 The Agios Minas Cathedral is an
Orthodox
Greek Cathedral in Heraklion, Greece,
serving as the seat of the Archbishop of
Crete.
 It was built over the time period of
1862-1895. The construction was
interrupted during the Cretan Revolution
of 1866–1869. It is one of the largest
cathedrals in Greece, with a capacity of
8,000 people.
 The church of Agios Titos is one of the
most important monuments in the center
of the city, on the street August 25. The
church seems that suffered great
disasters of earthquake and restored in
the 1446 by the Latin Archbishop
Fantino Dandolo.
 In the earthquake of 1508 suffered major
damage, but it did not lose its original
dignity.
 In 1544 a great fire caused serious
damage.
 In 1557 it was rebuilt by the foundation
is the ancient royal wonderful. He had
almost square-shaped basilica with a
dome in the middle.
 The belfry was in the southwest corner
of the temple, where he later built the
minaret for Turks.
 The Arkadi Monastery is 23 kilometers from
the city of Rethymnon and the first complete
fortress was created the last period of
Venetian rule.
 The Turkish yoke in Crete count already two
hundred and fifty years when-after ongoing
uprisings-Cretan rebels began to gather in
Arkadi from March 3, 1866 to arrive in May
to number 1,500 combatants in Crete

 The earliest mention of the name is in a
document of 1333, at which time a fief
of the Latin Patriarchate of
Constantinople and was rented by the
attorney of the L. Morosini Mario
Cornario.
 During the Venetian occupation the
picture was stolen from a wine merchant
and moved to Rome.
 In 1735 it was replaced by another
image, different iconographic type,
which is now regarded as miraculous.
 And that was stolen in 1982 by looters,
who were then arrested.
 Agios Panteleimon monastery is falling
in Fodele Malevizi.
 Located at an altitude of 170 m.
 In a landscape rich in vegetation. Access
can be via junction with dirt road 3.5
km. Right out of the 21.5 km. Of main
road Heraklion.
 At the entrance of the monastery is an
inscription dated 1677.
 In the church are interesting pictures, like
the High Priest (1837), the Root of Jesse
(1782), Saint Dimitrios (1762), and St.
George, crafted by Georgie Kastrofilakas.
 According to some authors
(Kalogeropoulos Cyrus) who worked
with El Greco claimed that the great
Cretan painter learned here hagiography,
because when lived the painter in Crete,
the monastery was not built yet.
 The Holy Monastery of Panagia
Pantanassa ("Queen of Everything") is
situated at an altitude of 30 m. and is
situated 14 km.
 West of Heraklion. This nunnery
dedicated to the Birth of Virgin Mary
and celebrates on September 8th.
 The monastery was founded in 1963 by
Bishop Nicholas Xenos designed to act
as a charity.

Crete's Historic Cathedrals, Monasteries and Churches

  • 3.  The Agios Minas Cathedral is an Orthodox Greek Cathedral in Heraklion, Greece, serving as the seat of the Archbishop of Crete.  It was built over the time period of 1862-1895. The construction was interrupted during the Cretan Revolution of 1866–1869. It is one of the largest cathedrals in Greece, with a capacity of 8,000 people.

  • 5.  The church of Agios Titos is one of the most important monuments in the center of the city, on the street August 25.   • 18.  The Holy Monastery of Panagia Pantanassa ("Queen of Everything") is situated at an altitude of 30 m. and is situated 14 km.  West of Heraklion. This nunnery dedicated to the Birth of Virgin Mary and celebrates on September 8th.  The monastery was founded in 1963 by Bishop Nicholas Xenos designed to act as a charity.
