2. Introduction
I am a London-based French industrial designer looking for a design job in Paris starting this October.
I recently completed a masters’ degree in Industrial Design Engineering—a joint course between the RCA and
Imperial College London—that helped me combine creativity with the technical skills I acquired in a French
ENSAM engineering degree. I also have one year’s work experience as a design researcher on an independent
project at the Helen Hamlyn Centre.
My studies and work have led me to specialise in “creative design thinking”: a way to generate innovative ideas
based on a broad analysis of human needs and social factors in a given context, while drawing inspiration from
different domains.
In my portfolio you will find:
- a research project about access to energy in developing countries for Legrand,
- a water-powered shower radio,
- a self-watering vertical gardening system,
- a critically acclaimed steampunk concept phone for O2,
- a set of removable moustaches,
- a range of furniture made using reclaimed wine-crates,
- examples of my work as a freelance graphic designer,
- various penguin-based experiments,
- more examples of my work (a sustainable shopping trolley for TKMaxx,
a random-excuse-generator talking monkey etc.).
Please contact me or visit www.arthurschmitt.com for more examples of my work.
Passionate about building the world of tomorrow, I am highly conscious of the social responsibility of design. I
don’t want to be a “landfill designer.” Humanity will face major challenges in the coming years and only good
design can help us overcome them!
So let’s get on with it!

“Energy deeply influences poor people’s lives. It is
central to practically all aspects of human welfare
(...). Yet, millions of households in the developing
world still lack access to safe and reliable energy
and pay high prices for poor-quality substitutes.”
– UNDP
The project looks at the needs and expectations
of people with little or no access to electricity
and technology. The aim is to create scenarios,
solutions or products to empower them.
Interview of MP
The field research was carried out in two parts:
Ranjan in Delhi
a visit to an ‘Off grid’ hippie commune in Wales
and a three week, in-depth visit to India talking to
energy experts, policy makers and doing grass-
root research in cities, slums and villages.
The project will finish in September and is now on
‘Electrified‘ sewing the concept development phase. The outcome
machine will be exhibited at the RCA in October.

Working prototype Casing render
SHAWAPAWA is a water-powered shower radio.
It is ‘self-powered’ : it works without chemical
batteries and induces a poetic exchange between
power source and use.
To encourage water saving, with the flick of a
button, the user can stop the flow while lathering.
An LED gently flashes when the shower has
consumed 50 litres.

Prototyping
Electronics
I wanted to design a product that would be
powered directly through its use, thus removing
the need for chemical batteries or electrical
mains. The absolute aim of the project being to
create a poetic relationship between the way the
product is used and the way it is powered.

The main challenge was the turbine design. They
had to be calculated, modeled, rapid-prototyped
and tested.

Structure
Verticulture allows city dwellers to make a better
use of their limited space by growing their garden
vertically. But Verticulture is more than just a
vertical garden. It’s a haven for a variety of living
things, encouraging the richness of biodiversity
in our own back yards.
Photo shoot The product is a system of identical frames
that can be stacked in different combinations to
create a free-standing structure in which different
modules can be inserted. They can house plants,
birds, butterflies and other forms of nature. It’s
designed to be easy to install and maintain. The
integrated irrigation system ensures that the
plants are kept perfectly watered.
Verticulture was featured on the design bolgs
Core77 and dezeen.

Second Life
This Steampunk-inspired concept phone was
developped for O2. It has no keyboard and no
screen and works with punch-cards in which the
user makes holes to program the desired action
(phone, alarm...). The phone number has to be
coded in binary.
The phone was designed for a specific user group
that we studied : Role Play Gamers, a group of
people who want to be closer in touch with the
hardware.
Winner of ‘Most Mutated Design’.

‘Triple C‘
re.crate is a brand of furniture made using

my designs and here are a few examples of the
penguin-based projects I did.
They appear in various forms: pets, with humans
