND ANSWER THE
QUESTIONS
13
1. What can you find in large numbers at a supermarket?
You can always find large numbers of trolleys at a
supermarket.
1. Why can this be a problem?
It can be a problem because you might only want a few
things but be tempted to buy more because of the room
in the trolley
1. How can you avoid spending more than you planned?
Always try to use a shopping basket instead of a trolley
1. Why is it a good idea to use a basket instead of a
trolley?
It is a good idea because a basket is lighter, easier to use
and may even save you money.
14. What is
Scanning? Scanning is the act of
searching a particular
information in a text with a
particular approach.
15. WHAT IS SCANNING?
When you’re reading you don’t have to read everything with
the same amount of care and attention. Sometimes you need
to be able to read a text very quickly.
For example,
to look up the word ‘valuable’ in the dictionary you
wouldn’t start at the letter A and read every word. The
most efficient way is to turn to the letter V and then find
the words beginning with va-.
This is called scanning through the dictionary.
Scanning is one type of fast reading.
15
16. HOW DO YOU SCAN BETTER?
1. Don’t try to read every word. Instead let your eyes move quickly across the page until
you find what you’re looking for.
1. Use clues on the page, such as headings and titles, to help you.
1. In a dictionary or phone book, use the header words to help you scan. You can find
these in bold type at the top of each page.
1. If you’re reading for study, start by thinking up or writing down some questions that
you want to answer. Doing this can focus your mind and help you find the facts or
information that you need more easily.
1. Many texts list things in alphabetical order from A to Z. These include everyday
materials, such as the phone book or indexes to books and catalogues.
1. There are many ways to practise scanning skills.
1. Try looking up a favourite recipe in the index of a cookbook, search for a
plumber in your local Yellow Pages or scan webpages on the internet to find
specific information.
16
17. USAGE OF SCANNING
You might use scanning to:
1. look up a word in a dictionary or index
2. find an address or a phone number in a
directory
3. check what time your programme is on
television
4. look up details or prices in a catalogue
5. pick out the website you want from
options on a Google search
17
18. SCANNING A RECIPE
When you are reading a recipe
it can be useful to scan it first:
• To check the ingredients
you need.
• To see how long it will take
to cook.
• To know when to switch
the oven on.
You should be able to find all
this information in the recipe.
18
19. SCANNING A RECIPE
EXERCISE
• Which sugar to use?
• How much plain flour is used?
• How many minutes to chill in fridge?
• What temperature to heat the oven?
19
20. SCANNING A RECIPE

find the answers to these
questions.

3. How many minutes to chill in

21. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
SKIMMING & SCANNING?
The term skimming is often confused with scanning.
1. You skim a text to obtain the gist - the overall sense - of a
piece of writing. This can help you decide whether to
read it more slowly and in more detail.
2. You scan a text to obtain specific information. For
example, to find a particular number in a telephone
directory.
3. Sometimes you can use both reading methods. After
you’ve skimmed a piece of text to decide whether it’s of
interest, you might then use scanning techniques to find
specific information.
21
22. SKIMMING AND SCANNING THE NEWS
We read in different ways. You don’t always need to read every word. Sometimes you leave bits out.
