2. 1. Music video demonstrates genre characteristics.
• Andrew Goodwin says that music videos demonstrate genre
characteristics and in this video they have used elements of
dance which is typical of the drum and bass genre.
• As you can see in this screenshot it has the typical
conventions as it is dark with bright lighting and shows a busy
environment with lots of people dancing.
3. 2.There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals.
• Goodwin also talks about relationships between lyrics and
visuals and in this video the lyrics are talking about “sweet
sensations” from the music that the characters are listening to
which amplifies the lyrics.
• In this screenshot it is showing the DJs at an event who will be
creating music for people attending which shows that the
lyrics are amplified by the people dancing to the music.
4. 3.There is a relationship between the music and the visuals.
• Goodwin says that there is also a relationship between music
and visuals which is evident in this video as typical drum and
bass videos contain dancing to intense music.
• In this screenshot it shows people dancing just after a beat
drop which show that what were seeing correlates with the
changes in the music.
5. 4.The demands of the record label will include the
need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist
may develop the motifs which recur across their work.
• This is not typically a feature of the drum and bass genre as
artists don’t often feature however in this video there is
elements of artists related to chase and status.
• In this screenshot it shows an image of Liam Bailey who is the
featuring artist of the song so although he is not the artist the
record label are including the featuring artist.
6. 5.There are frequent references to the notion of looking.
• This video contains some clips of girls wearing sexual clothing
which suggest the notion of looking and Laura Mulvey and the
‘male gaze’. There is also an element of screens within screens
as they’re watching a report about their venue/event on the
news.
• This screenshot shows a woman wearing a very small top
which suggests that she is there for men to look at in a
sexualised way.
7. 6.In this music video there are no intertextual references.
7.whether the video is primarily performance based,
narrative based or concept based.
• This video is primarily performance based as it contains
mostly dancing and singing but it also contains a narrative.
• This screenshot shows a narrative being used as it is a group
of boys and the video shows their journey from getting ready
for their night.
8. Narrative Theory
• Todorov – In this video it shows an equilibrium which is the
boys getting ready and having fun which is then disrupted by
the news story of the police however it is followed by the new
equilibrium which is everyone having fun at the warehouse
party.
• Propp – this video uses Propp’s theory as you could say that
the Djs and the dinger in the videos are the hero's as they’re
producing music for people to enjoy.
• Strauss – this video shows binary opposites between the
police and youth/people attending warehouse parties as
there is a police report on the news about them attempting to
end warehouse parties yet the parties are continuing.
