1. The brief status and trends of
fishery productions in Vietnam

2. Main contents
1. Introduction about Vietnam, the country has good conditions for
fishery productions.
• Natural conditions
• Eco-social conditions
2. The status of fisheries in Vietnam
• Scale, Yield, quality, quantity of fisheries
• The barriers of fisheries in Vietnam
3. The trends in future
4. Conclusion
3. 1.1 Natural condition of Vietnam for development of
fisheries
• The Sea of Vietnam is a part of
South China Sea, which has 3260
km coastal line and more than
3000 islands, exclusive economic
zone of about 1 million km². It is
warm sea with highly
biodiversity.[1,3,6]
• Vietnam has a dense river
network, including 2,360 rivers
with a length over 10km. Eight
largest rivers have basins with
catchments of more than
10,000km².[1,3,6]

4. 1.2 Eco-Social Condition of Vietnam for fishery
developments
• High number of worker in fisheries,
about 550,000 people. Approximately,
400 000 full-time fishers operate in
the inshore fishery, with the rest in the
offshore fishery.[2]
• The Fisheries Law and other policy
were issued, to encourage the
development of stable fisheries.
5. 2. The status of fisheries in Vietnam
• Recently, the production
of aquaculture and
fishing are equally, total
approximately about
6500 tones per year.

6. 2. The status of fisheries in Vietnam
• With major productions are
Shrimp and Tuna, fisheries play
an important role in national
economy, about 6% of GDP and
rank 5th for export value ( 6,57
billion dollars) in 2015. [2,5]
• Some main importing markets
are: The US ( 20%), EU ( 18%),
Japan (16%)[2,5]

7. • Vietnam’s marine fisheries are
considered to be small scale and
are concentrated in coastal near-
shore waters, made heavy pressure
on near-shore fisheries
resources.[1,4,5]
• Ships and materials for offshore
fisheries are lacking.[1,4]
• The technologies for store and
produce seafood are not good, lead
to lower price of production[1]

8. 2. The status of fisheries in Vietnam
• Fisheries, specially aquaculture
to be effected by tropical
typhoon or climate factors.[1]
• The production standards are
not tightly managed.
• The knowledge of fishers about
stable fisheries is not good.

9. • Specially, the conflict in this
Sea maybe lead to the war. It
is dangerous for fishers and
marine fisheries. Recently,
China with powerful army
are invading Exclusive
Economic Zone (EEZ) of
other countries, despite
United Nations Convention
on Law of the Sea -
UNCLOS.[3,6]

10. 3. The Trends of Fisheries in Vietnam
• Diversification in aquaculture
with focus on raising shrimp,
pangasius and sea aquaculture.
It is valuable production of
fisheries during last time and in
the future.[1,5]
11. 3. The Trends of Fisheries in Vietnam
• Diversification of fishery
farming practices, with
due attention to eco-
farming and the use of
biological products
which are
environmentally
friendly[1,5]

12. 3. The Trends of Fisheries in Vietnam
• Improvement in post harvest
technology with the aim of
increasing the quality of capture
fisheries, closely connecting with
the protection, conservation and
development of fishery
resources;[1,4,5]
13. 3. The Trends of Fisheries in Vietnam
• Solving political problem
with other country, the
claims about EEZ and free
zone, make stable
environment for marine
fisheries
14. 4. Conclusions
• Vietnam has high potential for development of fishery productions
• The contribution of seafood and other products of fisheries to
economy is very important. However, Vietnam’s fisheries can be
classified into small scales.
• The co-operation with other countries is needed to upgrade the
fishery production and make the stable environment for marine
fisheries.

Editor's Notes
Notice: South China Sea is not meaning that its Sea of China. The same situation as Indian Ocean is not meaning that Ocean of India. In facts, this area named South China Sea cause by many centuries ago, China is the biggest country in this region and only Chinese had commercial transfer with western business. Therefore, the first business man in western have named this sea is South China Sea.
